“When we practice a lifestyle of service, truly living for others, we exemplify the highest ideals of human character.”

Dr. Hyun Jin P. Moon (Global Peace Convention, Philippines, 2009)

The holiday season is often seen as a time for reflection, gratitude, and giving. It’s a time when communities come together, whether through family gatherings, charity events, or volunteer work. Yet, it’s also a moment to reflect on something deeper: the role that service plays in building peace around the world.

One inspiring example of this principle in action during this last holiday season comes from Candelaria, Quezon, where the Global Peace Foundation Philippines (GPF Philippines) and local partners launched an impactful initiative that not only lit up homes but also brightened the futures of many residents.

Light as a Symbol of Hope and Innovation

In a heartwarming display of community service, GPF Philippines handed over 100 solar lanterns and 10 solar street lights to the residents of Candelaria as part of the All-Lights Village initiative. This project, which serves as both a Christmas gift and a year-round solution to rural electrification, underscores the significance of moral leadership and innovative thinking in addressing some of the world’s most persistent challenges.

The project’s impact extends beyond its practical benefits. Solar-powered lanterns and streetlights don’t just provide light; they offer hope and security, transforming the way communities live and thrive. This act of service represents the powerful intersection of sustainability, renewable energy, and social impact—all essential elements of a brighter, more equitable future.

Developing Moral Leadership Through Service

At the heart of every service project lies the opportunity for moral leadership. Leaders in the project understand that true leadership goes beyond authority or decision-making—it is about creating positive change and inspiring others to act with compassion and responsibility. The executive director of GPF Philippines talked about the symbolic role of light—representing hope, unity, and progress—and highlighted how service can lead to transformative leadership.

Such leadership is about much more than solving immediate problems. It’s about cultivating values like integrity, compassion, and selflessness. By actively engaging in service, leaders demonstrate their commitment to improving the well-being of others, which in turn fosters a culture of empathy and collaboration. Whether it’s through giving resources, time, or expertise, leaders who embrace service as a core tenet of their mission create ripple effects of positive change.

Innovative Solutions to Real-World Problems

The All-Lights Village initiative doesn’t just address an immediate need for light; it embodies an innovative approach to tackling long-term issues. In rural areas like Candelaria, access to reliable electricity is often limited. Solar-powered lanterns and streetlights are a sustainable solution that enhances safety and mobility and reduces dependency on conventional energy sources.

This is where the power of innovation intersects with moral leadership. By harnessing renewable energy to provide light, this initiative is helping to break the cycle of poverty while also addressing environmental concerns. It showcases how out-of-the-box thinking—in this case, solar technology—can offer practical, scalable solutions to global challenges like rural electrification and climate change.

The program’s success is due, in large part, to the collaborative efforts of multiple partners. A leader of a local organization eloquently captured the essence of this partnership by highlighting how collective action can result in lasting change. “True progress begins when we come together, with compassion and commitment, to light the way for others,” she said. This statement exemplifies the power of community-based solutions, where each partner brings unique strengths to the table for the greater good.

The Role of Service in Building Stronger Communities

The All-Lights Village initiative is a reminder that sustainable development requires more than just financial investment or technology. It requires a commitment to the well-being of others and an acknowledgment that progress is not just about improving infrastructure—it’s about improving lives. As GPF Philippines continues to lead such initiatives, they reaffirm their commitment to fostering self-reliant and resilient communities, guided by the principle of “living for the greater good.”

This concept of service-driven leadership is crucial in the 21st century, where challenges like environmental sustainability, poverty, and inequality continue to test our collective ability to innovate and collaborate. It is through service—whether it’s bringing light to a rural community, helping those in need, or offering new solutions to persistent problems—that we unlock the true potential of leadership and innovation.

Conclusion: Leading by Example

The Global Peace Foundation’s initiative in Candelaria exemplifies the profound impact of service in moral leadership and innovative solutions. It serves as a powerful reminder that true leadership doesn’t reside only in boardrooms or decision-making offices. Sometimes, it’s in the simple, everyday acts of service that leaders show the world what it means to care, innovate, and build a brighter future for all.

As we face the world’s most pressing challenges, let us take inspiration from these acts of giving. Let us embrace service as a core value in leadership, always seeking new and better ways to solve problems and uplift communities. When we lead with compassion and a commitment to the greater good, we not only solve problems—we ignite the light of hope that can guide others toward a brighter, more sustainable future.

Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon
Global Youth Summit Philippines

Youth leadership development plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of nations, particularly in countries like Tanzania, India, Mongolia, and Nigeria, where large youth populations face significant socio-economic challenges. These challenges, if not addressed, can lead to increased unemployment, social unrest, and poverty. However, with the right initiatives, young people can become a driving force for economic growth, peacebuilding, and social cohesion. The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) has recognized the importance of empowering youth through moral and innovative leadership training, entrepreneurial development, and social engagement. Their programs across these countries aim to nurture youth into proactive leaders committed to positive societal transformation.

The following is a summary of recent activities of the Global Peace Foundation and its values-based approach to peacebuilding.

Tanzania’s Youth Bulge: Opportunities and Challenges

Tanzania, as with many developing nations, faces a “youth bulge,” with nearly one-third of the population under the age of 35, according to the 2022 national census. This demographic represents both significant potential and daunting challenges. On one hand, young people can drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic dynamism. On the other, they place immense pressure on the country’s infrastructure, education systems, and healthcare services.

Key challenges faced by Tanzanian youth include income insecurity, where few graduates secure formal sector jobs, and poor education quality, particularly in rural areas. Many young people drop out of school due to factors like poverty, early marriages, and limited opportunities. Additionally, health issues, such as mental health problems, malaria, and reproductive health challenges, are rampant, with limited access to treatment.

Social problems such as gender-based violence, child marriages, and teenage pregnancies further exacerbate these challenges, leading to increased poverty, rising crime rates, and political apathy among the youth. One critical issue is the underrepresentation of youth in decision-making roles at both the national and local levels, which hinders effective policy development and perpetuates a cycle of disempowerment.

To address these issues, GPF Tanzania has initiated programs to empower youth with the tools they need for personal and professional growth. In 2024, GPF organized an event on International Youth Day in Mtwara, focusing on the role of youth in peacebuilding and digital technology for economic empowerment. The event, which attracted over 1,500 youth participants, underscored the importance of digital literacy and responsible technology use in fostering economic growth, particularly in areas like agriculture, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and artificial intelligence (AI).

While technology presents vast opportunities for economic development, it also carries risks like cyberbullying and misinformation, which can disrupt communities. GPF’s goal is to help Tanzanian youth harness the power of digital tools to advance peace and social change while promoting responsible use and critical thinking.

Peacebuilding and Leadership in India and Beyond: The Global Peace Foundation’s Approach

On a broader scale, GPF is deeply invested in peacebuilding and leadership development for youth, aiming to create a generation of leaders committed to unity, peace, and sustainable development. An example of this is the Peacebuilding Leadership Training workshop held in September 2024. The workshop brought together approximately 100 students from diverse fields, including nursing, business, and medical sciences, to explore the role of youth in peacebuilding.

The training focused on developing leadership skills rooted in empathy, active listening, and interfaith cooperation. The chairman of GPF India inspired participants by discussing the crucial role of youth in fostering peace and the concept of a “peace army” envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi. The workshop included meditation, interfaith dialogue, and community service, encouraging students to integrate these values into their professional and personal lives.

One key outcome of the workshop was the launch of Youth Peace Clubs, designed to keep participants engaged in ongoing peacebuilding activities. The event emphasized the need for young people to be proactive in addressing global challenges such as conflict, inequality, and climate change.

Youth Empowerment Through Entrepreneurship: NIYED Program in Nigeria

Entrepreneurship is another essential avenue for youth empowerment, particularly in addressing unemployment and underemployment—two critical challenges faced by young people in many countries. In Nigeria, where a large percentage of youth struggle to find meaningful employment, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) has partnered with organizations like Besouro Social Development Agency to run the Nigerian Youths Entrepreneurship for Development (NIYED) program.

Launched in July 2024, the NIYED program is a three-month virtual training initiative aimed at young Nigerians aged 18-30 who have either started a business or have an idea for one. The program provides theoretical content and practical skills across ten training sessions, focusing on areas like business planning, branding, marketing, and the use of digital tools for business development. The program also emphasizes mentorship and community service, encouraging participants to integrate social responsibility into their entrepreneurial ventures.

More than 60 young Nigerians from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds participated in the first phase of the program, which culminated in the creation of actionable business plans. A key element of the program was the one-on-one mentorship, which helped participants navigate the challenges of starting and growing businesses.

Conclusion: A Vision for Global Peace and Prosperity

The youth in Tanzania, India, Mongolia, and Nigeria represent a vast and untapped reservoir of potential. With the right investments in education, technology, peacebuilding, and entrepreneurship, they can become powerful agents of change, driving not only economic growth but also social cohesion and global peace.

Initiatives like GPF’s programs in these countries are crucial in equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to navigate the complexities of the modern world. By promoting leadership, entrepreneurship, and community service, these programs are laying the groundwork for a more peaceful, prosperous, and connected future, where young people from all backgrounds can work together for the common good and build One Family under God. GPF’s work shows that empowering youth isn’t just about teaching them how to succeed—it’s about inspiring them to lead with compassion, integrity, and a commitment to a better world.

It was a fateful day that Milton encountered a message that would ignite his heart, mind and his world. Milton grew up in Kampala, Uganda and dreamed of making his nation strong and prosperous. In 2008, he had settled in Kenya to grow a small business. While he still carried dreams of a better world, he put them aside to focus on work.

His friend invited him to join a youth leadership program, so he attended the first of a 3-day Global Peace Leadership Conference. It was here that he heard of the ideal of One Family Under God that stirred awake the dreams of his childhood.

In his address, Chairman and co-founder of Global Peace Foundation, Dr. Hyun Jin P. Moon detailed a vision for a world of lasting peace and shared prosperity, a world guided by the vision of “One Family Under God.” In short, he encouraged those in the audience to join together to bring substance to this vision which he believed was alive in every heart of Africa.

Teachers in Uganda participate in Character and Creativity training workshop

Fast forward to 2018, Milton had taken up Dr. Moon’s charge on that day to form his own branch of Global Peace Foundation in Uganda. As the Uganda chapter prepared for a Global Peace Leadership Conference last August, we look back to the vision for Uganda and Africa that inspired Milton as shared on national television network Uganda Broadcasting Corporation and how this vision has taken shape.

In his interview, Milton called for “a new strategy, new approaches, in terms of solving the root problems… that have been challenging not just his home country of Uganda but the world at large.”

He saw that solving the root problems for all Africa start by cultivating the “core content of character and creativity.”

He observed:

Before we can talk about uniting all of Africa, we need our youth to start having shared values, principles, shared expression for peace and prosperity. So their hands can be able to be self-reliant, to be able to work with others, to have partnerships, to look beyond their nose.

We need national values that can transcend lines of identity and bring people together to align objectives, agendas. […] If we can come together as a nation, we can attract peace, investment, stability, etc.

In casting his dream for Africa “to have powerful, vibrant economies” he saw the most critical way forward to change mindsets. Contrary to popular belief, Milton saw capital as coming first and foremost from a mindset and as such he has been working in Uganda to raise the next generation of moral, innovative leaders through a focus on character and creativity.

To do this, he explained the need to look at leadership itself differently; to work bottom up: with families, faith leaders, community leaders to prepare the next generation.

Family, Milton asserted, is the primary place to prepare children to become “global changemakers, peacebuilders”. From the family, children grow into their communities and schools, eventually growing into active citizens who transform their society, nation, and the world.

Children in a CCI classroom in Kenya

He pointed to the efforts of GPF in Kenya where its Character and Creativity Initiative has been nurturing global changemakers. In the classrooms, he encouraged evaluating not only academic performance and skills but to evaluate character, conduct, and creativity. To this end, Kenya CCI has evaluations on conduct and creativity and has created leadership hubs in schools to share ideas, invent, create and raise social entrepreneurs.

Milton also pointed to the critical role that faith leaders play in Uganda. He noted that in the country, every week, people of faith hear the messages of the faith leaders in their own communities. Were faith leaders to align their message in the direction of a shared national vision for peace, character, and creativity, there would be a transformation on a national scale.

There are always a million different paths a person might take. Milton chose to take up a global dream and to make it a reality in Uganda on that day in 2008. He continues on today with his team in Uganda to push forward his dreams, their dreams, and our dreams of One Family Under God.

How will your dreams take shape?

But reconciliation cannot be forced; it has to occur naturally from the heart”

Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon
Global Peace Convention 2012 in Atlanta

Conflict between people has always existed, yet globalization today has now transformed what were once local conflicts into global issues. And while it is difficult to pinpoint a single cause for any conflict, the path to reconciliation and peace must include a fundamental shift in the human mind and heart.

At a recent forum in DC hosted by Global Peace Foundation – USA, social activist Ali Abu Awwad and Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger spoke on the divide between Israelis and Palestinians on the West Bank.

Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger, founder of Faiths in Conversation and director of Roots.

Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger, self-described as a Jew, Zionist and a Settler living on the West Bank, shared his story of how he had lived 33 years of his life in an area where there were 9 Palestinians for every one Israeli. Yet in those 33 years, he had managed to have never met a single Palestinian.

“I didn’t see them, I was blind,” he remarked.

One day, as he was driving some Protestant pastors to Jewish settlements along the West Bank, he stopped the car for a hitchhiker. One of the pastors remarked, “You’re such a nice guy. You pick up hitchhikers.”

The Rabbi responded, “We do pick up hitchhikers; we trust each other; I pick up every person who sticks up his finger.”

And yet as he finished the sentence, he realized he was lying. He didn’t pick up every person who stuck up his finger–he only picked up Jewish hitchhikers. In that moment, he realized he still had “spiritual and moral work to do” and soon became involved, through referral by a Global Peace Foundation staff member, with “Roots”, a joint Palestinian and Israeli peacebuilding initiative based in the West Bank.

Palestinian nonviolent activist Ali Abu Awwad

On the other side of the divide, Mr. Ali Abu Awwad, a Palestinian, shared his story about his life following the death of his brother at the hands of an Israeli police officer. He was, understandably, filled with hatred and distrust towards Israelis. Yet only a week after his brother’s death, a group of Israeli parents visited his house “crying the same colors of tears as my mother”, to offer comfort to his family.

For Awwad, this experience was shocking, as he was accustomed to only seeing Israel’s stone-faced politicians and armed military police at government security checkpoints. It was when he saw the human side of Israel that his perspective began to shift. And while his was not a straightforward or clear trajectory, he soon became a nonviolent activist working for peace through initiatives such as Roots.

Rabbi Schlesinger and Mr. Awwad’s stories both point to the moral imperative to see beyond identity-based lines. Both are powerful testaments to the nobility latent within the human spirit that Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon seeks to uplift and promote through the activities of the Global Peace Foundation. Peace can and must come about naturally from within the hearts of men and could never successfully be imposed through political or legal arguments.

As seen in the example of Rabbi Schlesinger and Mr. Awwad, who tour the world speaking on going beyond being ‘Pro-Israel’ and ‘Pro-Palestine’ to being ‘Pro-solution’, there is a fundamental truth that all people can recognize when given the opportunity. We need to work to acknowledge that what we share, rooted in our divine nature, is greater than what divides us.

“When I first met Rev. Hayab,” reflected Sheik Maraya, “my first thought was that I have met someone from my original family, the family of Adam and Eve. The first thing expected as a Muslim is that whenever you meet another human, if younger than you, you consider him a younger brother or sister.

“From the Islamic point of view, as found in the Quran, there is no basis to dishonor him or her on basis of some racial, religious or tribal identification. Was there ever a time that the prophet Muhammad dishonored a person because he was practicing another religion? No. As a Muslim you are enjoined to be kind and just to all regardless of any difference, particularly religious difference. If one goes by the tenet of Islam you are expected to consider the religion of others as sacrosanct.”

When I first met Rev. Hayab,” reflected Sheik Maraya, “my first thought was that I have met someone from my original family, the family of Adam and Eve.

Sheik Maraya mused that conflict and hostility exists because the majority of Christians and Muslims are ignorant of the rudimentary teachings of their faith. “That is why they are carried away and pass judgment on the basis of sentiment. But the Quran says that even if you hate someone you must not allow that sentiment to lead to injustice to others.”

For the common vision and understanding of One Family Under God to truly take root, we need partners and models of this vision. The GPF approach essentially seeks to create relationships that model the ideal of One Family Under God. Relationships such as the one between Sheik Maraya and Reverend Hayab are key to building peace between groups of different backgrounds and religions.

Rev. Joseph Hayab (far right) and Sheik Abdulahi Marya, (far left) were the co-facilitators for Global Peace Foundation’s entire One Family Under God campaign’s local peacebuilding programs in Nigeria.

The “Kaduna twins” Rev. Joseph Hayab and Sheik Abdulahi Marya, were the co-facilitators for the entire One Family Under God campaign’s local peacebuilding programs. Having both a Christian and a Muslim spiritual leader as the models of interfaith leadership was essential for every aspect of this program from its planning, the introduction of the program to the traditional rulers and stakeholders in each community, to the actual educational 3-day training program and follow up programs. Given that the interfaith programming inevitably included members and leaders from both Christian and Muslim faith traditions, Rev. Hayab and Sheik Maraya were able, together and separately, to handle problems, questions, concerns from people of both traditions.

“We chose to use our God-given position to influence our community for good”

Moreover, the warm nature of their personal relationship and obvious respect for one another, regardless of differences in faith or practice, inspired participants to seek out the same kind of relationship with one another, without even being directly encouraged to do so.

So, in building One Family Under God, how you can replicate the Rev. Hayab/Sheik Maraya model in your own community?

The Dutsen-Wai community is located in the northern part of Kaduna state in central Nigeria. The community faced a number of communal crises including farm land disputes, marital and political tensions. While these disputes are commonplace and occur within in any given community, recent political and religious tensions have escalated tensions to a boiling point.

The rise of radical religious groups such as Boko Haram and Ansaru spread fear and hate between Christians and Muslims, dividing communities and families. Most unfortunate, in conflicts between religion and tribe, children are taught to hate and fear “the Other” – perpetuating the same in the next generation.

For example, years earlier in Dutsen-Wai, the schoolchildren of Christian and Muslim families used to attend the same schools without incident but a local resident from the community recalled that increased tension and incidents between Muslims and Christians had forced children to stop attending religiously mixed schools.

Yet remarkably, within a few months of a Global Peace Foundation (GPF) community peacebuilding program, a resident noted that: “children of Christian faith now attend Muslim schools and vice versa. And if we can revive the culture of combined schools, we can also restore our peaceful coexistence.”

In other developments in Dutsen-Wai, following the initial GPF intervention, youth of different faiths have come together and to form a football club.

“Children of Christian faith now attend Muslim schools and vice versa. And if we can revive the culture of combined schools, we can also restore our peaceful coexistence.” Resident of Dutsen-Wai

Rev. Hayab and Sheik Maraya lead the peacebuilding capacity building workshop in Dutsen-Wai, a region of Kaduna State, Nigeria.

Even beyond religion, the intervention encouraged people to reach beyond tribes to create new bonds of trust between distinct communities. “As a result of GPF’s intervention, Fulani children during holidays visit me at home while I also send my children to them as well,” a local Dutsen-Wai resident named Margret noted proudly.

When we start to see that we are One Family Under God, we can then imagine new possibilities. Yet these possibilities can only be realized when we begin to also behave as One Family Under God.

The communities in Dutsen-Wai have begun to do this. How might you do this in yours?

We stood on the observatory looking across the 38th parallel. Beyond the barbed wire I could see bald hills rolling from one side of the horizon to the other.

It had taken us 50 km to bike from Seoul to Imjinkak. It was our simple act for Korean Unification.

In Korea there is a term, “jung sung,” which roughly means “act of sincerity.” It is said that an act of true sincerity can move heaven. The bike ride was our attempt to offer “jung sung” and coax Unification to come even one day sooner.

And that day, I think I came one step closer to Unification in my heart. “Suzy” stood next to me on the observatory. “Suzy” is originally from the other side of the line. She was part of the team that had made it through the 50 km journey. I think it might have been her first time since leaving that she could gaze at her homeland.

She bit her trembling lower lip and squeezed her eyes shut, willing the tears that were already seeping out to stay back. But they didn’t listen. Her knuckles were white from the strain on her fingers as she gripped the barricade and stared across the empty grassland. Somewhere, beyond those hills were her parents, her siblings, her aunts, uncles, grandparents –her family.

What was she doing here so far from them? Why couldn’t she run across that field to find them and live with them again?

What was this line decorated with wire? Why was it keeping her from her family?

The Demilitarized Zone is not just a physical division on which either side soldiers stand guard against… against who? Cousins? Brothers? Children? Parents? The DMZ is a line drawn across the hearts of every Korean, dividing families, relatives, a people torn in two for almost 60 years.

During that same summer, I joined the “Everyday Unification Movement.” We did donation drives on buses, even passing through Gangnam, asking people to donate money to support a bakery in North Korea that would feed the village children. We visited housing projects for defectors, spending time laughing, exchanging stories and eating sweets with them. And we biked 50 km, a gesture to say, “We are ready to have this line come down.”When I reflect on that summer, I realize that as I asked people to support the “Everyday Unification Movement” the line inside of me came down. And in essence, that is what the movement is asking every Korean to do – contribute to a movement that melts the line that has stood in every heart, family, neighborhood, and our people.

It can start small, like consciously confronting the wall that we raise when we hear the sharp Northern accent, or consciously crossing the line when we open our wallets in order to feed the children across the border. That summer, the line that stood between me and “Suzy” came down, she is no longer a “Northern defector” to me; she is my sister.

I go back sometimes, to that day on the observatory to stand next to Suzy and imagine that we walk across that field together. I image that we meet her parents and I get to know a new part of me. Maybe we’ll bring some of her favorite snacks. I hear Choco-Pies are pretty popular.

When I come back from that dream, I remember that I have a mind, two hands, a mouth and feet that can take action in my everyday life to wear away that line that stands between Suzy and her family.

Won’t you join me?

~This piece is based off of a testimony of a youth volunteer who participated in a summer leadership exchange program in Korea.

“The threat of religious extremism cannot be resolved by political or economic solutions alone. A true and lasting resolution must be rooted in faith and expressed through practical spirituality. Faith leaders must step beyond the confines of their own sectarian or denominational traditions, and act together as true spiritual leaders, representing God’s hope for the world, not just the interests of a particular religion.”

Participants hold placards saying, “Whether we are Moslem or Christian, We are One Family Under God.”

The Global Peace Foundation just posted a report highlighting the One Family Under God Campaign that has arisen in Nigeria as a coordinated effort to mitigate extremism and foster social cohesion among the religiously diverse population in Nigeria.

Religious leaders and traditional rulers have stepped up to convey the vision that whether they are Muslim, Christian or from other faith traditions, Nigerians are all, “One Family under God,” and to that end they share a common destiny and responsibility towards each other.

Below is the update:

The challenges of building social cohesion and shared agreements among a diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, religiously plural society is highly visible in Nigeria today. 100 years after the amalgamation of the country and nearly 50 years since its independence, Nigeria continues the struggle to build national cohesion amidst sharp regional divisions, mounting tensions over the 2015 elections and the ongoing violence of religious extremists such as Boko Haram and Ansaru.

Kaduna State is a microcosm of Nigeria, evenly split between Muslim and Christian citizens. (Credit: UN Maps)

At the heart of Nigeria is the district of Kaduna, which has been seen as a microcosm of the country, with the population evenly divided between Christians in the south and Muslims in the North. A place that has been much violence in the past, the Global Peace Foundation-Nigeria and its partner organizations are working here to build a common vision and a robust interfaith movement to substantialize the dream of “One Family Under God.”

The One Family Under God campaign was initiated at the Global Peace Leadership Conference in Abuja in 2013. It is a values-based approach to peacebuilding and community development that taps the moral authority of religious leaders and traditional rulers. GPF Nigeria has worked to educate faith leaders and encourage substantial cooperation between faith communities through its Interfaith and Youth Leadership Retreats.

“Leave this summit with a resolve be peacemakers in our families, neighbourhood, communities, the state and the country. If each and every one of us resolves to do this, we can rest assured that peace will pervade our state and our country shall become heaven of peace once again.”

~ Her Excellency, Hajiya (Dr.) Amina Namadi Sambo

Amina Namadi Sambo presides over the Kaduna Peace Summit in 2014.

In 2014, these retreats were held in the three regions of Kaduna state during June and July, in cooperation with the Nigerian Inter-Faith Action Association and the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution. The retreats engage Nigerian faith and youth leaders of diverse religious beliefs to challenge attitudes and behaviors through dialogue and direct engagement between people of different tribal, ethnic and religious identities. As “One Family Under God,” Nigerians are challenged to build a more equitable, inclusive and cooperative society based on a common vision, universal principles and shared values.

The success of these retreats is evident in the follow up Kaduna Peace Summit held later in 2014 on October 23rd, which drew over 700 participants. The Grand Patron of GPF Nigeria, Her Excellency, Hajiya (Dr.) Amina Namadi Sambo, the wife of the Vice President of Nigeria presided over the convening and urged all the participants “leave this summit with a resolve be peacemakers in our families, neighbourhood, communities, the state and the country. If each and every one of us resolves to do this, we can rest assured that peace will pervade our state and our country shall become heaven of peace once again.”

The results of these kinds of programs hinge on the ability of participants to translate a change in consciousness into the way one lives in the day to day.

Following the Kaduna retreats, Muslim and Christian communities have begun to work together to manifest the vision of One Family Under God. Projects between the Muslim and Christian communities that developed out of the retreats have included building a local bridge, working to improve hospital security, raising funds together to buy classroom equipment for a local interfaith school, among many others. There have also been declarations by local interfaith groups who intend to prevent and stop the use of violence in the upcoming elections.

While Nigeria today is still far from peace and shared prosperity, there are small faith communities growing and nurturing the vision and mindset of One Family Under God. Let us work together with them in our own communities.

“Where can peace be found? Can you legislate it? Can you build it through economics, politics, or diplomacy? No. You have to change the hearts of men.

When we live for the sake of others, we are building a new cultural paradigm and breaking down barriers, not with words, but through action. In the process of breaking down those barriers, we transform ourselves, our families, our neighborhoods, our nation, and eventually the world. This is how you find peace.”

This week the Global Peace Foundation announced that their Mongolia chapter’s online volunteer community, “My Club,” was recognized for “Best Voluntary Activity of 2014” by the Network of Voluntary Organizations at a special program hosted at the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme of Mongolia on International Volunteer Day.

International Volunteer Day is an official United Nations International Day designated to recognize central role of volunteer efforts in securing peace and development.

As the quote above points out, volunteering is not just about tackling a shared social or economic issue, it is about a transformation of the heart. Service is an act that affirms humanity’s connection to each other and taps into a divine ability to put others before oneself.

The Global Peace Foundation-Mongolia has engaged young university students from all parts of the nation in creative projects to address literacy, environmental sustainability, and elder and family care.

Local university student volunteer reads to kindergarten students before naptime in Mongolia.

The eye-catching photo on the report is from the “Desk Book” project. It depicts a university student reading to local kindergarten children right before nap time.

According to the Service for Peace approach, the short time the university student invests is not only about increasing the children’s literacy, but about acknowledging the kinship between she and the children. The simple act of reading to children she barely knows says, “I may not know you, but I care about you, because we are all family.” For the children, it is an affirmation of the larger national and global community that is concerned for them.

Take a moment, 10 minutes, to serve, and reflect on the transformation that occurs, the small piece of peace that emerges as one puts the good of humanity first.
