Today, we are looking for ways to protect our planet and build a sustainable future. But the solution lies deeper than at the bottom of a recycling bin.

We are facing the question of stewardship. To become better stewards of our environment, we need to cultivate our relationship with the natural world.

Without first-hand experiences with creation we become detached from the value of the natural world. A fisherman knows the footprint he leaves when he catches a fish. If you’ve planted a seed and nurtured it to fruition, helped a sow give birth to her calf, or caught and cleaned a trout for dinner, you have experienced the delicate relationship we have with the natural world.

Dr. Hyun Jin Moon admires the majesty of creation during a trek through the mountains.

The first step to becoming better stewards of this earth is to go out and get to know the life on this earth. Those experiences will help us gain a deeper understanding of who we are and the role we play in learning how to live in harmony with our earth.

American environmental lawyer, Gus Speth, once said, “I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy… to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation.”

When we understand the beauty of the world we live in, we expand our gratitude for it, providing the fuel and passion that is combined with the knowledge to come up with creative solutions and innovations.

We become better stewards of this earth when we become aware of our mark on the ecosystem. The natural world gives us and teaches us so much. If we knew how intimately we are related to the local plants, animals and waterways, we would better preserve and serve those ecosystems.

What are ways you can become a better steward for the environment this International Mother Earth Day?

Anthony A. Schller delivered the following message at the Global Peace Convention 2012 in Atlanta. Rev. Schuller served as co-chair of the convention. He is also a member of the Global Peace Leadership Council and co-chair of the Coalition for American Renewal. His simple message? When asked to help to world peace, the only acceptable answer is, “Yes.”

In 2007, I was asked to meet with this gentleman. His name was Preston Moon. And I said, “Let me see if I can work it into my schedule.” I managed to invite him to my office.

He came with about 15 other people. He shook my hand. And I was very impressed by this young man. He started telling me about, “One Family Under God”. I thought, I appreciate this, I enjoy this. And he introduced me to all the other people around that he came with. They were very involved in creating peace internationally around the world.

And I thought to myself, “That’s nice. That’s good for you, but what does it have to do with me?” Then he said, “I want you to come to Brazil and participate at our event there, and speak at our event”. I thought for a moment, “I don’t have time to do that. We don’t have any offices in Brazil. I’m busy with this ministry. I’m doing all these things, how could I possibly do that?”

But you know it’s hard to say “no” to something that you’re supposed to say “yes” to. It’s hard to say “no” to somebody who says, “Will you help me create world peace?” It’s hard to say no when you know you’re supposed to say, “Yes.”

I can’t see too much, so I’m just going to have to believe that there are people out there. All I can see are the bright lights. So, I’m going to ask a question, and I’m not going to know the answer, but, “How many people are here for the first time?” This is for everyone, not just for me. So, if this is your first Global Peace Convention, I want everyone to see how many new peo

ple we have here, I want everyone to see. So you’re going to have to tell me. But I’m assuming there are a lot. Am I right? I’m assuming that it’s about half. Am I right?

Thank you for that feedback. I appreciate it.

I came to my first one, just like you did. That was in December of 2008, because I couldn’t say, “no” to world peace. I had to say “yes”. I think shortly after that, I had an amazing time, I met Bishop Ferreira there. He had a convention room filled with about 20,000 screaming, wild, insane young people. And I was supposed to speak. I was at the podium. There were about 200 people at the podium. Nobody knew who was supposed to be speaking, and I spoke anyway.

And nobody stopped screaming and yelling the entire time, so nobody heard a single thing I said. And then Preston got up, and he walked around the stadium, so people knew who was speaking at least. Because he was the one walking around the stadium and he continued to proclaim his message, “One Family Under God, One Family Under God, One Family Under God.” A fabulous message.

Well, after that, I was asked to become a member of the Global Peace Leadership Council. And what do you say when somebody asks you to participate in helping to create world peace? “Yes!” That’s all you can say, you have no choice, you have to say “yes”. So I said, “Yes.”

So by 2010 I was a member of the Global Leadership Council, and I continued to participate in events. I think it was two years ago that I met Emmanuel. Was it in Mongolia we met for the first time? Yes, it was Mongolia. And since then, he was asked if he would be the co-chair in Atlanta. And what do you say to world peace? “Yes!” I was asked if I could be the co-chair, and what did I say? “Yes.”

Then I was asked if I could be the chairman for the Coalition for American Renewal. And what do you say? “Yes.” Period. End of story.

I brought my son here about a year ago, his name is Anthony, and he was asked to participate with the next gen of Coalition for American Renewal. So we have the Coalition for American Renewal, but N-Gen. So, it’s actually called CAR N-Gen. Got it?

A family of peace. Rev. Anthony A. Schuller, Co-Chair of of Global Peace Convention 2012, Mrs. Donna Schuller, Global Peace Women Advisory Council, Anthony Schuller, Coalition for American Renewal N-Gen

He was asked to be the co-chair. What did he say? “Yes.” What do you say when someone asked you to help for world peace? You say “yes.” Where is my son? He’s out there somewhere. I can’t see a thing. I believe he’s in that area, Anthony if you can stand so they can see you. So, I’m assuming by the applause that he stood and you all saw.

So, on behalf of the Moon family, on behalf of the staff of the Global Peace Conference here in Atlanta, on behalf of the King family, on behalf of the Coalition for American Renewal, on behalf of the Global Peace Leadership Council, it is my honor, along with Emmanuel Jones to welcome you to your very first, if this is your first, Global Peace Convention.

And we are very, very glad you’re here. I am praying that every single one of you will have an experience like myself, and like my son. Where you will be asked to participate in something and there is only one answer when you are asked to participate in world peace, “Yes.”

So this is a group, and organization which started very small. It started in 2008 when Preston came and talked to me, and there was a hand full of people there, and we started this thing, and it has been going on for many years. And it’s a combination of a lot of people doing a little.

As you have a lot of people doing a little, that little becomes much. To the point that it becomes a tsunami, and that’s our goal: to create a tsunami of peace that is going to sweep around the world and just take everyone in with the love of God. Because we are all brothers and sisters together. We are one family under God.

And all it requires us to say is one small, three letter word – “Yes.” So you will be asked to participate in peace in one way, shape or form. And we don’t know how it’s going to happen we don’t know what the role is going to be. This is a very organic organization, meaning that it’s fluid, and creating and growing in ways that we don’t understand or comprehend. And yet it’s an organized organism, it’s not a cancer by any stretch of the imagination. It’s a very healthy institution. And so you’ll be asked to do something. We don’t know what it’s going to be, you don’t know what it’s going to be. It’ll be something.

And when you’re asked, you’re going to say “yes”. And you’re going to do your little share, and you’re going to bring some of your family and friends. And they’re going to say, “Yes,” and it’s just going to permeate around the world until people start recognizing it. And they’re going to start coming to us, and saying, “I want to be a part of this.” Very much as Bernice did. She wants to be a part of this.

So, I just want to thank you for being here. I want to thank you for saying “yes” to being here. I want to thank you for the opportunity to be able to have an amazing co-chairman, thank you Emmanuel. I just love you Emmanuel. I love all the people who are her. I would love to shake your hand.

And again, I just want to thank you and welcome you to this wonderful place. And you know the answer when you’re asked the question, the answer is, “Yes.”

(credit: (AP Photo/Yonhap) )

Rev. Moon was a pioneer for North-South Korea relations in many ways. Despite the stark differences between Kim Il Sung’s communist stance and Rev. Moon’s anti-communist and spiritually based perspective, the two men were close. Close enough that at Rev. Moon’s death, North Korean premier Kim Jong Un issued “messages of condolences”.

Rev. Moon’s frequent and friendly relations with North Korea were “an early and important part of a larger international effort to pry open the hermit kingdom.” Rev. Moon’s breakthroughs were not without risk. At the time, contact with the North was punishable by South Korean law.

Rev. Moon was also among the first to invest in joint economic ventures, mainly Pyonghwa Motors, an automobile company that was a “joint business partnership between a Church-owned South Korean company and a state-run North Korean consortium.”

Mr. Rosen quotes Scott Snyder, a Korea expert with the Council on Foreign Relations, that Pyonghwa Motors was “one of the first efforts to do production of that type in North Korea.” The “path-breaking effort” provided “early socialization” for the North who had limited exposure to modern manufacturing and the global economy. It was an indicator of “later and more significant efforts at cooperation on the Korean Peninsula” Today, over 100 South Korean companies employ North Koreans at the Keasong Industrial Park a few miles north of the DMZ.

Mr. Rosen also notes that Rev. Moon was not a push-over. While he made economic investments and conciliatory gestures, he also issued harsh criticisms of the limitations and dire realities of the communist state.

However, the article ends observing that Rev. Moon “may have helped to foster engagement between Pyongyang and the outside,” but he “never lived to see his efforts pay off as he’d dreamed.”

In an interview Dr. Hyun Jin Moon, Rev. Moon’s third son, has made it clear that he is still pursuing his father’s dream and learning from the past. Dr. Moon stated, “My father was the one who opened the door to North Korea. I was in a very unique position to be very close and observe what happened when North Korea opened its doors, and I was able to see the mistakes that were made.”

Among these errors, according to Dr. Moon were the uncoordinated efforts of the South to reach out to the North, particularly during the Sunshine Policy. It allowed North Korea to play one group against the other.

Thus, the Global Peace Foundation, which Dr. Moon founded, has been a part of launching Korea United, a coordinated effort among over 350 civic and religious organizations towards unification.

Dr. Moon is well aware that he stands on different grounds than his father. For him, he is one generation removed, and Kim Jong Un is two generations apart. Yet Dr. Moon is hopeful to see his father’s dream fulfilled in the near future.

Among her other accolades, Ms. Mumpuni received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in August 2011 and in 2010, she attended the United States Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship, where she expressed, “I got in my life so many privileges from God, this is the way to pay back.”

“My mother told me, that life is about sharing” Her mother taught her that life is about sharing, and she has in turn is teaching her countrymen the same. This principle is the simple brilliance behind the comprehensive model of power generation and village development that she has created. The government, local businesses and village residents are sharing the resources of nature together for the betterment of the nation.

The following is an article that first appeared in the 878th edition of the Weekly Donga as part of a seires entitled, “Ko Young’s Job Revolution” (Professionals who are changing the world), and later reported on GPF-Korea’s blog. It is Ms. Mumpti’s story bringing electrical power, self-reliance and most of all the desire to share with and care for one another from one village to the next in Indonesia.

Tri Mumpuni, Recipient of the 2012 Global Peace Award

“She brought a ray of hope to developing areas through Micro-hydro Power ”

Tri Mumpuni introduced micro-hydro generators as a means to provide electricity to remote villages in Indonesia.

National characteristics are often influenced by its natural environment and resources. People who grow up in areas where they have to make infertile land fruitful tend to have strong and persistent characteristics. On the other hand, people who live on land rich in oil and mineral resources are likely to live without major worries, and tend to be easy going.

Indonesia has many barren areas but is also blessed with a variety of mineral resources. It is a MIKA country, an acronym for Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea, and Australia, which are regarded as the rising nations post-BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South African Republic).

Nevertheless, Indonesia consists of 17,500 islands. It would take an astronomical amount to build up its industrial infrastructure. Presently, 90 million people, about 35 percent of the entire 240 million people, live in homes without electrical power. By 5 pm the production line at factories and plants come to a standstill as the power is cut in order to reserve energy for future use.

Under these circumstances, one woman has suggested an alternative to loan-based development plans for building electric power infrastructure. She is not a politician with great accomplishments or a CEO of an enterprise. She is a 47-year-old graduate student named Tri Mumpuni, who is building a new Indonesia by working together with local residents to develop the nation’s natural resources.

In the early 1990s, while traveling through Switzerland as a graduate student to attend a conference, Ms. Mumpuni witnessed something she had never seen before. She spotted small hydro power generators in the deep valleys of Switzerland. Curious about the machine’s function, Ms. Mumpuni made inquiries.

She discovered that each household could produce cheap electricity using the small scale hydro power generators that harnessed the power of water that rapidly flowed through the deep valleys of Switzerland.

The Engineer who Established an Infrastructure for Electrical Power

A villager checks the pipes of a micro-hydro generator.

When Ms. Mumpuni heard this, she was thrilled. She immediately thought of the deep gorges that ran through the islands of her home and considered the possibility of using the micro-hydro power system in Indonesia. She gathered information about micro-hydro power technology from the local Swiss residents and technicians and found that maintenance costs were less than she expected. She decided, “Let’s try this in Indonesia. It might work for the villages on the islands that do not have access to electricity.”

Ms. Mumpuni purchased books on micro-hydro power systems and returned to Indonesia to draft a design of a micro-hydro power system that matched the local topography. However, the further her work progressed, the more she realized that the cost for electric motors and piping would be too high.

“I realized that this is not something I can do by myself. I decided to submit a proposal to the municipality of Cinta Mekar and local businesses.”

She knew businesses and the government were interested in a profit making ventures and rarely took interest in individuals. So, Ms. Mumpuni created an entity called IBEKA. Through this organization she submitted her proposal. The following describes the proposal’s vision.

“The Micro-hydro power plant is a perfect way to supply electricity to people in remote villages likes Cinta Mekar. This is a venture that will continuously generate profits for the community. However, it is first and foremost a civil cooperation project. The micro-hydro power plant facilities will be built in the village through the joint investment of the government, local businesses, and IBEKA. As local businesses and the village community jointly own shares, the local people will have first access to power. The surplus will be sold to the government. The profits will be equally divided between the local businesses and the community 50:50.”

This model was dubbed a ‘Hybrid Model’ by Ms. Mumpuni. The government showed positive response, noting that the company would set a precedent for local community development. But Ms. Mumpuni confronted an unforeseen hurdle. The local residents did not accept her vision. They doubted its possibility, and wondered if they would have to be responsible for maintenance and repairs, or if the government would do everything.

When Ms. Mumpuni realized that no resident was willing to take on the project, she moved to Cinta Mekar herself to ensure the business’ success. For two years she spent time with the villagers building close and intense communication. She focused on changing the mindset of people. To prevent the project’s failure, she worked hard to increase the village’s maintenance and repair capacity. In this way, the co-op was created with the local villagers. Even after the facilities were completed, business has continued. A couple micro-hydro power plants were built in Cinta Mekar, and in 2004, the village achieved 100 percent energy independence.

Multiplying Small Scale Environmentally Friendly Energy Development

Based on the success of Cinta Mekar, Mumpuni created an ironclad principle for the hybrid model business. “Natural resources must be developed and utilized in cooperation with the local residents.” Ms. Mumpuni poured her life into this project. She traveled to 68 regions in Indonesia disseminating the hybrid model.

IBEKA’s Philosophy of community-driven development of Indonesia’s natural resources.

The local businesses and the village community jointly own the shares of the plant, and are supported by the government, local businesses, and IBEKA. This is her explanation of the hybrid model.

“The Micro-hydro power plant Is not just a small scale plant. The size is not the primary feature, it possess deeper significance. This project is not just about supplying power to remote villages but about initiating a change that uplifts the quality of life in the villages. Children can safely walk the streets at night; we can increase earnings as we harvest different crops and even create more jobs. The funds earned from the sale of electricity to the government can be allocated to fund provide college education for village children and life insurance for villagers who cannot afford medical expenses for surgery. The money could also be utilized for loans to people who want to start small businesses. The most important thing is that throughout the entire process, the local people are a part of the project. If our resources are developed with the consent and participation of the community that consists of individual families, we can enhance democratic participation. This is how we can begin to dream of change.”

Ms. Mumpuni travels around the globe propagating the development of this small scale environmentally friendly energy system. Even at this moment she is engaged in a dialogue with the local people somewhere spreading the message that they have the power to change their community.

“The belief that each of us has the power to change things ourselves is the real ray of hope that is illuminating the remote areas of Indonesia. I just helped foster that belief through building a sense of community.”

by: Tony Devine

Good morning everyone. It is a pleasure to be with all of you today.

Tony Devine, Executive Director of LeadIn, a Global Peace Festival Foundation (GPFF) initiative, presents at the Global Peace Convention 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Stephen Covey who wrote The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People always said, “Keep the end in mind,” So in the world of education, what are employers of the 21st century looking for? Two recent reports, have come out called Job Outlook 2012, by the Association of Colleges and Employers, and Are They Really Ready to Work by the Conference Board and the Partnership for the 21st Century Skills.

What are these employers, whether it be small businesses, medium, or large looking for in their employees? They are looking for young people; looking for employees who are ethical. They are looking for ethical workers, people who can be trusted with their clients and so on. They are looking for people with good communications ability. They want people who can actually learn on the job, and continue learning – learning does not stop when you graduate from college or high school. They want people who are motivated, who can actually take initiative. They are looking for people who can work with others, have the ability to solve problems, have good interpersonal skills, have a positive attitude, and are dependable. Now you don’t see here in this list, “We want people who have an A in geography, an A in math, a B+ in science.” These are the qualities that are desirable.

In Kenya, there are six million young people who are out of work. We have university students shining shoes on the side of the street. In response to both of these points, the Global Peace Foundation together with the Ministry of Education, Oxford University Press, and other really terrific partners, have come together, and have decided to tackle this issue of education by putting an emphasis on non-cognitive skills, building character and creativity. Something that schools do a very poor job of globally.

This initiative empowers students to be successful, not just in school, but in the world of work, even in their own lives, in their community. It focuses on building character strengths that are even more important than IQ. And also to have the freedom to develop creativity and leadership. , This is done by creating a high performing and caring culture in the schools. It’s supported by a national council that is made of the Ministry of Education, Brand Kenya and many other terrific partners.

What are some of the outcomes of this? You have teachers coming into schools now with a smile on their face, teachers who are going beyond the boundaries and restrictions of their role of teaching, to care, and to raise the whole child.

In Our Lady of Fatima High School in Nairobi, one teacher started an initiative called “Talk to Me”, where students can come up to her at the end of her class in the evening and talk not just about academic issues they are struggling with, but even personal, familial issues. It’s bridging this gap between teachers and students in a caring way.

At Moi Forces Academy High School in Nairobi, it’s a military school, all of the 960 students are doing the One Percent of Change and

Dr. Moon addresses members of 1% for Change and Peace at the Moi Forces Academy during the Global Peace Festival in Nairobi, Kenya in 2010.

Peace. They are actually dedicating one percent of their time, talent, and resources to improve their school and the community surrounding their school. Now in Kenya the academic year has ended. These students are going back to their communities across the country and they are doing the One Percent of Change and Peace in their local home communities.

Right across the nation of Kenya, social enterprise has begun at Langata High School. A group of students got together and they created a small company. They produce eco-friendly charcoal out of waste paper, and they sell that to the vendors and people surrounding the school. In the process, they are learning these 21st century skills of character, leadership, creativity.

This is Supporting Peers in Need. In our partnership with the United Nations Environmental Program, this student from Our Lady at Fatima High School got invited to go to an environmental conference in Indonesia last year. When she came back, she was so inspired by all of this. She didn’t have a birth certificate in order to get her passport. She never left her community and all of a sudden she’s representing Kenya at an international conference. When she came back to her school, she started a program to raise funds to help pay for the fees of needy students who come from the slums surrounding this school. She put together a committee of students, high school students. Not only did she help pay for the fees, but also for food for students who are coming from needy families, and even pay for a pair of shoes. They decide and determine who gets what.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2573" class=" wp-image-2573" title="Stephen Njoroge has been dubbed Mattai's successor at the age of 12 for planting 10,000 trees through the We Care Club at his school" src="https://www.hyunjinmoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/stephen-njoroge-Photo-bySARA-MOJTEJEDZADEH-Nation-Media-Group.jpg" alt="Stephen Njoroge has been lauded Mattai's successor at the age of 12 for planting 10,000 trees through his We Care Club at his school.
You have a case of this twelve year old student, Stephen Njoroge, who felt that something more needs to be done to improve the environment. He started an initiative by planting a few trees. This led to the planting of 10,000 trees through a group of fellow students, his own age that they call the We Care Club. It was recently recognized by the United Nations.

In Buru Buru Girls High School, the girls in that school are planting trees, and they are associating virtues with the trees. So for example, one student might call her tree, the new sapling, the virtue of generosity. When she goes out to check on the tree every few days, she is also assessing,“Am I growing in my sense of generosity to others?” in a comparable way to how the tree is growing.

Over the last year and a half, 900 teachers and school principals have been trained in the Character and Creativity Initiative. We focused in on seven capacity building schools. This year this has expanded to almost 2/3 of the high schools, the public high schools in Nairobi County. And in August of this year, it is expanding to all 48 national schools across the country.

The program is being evaluated by the Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis. We have some preliminary results, the formal report will be coming in about a month. But according to data from the Ministry of Education, the schools that are doing the Character and Creativity Initiative have demonstrated improved academic and student achievement compared to their cohorts. Also, they have reduced disciplinary problems. In one school, the disciplinary problems have been reduced to zero. So the vice principal has nothing to do anymore, he’s out of a job. And of course, it improved the learning environment.

Partners are coming out of their organizational silos to increase a much larger impact on student achievement. I want to thank you very much on your attention.

Thank you.

On December 1, at the close of the Global Peace Convention 2012, Dr. Manu Chandaria and his wife Mrs. Aruna Chandaria received the Exemplary and Innovative Philanthropy Global Peace Award for their substantial investment into social programs in Kenya and the greater East African Region.

Dr. and Mrs. Chandaria, have three children. Their granddaughter was present to witness the global forum recognize her grandparents’ outstanding achievement.

Dr. Chandaria is CEO of Comcraft Group, a multi-billion dollar enterprise that spans over 40 nations. In 2012, he was named one of Africa’s top twenty most influential businessmen by Forbes magazine, and has been referred to as Africa’s Bill Gates. He is Founding Chairman of the East African Business Council and Kenya Business Council, and regional chairman of the Global Peace Foundation in Africa.

“To be a successful human being, it is not enough to be a professional success; you have to share and care. To share and care for your family is natural, but you have to share and care beyond your family.”

His philanthropy has been recognized by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who conferred Dr. Chandaria with an OBE (Order of the British Empire)in 2003, and by His Excellency Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya who bestowed the Elder of the Burning Spear to Dr. Chandaria in 2007.

However, Dr. Chandaria does not take credit for his success. In his acceptance speech for the Global Peace Award, Dr. Chandaria shared his secret.<a href="<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /> <p>The Global Peace Awards Gala closed out the Global Peace Convention 2012.
Sharing and Caring for the World

Dr. and Mrs. Chandaria enjoy the garden at their home in Nairobi. Photo Credit: Joong Ahn Monthly, 2010.

In an exclusive interview with Korean magazine the Joong Ang Monthly in 2010, Dr. Chandaria describes his family’s spiritual heritage influence on his philanthropy. “Jainism has taught me moderation through abstinence and vegetarianism. It guides me to live a life though union and unity within family.” In contrast to their vast business empire, the Chandarias live modestly, and much of their personal wealth has been reinvested into developing the education, health and economic infrastructure of Africa.

Dr. and Mrs. Chandaria are also passionate peace builders. In the same interview, Dr. Chandaria continued, “We do not kill anything with our words or actions. We do not do anything that might inflict pain on others.” With the upcoming elections in Kenya, Dr. Chandaria has been an outspoken advocate for Kenyan unity. In his interview with Capital Talk of K24TV Dr. Chandaria said, “This is our Kenya…We are not getting prosperity by dividing, we can do it by getting together.” He urged Kenyans to put their country before tribe. “First is Kenya, second is Kenya, third is Kenya, fourth, fifth is Kenya, then finally sixth, you can be your tribe.”

Dr. Chandaria was key in bringing together the Global Peace Foundation, Brand Kenya, UNDP and others partners like the Kenyan Ministry of Education, to host the first ever Kenyan National Youth Summit in January 2013. According to the Standard Digital, 2,000 youth from 47 counties attended, and were encouraged to be “Peace Ambassadors” during the upcoming elections, as well as bold and innovative entrepreneurs for Kenyan development.

Today Dr. and Mrs. Chandaria’s work for peace extends beyond Kenya. To the leaders at the Global Peace Convention he said, “I call on leaders to spread the message of tolerance, peace and innovative leadership to the whole world.”

An old picture with close family friend Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa and Gandhi

In their house, Dr. and Mrs. Chandaria have a painting of Mother Teresa, a treasured family friend. The relationship began after one of their daughters volunteered at the reverend mother’s mission. Later she paid a surprise visit to the Chandaria house. The friendship continued to grow and Dr. and Mrs. Chandaria became major supporters of Mother Teresa’s work. In his interview with the Joong Ang Monthly, Dr. Chandaria recalled, “Of all the times she visited, she never had even a cup of water. When we offered, she always said she would eat later with her sisters.”

Mahatma Gandhi has also had significant influence on Dr. Chandaria. When Dr. Chandaria attended university in India, Gandhi’s non-violence movement to free India from British rule was at its height. Dr. Chandaria described to the Joong Ang Monthly how during the protest against the British monopoly on the clothing industry, he minimized his wardrobe and even tried sewing his own clothes. Dr. Chandaria continues to honor Ghandi’s teaching that people are not owners of wealth but trustees asked to manage wealth.

Lifelong Volunteers

Another recent accomplishment for Dr. Chandaria is the launch of the East African Peace Volunteer Corps in 2012. At its inauguration, Dr. Chandaria said, “Once you are a volunteer, volunteerism will live with you for life.” According to Dr. Chandaria, who urged members of the Kenyan government to increase volunteer opportunities, particularly for youth, volunteerism is the “basis of our happiness.”

“Once you are a volunteer, volunteerism will live with you for life.” He also connected volunteerism to development and peace. He explained, “When we change the mindset from one of what is in it for me, to one of service” citizens are empowered to “take action for peace and development.”

According to Dr. Chandaria, “Volunteerism has no limit”. He described simple acts of service that could lead to community transformation: two million youth planting twelve trees a year could restore a forest, a handful health volunteers trained to make house visits could meet the community’s health needs, and if peace is brought into every community discussion peace could become a core value of Kenya.

The personal example of Dr. Chandaria and Mrs. Aruna Chandaria demonstrates the power of volunteerism. Through the Chandaria Foundation alone they have funded the Chandaria Emergency Center in Nairobi, the Pandya Memorial Hospital in Mombasa, and the Chandaria School of Business at United States International University. Last year they donated $1,6 million to upgrade the intensive care unit of Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital in Nairobi. After the post-election violence tore through the Rift Valley, they rebuilt two schools in Mutate and Sasamua, under one condition, that the schools educate children of all tribes. This does not mention the numerous university scholarships, grassroots development projects and health initiatives that they have invested in.

A Family Business Model

He make the connection between good business and peace.

Dr. Chandaria is not just a philanthropist and peace builder, he is a skilled businessman. Yet, he is not unfamiliar with the challenges of poverty and the passion, vision and cooperation needed for success. In an interview with the Hindustan Times, he jokes, while he was not “born with a silver spoon in his mouth, there were at least spoons in the house”. His father emigrated from Gujarat, India in the early 1900s, one of many laborers who came from India to lay tracks for a railroad that would connect Mombasa to Nairobi. Dr. Chandaria spent his childhood in a cramped room with three families on Biashara Street in Nairobi.

Eventually Dr. Chandaria’s father quit and began his own wholesale supply shop. At the time, Indians faced heavy discrimination. They were limited to where and what businesses they could enter. But that did not deter Dr. Chandaria’s father. He eventually joined a group of Indians brought together by Dr. Chandaria’s future in-laws, the Shahs, to buy Kenya Aluminum, a saucepan manufacturer, from bankruptcy. Despite multiple setbacks, limited markets and the group’s eventual disbandment, the small company grew.

At a Kenya Association of Investment Groups meeting in 2009, Dr. Chandaria discussed how their family overcame challenges and grew. “We would work together as a family to build the business.” Today Comcraft is as much a family run business as it is professional.

Dr. Chandaria described the strength of the family business model. “Coming together gives individuals and the business capacity to fight, especially when things are going wrong.” The family model has “a leader who presents a vision to the team and everyone has to be willing to follow them.” The success of many Asian businesses in Kenya has been attributed to the family model that strengthens shared interests and provides access to inexpensive capital. This contrasts more “western” models where individuals form investment groups and partnerships to collect capital for larger projects, which are often stalled by conflicting interests.

“One of our principles, right from the beginning, is looking out for the community we live in.”

What has made Comcraft a success is not just its excellent products, but also its values and principles. In Kenya, the Chandaria name is synonymous to corporate social responsibility and philanthropy. Social responsibility according to Dr. Chandaria is “both a moral obligation and a core business value.” Founded in 1954, the Chandaria Foundation is one of Kenya’s oldest foundations. Dr. Chandaria describes how he and his brother were inspired to establish the foundation. “Back in the 1950s we heard about the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations and what they were doing in America….we thought of starting the Chandaria Foundation.” To date, millions of the family’s earnings have been poured back into hospitals, schools, scholarships and development initiatives.

Dr. Chandaria’s commitment to service extends into his business development. He describes Kenyan development as something not exclusive to the nation, but tied to the region of East Africa and the continent of Africa. His simple perspective is, “How can we help everyone?” He is keenly aware of his responsibility as a businessman. Businesses generate capital and development that creates jobs and future security for the children of Africa. As chairman of the East African Business Council and Kenya Private Sector Alliance, he encourages corporations to open avenues for transnational trade relations to increase investment and development throughout Africa, including the more rural areas of Southern Sudan and Ethiopia.

In addition, to social responsibility, a feature article by Business Daily Africa attributes Dr. Chandaria with virtues like hard work, discipline, and honesty. Even though he is in his 80s, Dr. Chandaria still works 16 hours a day.

Each Day is a Bonus

Dr. Chandaria is more than 80 years-old, but age has not slowed him down. With the same core values that he applies in his life, he travels around the world to develop his business and work for peace. To K24TV he said, “Every day that passes, every day is a bonus.”

Every night before he goes to bed, he writes in his journal to “clean his slate” so he can greet the coming day with a fresh mind. Each day for him is a blessing as he seeks to “make the impact that is necessary.”

Shin Dong-A ran the interview in its January edition.

Interview with Global Peace Foundation Chairman, Dr. Hyun Jin Moon

Below is the unofficial English translation.

“Trust must first be established on a grassroots level for the reunification of North and South Korea”

Global Peace Foundation Chair Hyun Jin Moon stressed in his opening speech at the Global Peace Convention, GPC Atlanta 2012, “We need a new framework rooted in our shared spiritual aspirations and principles that give rise to the values needed to build peace.”

During the interview, he gave an overview of GPC Atlanta 2012 and talked about GPF’s movement for Korean reunification.

Shin Dong-A: Why was Atlanta selected to host the GPC?

Dr. Moon: Atlanta is a place rich with history and faith. It was the center of the civil rights movement, led by Dr. Martin Luther King; it is also the home of former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, who has been deeply involved with the Habitat for Humanity movement. The King Center and The Carter Center are located here. They both were a part of the conference. I have always seen the civil rights movement as not just the struggle for African American civil rights, but as a great spiritual movement to awaken all humanity. We can rekindle that spirit in Atlanta and make a global awakening that will offer a new perspective for peace.

Shin Dong-A: You mentioned that the co-prosperity of North and South America, the reunification of North and South Korea, and the Middle East are all connected to a single theme.

Dr. Moon: What is the relevance to Korea? This is an international gathering. I’m actually building awareness of how important the unification issue and the unification movement that we initiated is in terms of American foreign policy.

Before that unification process happens, America also needs to help Korea. Of course Korean people should actually initiate, but it actually needs the aid of many international parties to support the process, and this is an effort to build that support.

This whole process that is happening right now, I went from Mongolia to Korea, now to the United States, and I’m planning on doing a GPF in Japan, I’m basically bringing this entire region, not just the United States, North and South America. So it’s this entire Pan-pacific rim that is recognizing this as a major issue not only in terms of security but in terms of stability of the region.

Shin Dong-A: You underlined the importance of civil diplomacy. What do you think of the current government’s policy towards North Korea?

Dr. Moon: It needs to re-engage. No matter who wins [the Korean election], most likely there will be re-engagement.

Shin Dong-A: Dialogue between North and South Korea has stalled. How can this situation be resolved?

Especially if the Korean people take ownership, if this really becomes a national movement that really moves, “North and South Unity” will be just around the corner. Dr. Moon: In order for unification to happen in Korea, there has to be trust established. Trust is essential.

I believe in the Korea United initiative that I started. I think there is tremendous power there. Especially if the Korean people take ownership, if this really becomes a national movement that really moves, “North and South Unity” will be just around the corner.

Shin Dong-A: There is criticism that aid to North Korea will end up benefiting only the government of North Korea.

Dr. Moon: It all depends on what kind of aid is provided. If we offer flour aid for example, it can be used for another purpose. But if we set up a bakery plant and have baked goods produced for consumption, we don’t have to worry about those kinds of problems.

That is one of the great things about how we framed the Korea United movement. We’re talking about outcomes, we’re not talking about, “We need to get rid of this regime”; we’re talking about outcomes for the entire Korean people. You give room so that it does not become a confrontational issue. And not only that, it’s non-threatening. That’s the power of the framework of establishing the outcome, and what are the principles and values that are going to lead you there.

Shin Dong-A: Have you been to North Korea?

Dr. Moon: I have been invited several times, but I haven’t been, yet. I would like to go when I have established a foundation upon which I can make a substantial contribution towards reunification. I do not want to go for political show, to just take pictures.

The Global Peace Foundation’s (GPF) Alllights Village was the most popular booth at GPC Atlanta 2012. Solar-powered lanterns afforded to remote villages in developing countries are saving lives that could be lost from smoke and soot inhalation, giving light for better education, and raising people out of poverty.

GPF Korea chairman, Mr. Kyung Eui Yoo, initiated the solar lantern project that has donated these environment-friendly lights to some of the 1.9 billion people who live without electricity. The lamps have improved education, reduced illiteracy, reinforced sexual ethics, cut kerosene expenses, and increased household income. The campaign kicked off in March 2011, and by close of 2012, reports to have donated 3,000 solar powered lanterns and streetlights to 50 towns and villages in the Philippines, Malaysia, Mongolia, Kenya, and Indonesia.

The solar-powered lanterns need only a few hours to be fully charged for both indoor and outdoor use. GPF Korea has raised funds to procure the lanterns from the manufacturer who specially offers them at cost value.

Leaders from emerging countries who attended the GPC witnessed the power of these lanterns and invited GPF to bring the lights to their own countries. Leaders from developed countries expressed interest in joining the campaign.

GPF Korea President Kyung Eui Yoo said, “The Alllights Project is one of the substantive peace activities that GPF is carrying out in order to build model communities from these villages in developing countries.” He added, “During GPC 2012, leaders from several countries got together to discuss how to expand this campaign.”

President Yoo recently received an honorary doctorate degree from José Rizal University, Philippines, in recognition of his efforts with the Alllights Village Project.

GPC Atlanta 2012 Presents a New Paradigm for Global Peace

By Young Chul Choi ftdog@donga.com
Atlanta, Georgia, United States

Unification of North and South Korea a key to world peace

“The ultimate resolution to tensions in Northeast Asia is the reunification of the Korean peninsula. The international community must proactively cooperate to support Korean reunification.”In 2012, political leaders in the U.S., Japan, China, and Russia were newly elected. It was the same for North and South Korea. These significant changes in leadership will be accompanied by changes in the national leadership, and in turn will have major impact on the political situation of Northeast Asia.

Northeast Asian Peace is a critical issue for the entire world that has tremendous implications on not only security and peacekeeping, but for the global economy.

Leaders from different levels convened at GPC Atlanta agreed, “The ultimate resolution to tensions in Northeast Asia is the reunification of the Korean peninsula. The international community must proactively cooperate to support Korean reunification.” They acknowledged that Korean reunification is an issue that has significance not only to Northeast Asia but the world. Dr. Moon noted in his keynote address that North Korea and the Middle East have military ties. The record breaking U.S. deficit is fueled by enormous government spending to prevent nuclear proliferation and provocation.

Experts from various fields were impressed with Dr. Moon’s keynote address that connected three critical challenges: interfaith cooperation for peace, the need for a hemispheric great awakening in North and South America and Korean Unification. One participant commented, “This is an entirely new approach.”

In 2012, Dr. Moon and GPF-Korea launched the “Korea United Campaign”. The campaign is an integrated movement of grassroots and high level campaigns that connects reunification to everyday practice. The initiative has brought together 400 civic organizations to develop a shared vision for a united Korea. In his keynote at GPC Atlanta, Dr. Moon particularly emphasized the importance of a grassroots driven movement for unification. During the conference, Kyungnam University Emeritus Professor Tae Hwan Kwak hosted a session on reunification of Korean peninsula. Scholars representing the U.S., Japan, Russia, and China discussed each nation’s view and role for Korean unification.

GPC 2012 also attracted renowned international policy research institutions such as Brookings Institution and the Heritage Foundation. The Carter Center co-hosted the Americas Summit, the King Center held a special session on the

Legacy of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement, and the Points of Light Foundation, held special sessions on volunteerism and social entrepreneurship. Dr. Douglas Johnston, America’s premier expert in religion and diplomacy, gave a particularly interesting presentation.

GPC Atlanta 2012 concluded that world peace cannot be achieved without considering humanity’s fundamental values. It called on leaders in every sector of moral principles and values to lead a spiritual great awakening. GPC 2013 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the multi-cultural, inter-religious center of Asia.

GPC Atlanta 2012 Presents a New Paradigm for Global Peace

By Young Chul Choi ftdog@donga.com
Atlanta, Georgia, United States

Former Heads of State from North and South America Promote a Vision of Hemispheric Cooperation for Mutual Prosperity

During GPC Atlanta, 10 former Heads of State from 8 South American countries and delegations from 40-nations convened to launch a mission committed to a hemispheric Great Awakening in North and South America. An additional 8 former Heads of State from South America, who were not present, sent video messages of support. Together they launched a historic declaration, the Atlanta Declaration for Hemispheric Cooperation, resolving to use their past experience and leadership to work for the mutual prosperity of North and South America.

Based on its substantial Christian foundation, the American hemisphere has a common ethic. However, North and South have walked disparate paths, harboring a protracted love-and-hate relationship. For example, the phrase ‘Down with American Imperialism’ became popular when anti-U.S. sentiments in South America peaked during the Falklands Wars, a territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom (U.K.) when the U.S. sided with the U.K.

Over the past decade, vast numbers of Latin Americans have crossed the border into the United States to pursue the “American Dream”. Today, the Hispanic population in the U.S. has surpassed Blacks to become the largest minority. No longer can it be politically and economically disregarded. Resolving the discrimination and contempt towards the Hispanic population is critical to resolving the problem between North and South America.

The United States can no longer ignore the importance of Latin America. As the economic recession in the United States continues since the financial crisis in 2008, the fast-growing Latin American economic region could offer a way forward. Circumstances have prepared North and South America to redefine their relationship and secure peace and equality in the American hemisphere. In his keynote address at the GPC opening plenary, Dr. Moon called for a Hemispheric Great Awakening through North and South America based on a consensus of common spiritual values. Dr. Moon noted, “North and South America have shared values that emerge from their common Christian heritage. Cooperation and unity should be based on these universal principles. This is how the western hemisphere can recover its moral authority and make positive impact around the world.”

Over the past two years, GPF in Latin America has promoted moral and innovative leadership and increased regional and hemispheric cooperation based on shared values. The results are reflected in two significant declarations, the Asuncion Declaration issued during the 2010 Global Peace Leadership Conference in Paraguay and the Brasilia Declaration pronounced in Brazil during the 2011 Global Peace Leadership Conference. The Americas Summit commenced at The Carter Center and was integrated within GPC Atlanta. The summit sought to discover avenues for improved hemispheric relations based on shared values and common challenges for lasting peace and mutual prosperity for North and South America..

“the unity and integration of the Americas must be based on the recognition and respect of unique national and cultural identities, and that efforts should be directed at obtaining not personal advantages but a common advantage.” ~Atlanta Declaration for Hemispheric Cooperation The summit concluded with the establishment of the Latin American Presidential Mission. The declaration was published in the name of 19 former presidents. Built upon the recognition of the vision of “One Family Under God”, it affirms, “that the unity and integration of the Americas must be based on the recognition and respect of unique national and cultural identities, and that efforts should be directed at obtaining not personal advantages but a common advantage.”

Former Guatemalan president Vinicio Cerezo said, ”A leader has to have a special character, with thought and skill, but also deep moral conviction to follow a path marked by his principles.” He added, “In international relations and politics, the leader of each nation should not abandon his ethical values under any circumstances.”

“The commitment of the United States is to the belief that fairness, not force should lie at the heart of our dealings with the nations of the world. If any agreement is to last, it must serve the best interest of both nations.” ~Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

Dr. Jennifer McCoy, director of the Carter Center’s Americas Program, stressed ethics among nations quoting former President Jimmy Carter. “The commitment of the United States is to the belief that fairness, not force should lie at the heart of our dealings with the nations of the world. If any agreement is to last, it must serve the best interest of both nations.” Meanwhile, business leaders from around the world participated in the Global Peace Business Forum to discuss how trade and commerce can generate economic prosperity in North and South America, Africa, and the Iraq-Kurdish region. They agreed that the crisis of modern capitalism rooted in corruption and greed can be resolved through moral values and principles in business. Dr. Manu Chandaria, CEO of one of Africa’s largest businesses, Comcraft Group, received resounding applause when he said, “To offer economic opportunity to Africa is the realistic means to establishing world peace.”.
