Dr. Hyun Jin P. Moon announced the launch of the Global Peace Leadership Corps (GPCorps) in December 2023. The corps aims to become the premier, global initiative through which young leaders engage in peacebuilding and service programs to address critical issues, motivated by the vision of One Family Under God. In 2024, the GPCorps has already trained over 2,500 young leaders across 17 locations in the Philippines.

GPCorps 2024 in the Philippines emphasized key areas such as conflict resolution, cultural understanding, and sustainable development. Through a mix of workshops, seminars, and hands-on projects, participants learned how to lead initiatives that foster peace within their communities. The goal was to empower these young leaders to address global issues with both confidence and creativity.

Each of the 17 GPCorps sites, along with this year’s Global Youth Summit, was linked to specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which encompass critical issues like poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability. By aligning with these goals, the GPCorps ensured that participants not only gained insights into peacebuilding but also learned to tackle these vital global challenges.

A standout feature of the GPCorps was the opportunity for participants to collaborate with local and international experts. These partnerships aimed to inspire innovative ideas and solutions for the challenges communities face worldwide. Learning from experienced professionals deepened participants’ understanding of their chosen issues and equipped them with effective strategies to create positive change.

The program was held in various locations throughout the Philippines, reflecting the country’s rich cultural diversity. This thoughtful approach ensured that youth from all regions could engage in peacebuilding and sustainable development efforts within their own communities.

Participants included members of well-known organizations like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines, student council leaders from universities, and other enthusiastic young individuals. The program fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas, helping participants grow as leaders and learn from one another.

The success of GPCorps was largely driven by the commitment of its volunteers. These dedicated individuals contributed their time and expertise, ensuring the program’s smooth operation. Many had previous summit experience, which was invaluable in making this year’s initiative successful.

From the 2,500 trained leaders, 150 outstanding individuals will be selected for advanced specialized training—50 from Luzon, 50 from Visayas, and 50 from Mindanao. This selected group will receive comprehensive training that includes international exposure and local project implementation, enhancing their capacity to effect meaningful change in their regions.

The Global Peace Leadership Corps 2024 is more than just a training initiative; it is a movement aimed at empowering young people to actively contribute to a peaceful and sustainable future. By addressing real-world issues and aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, GPCorps 2024 provides a vital platform for young leaders to develop the skills needed to make a lasting impact. As the world grapples with increasing challenges related to conflict, inequality, and environmental degradation, the demand for skilled peacebuilders has never been greater. GPCorps 2024 is rising to this challenge by preparing the leaders of tomorrow to create a better future for all.

The Global Youth Summit (GYS) is an annual program that has been gathering thousands of young people in the Philippines for over a decade to promote moral and innovative leadership and bring youth to the forefront as creative problem-solvers for the country’s most pressing issues.

GYS 2024, a collaborative effort between SM Cares and the Global Peace Foundation, offered a groundbreaking experience for Filipino youth by uniting over 12,000 emerging leaders from across the nation to tackle some of the country’s most urgent issues. Spanning 17 key locations throughout the Philippines, this year’s summit created a remarkable opportunity for innovation, critical thinking, and collaborative leadership, all geared towards advancing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This event featured a range of activities aimed at addressing global issues in technology, health, education, and sustainable development. The summit’s main goal was to cultivate a network of empowered Youth Leaders dedicated to fostering ethical and innovative leadership, advancing sustainable development, and enhancing cross-cultural understanding. This was notably showcased through the eagerly awaited Seed Grant Competition, which inspired participants to develop and execute solutions aligned with the SDGs.

The regional president of GPF Asia Pacific underscored the summit’s broader vision of global impact and collaboration saying that he hopes the young leaders will create a nation where everyone can reap the benefits.

In a pioneering move, GYS 2024 was held concurrently at 17 different locations nationwide, with each site concentrating on a particular SDG. This setup allowed discussions and activities to be customized to address the specific challenges of each area and ensured that youth from every region could actively participate in the global dialogue.

Representatives from GPF Philippines emphasized the need to work together, empowering each other and actively engaging in creating a sustainable future.

The program was carefully crafted to motivate and prepare the next generation of leaders with the skills and insights necessary for creating a better world. Interactive elements, such as Q&A sessions following each speaker’s talk and the highly anticipated #GYSTakeaways, provided participants with opportunities to explore the issues more deeply and consider practical solutions.

A program director for SM Cares reinforced fairness and equity as central to sustainable development.

Cultural performances opened each summit location, showcasing the Philippines’ rich heritage and enhancing participants’ cultural awareness. This lively celebration of local traditions provided a vibrant start to the ensuing discussions.

Attendees comprised members from accredited youth organizations affiliated with local government units, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines, student council officers from state colleges and universities, and engaged youth advocates from various groups. These participants represented a broad spectrum of the nation’s youth, all united by a common dedication to sustainable development.

The success of #GYS2024 was greatly facilitated by the devoted volunteers from the Global Peace Leadership Corps, who were crucial to the event’s success. Many had previously participated in past summits, while others were experiencing it for the first time. Their steadfast dedication and enthusiasm were vital in fulfilling the summit’s goal of empowering youth leadership.

Aligned with the UN SDGs and reaching across the Philippines, the Global Youth Summit 2024 emerged as a vital platform for young people to engage with and address global challenges. This summit represented a major advance in empowering youth to lead efforts toward a sustainable and prosperous future for everyone. The Global Youth Summit 2024 was more than just an event; it marked the start of a movement, positioning the youth at the forefront of shaping a sustainable future.

In June, GPF India brought together twenty-three underprivileged children from the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Learning Center and provided them with an opportunity to visit the renowned National Science Centre in New Delhi. The field trip aimed to broaden their horizons and spark curiosity about science and technology.

The center strives to provide quality education and holistic development opportunities to empower young minds and brighten their future.

It was their first time stepping into a science museum of this magnitude. Their eyes sparkled with excitement as they explored the exhibits and experimented with the interactive displays. The field trip not only provided them with exposure to a world beyond their immediate surroundings but also instilled a sense of wonder and ignited their passion for learning.

By Kim Hyo-jin

More young people should take part in efforts to promote unification of the two Koreas, according to Moon Hyun-jin, chairman of Washington-based Global Peace Foundation (GPF).

“Young people need to take the lead in the unification movement as it will bring direct opportunities for them,” Moon said in an interview with The Korea Times.

The 45-year-old civic group leader, based in Seattle, visited Seoul to give a speech at the GPF-hosted unification conference held on Oct. 9.

Moon, who was born in Korea but moved to the United States at the age of four, established the GPF in 2009 and initiated the civic-led movement for unification the following year.

Moon noted that young people are estranged from the idea of unification because they have been “misinformed” by their parents’ generation.

“My generation says unification would cost too much. But this is just an opinion, not a fact,” he said.

“They also have the wrong assumption that the South Korean economy will maintain its trajectory. But it’s not going to continue as it did over the last 30 years.

“Basically, they think unification is irrelevant to them,” he added.

Moon argues that for young people, the realities they face demand the opposite.

“In South Korea, it is next to impossible for innovative young people to have access to capital because of the structure that only favors a few chaebol firms.

“Though highly-educated, they also suffer from the high unemployment rate. Doesn’t that imply that this economy has fundamental flaws?” he said.

Moon believes unification can be a breakthrough for young people.

“The unification process can force society to tackle this archaic economic system.

“Because unless the South Korean economy becomes healthier, it will be very difficult to lead and absorb the North Korean economy,” he said, indicating that economic reform will be inevitable in preparation for unification.

“This is why unification is tremendously relevant for young people.”

Family legacy

For Moon, the unification movement runs through his family.

His great uncle was a prominent member of the Korean anti-colonial movement and helped draft the Independence Declaration in 1919. His father, the late leader of the Unification Church Moon Sun-myung, was engaged in North Korean business since he met North Korea’s founding leader Kim Il-sung in 1991.

Moon Sun-myung established the international company Mount Geumgang in 1994 and launched tours to the mountain in 2008. The following year, he established an inter-Korean joint automobile maker Pyeonghwa Motors.

Moon regards his father more as an activist than as the founder of a religion.

In a recently-published book, titled “Korean Dream: A Vision for a United Korea,” he mentioned, “Beyond the religious perception, my father saw unification of the Korean Peninsula as critical groundwork to realizing world peace.”

Following in father’s footstep, Moon has actively engaged in various unification movements over the last five years.

He organized an alliance of NGOs, Action for Korea United (AKU) in 2012 and mounted a campaign to encourage South Koreans to donate 1,000 won, equal to the cost of three meals for one North Korean. The AKU grew into the largest NGO for unification movement in South Korea.

This year, Moon-led GPF further reinstated its presence by producing a campaign song in a bid to raise awareness about unification among young people.

For the campaign, 1,100 civic activists, including people from the liberal and conservative camps, joined hands; the first time in the history of South Korean civic society which is divided due to ideological conflicts.

Leaders of rival parties_Rep. Kim Moo-sung of the Saenuri Party and Rep. Moon Jae-in of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy_also took part in the making of a song titled, “One Dream, One Korea,”.

The NGO leader stressed that civic society should take the lead in pushing for unification.

“How things work in a democratic society, it is civic-led. If there is any movement for change and transformation, it is bottom up, not top down,” he said. “The larger a civic movement is and the more that young people are at the front of it, the more politicians will follow.”

But overcoming ideological rivalry and having a unified vision inside South Korean society is a prerequisite to a successful approach toward unification issue, Moon noted.

Referring to the Sunshine policy of the Kim Dae-jung administration as an overall failure, he said, “It is because there was no comprehensive vision and strategy for engagement with the North on a national level.”

He advised the public to come out of the Cold War framework and build a common platform.

Change is now possible down the road, he added.

“The number of people taking part in the unification movement is growing exponentially,” he said, mentioning that AKU members grew from 300 to 750 in a year and is expected to be over 1,000 by the end of this year.

“If a person dreams a dream then it is a dream, but if everyone dreams the same dream, then it is a reality,” he said, quoting Ghengis Khan.

The music video opens with a soft piano melody, followed by the rich vocals of Younhasinging, “We were never really different. Do not forget that fact.”

Another part of the video features a brief scene of two elderly Korean men in suits singing, “Let’s remember once more . . . .” above the background harmony of the 20 plus popular singers and actors.

Those few seconds definitely stand out – but so does the story behind the frame.

The two men are representatives of opposition parties in Korea, Kim Musong from the Saenuri Party (New Frontier Party-NFP) and Moon JaeIn from the New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD). The relationship between the conservative Saenuri party and the liberal NPAD has been tumultuous. The scene in the One Dream One Korea music video captures a significant coming together of opposing parties for a greater cause–uniting the Korean people together for one dream.

At the recording studio, Rep Musong Kim expressed, “Unification is the true way for a bright recovery.” Rep Jaein Moon said “A unified Korea will start with economic unification.”

Also featured in the video is Minister of Unification Yongpyo Hong, who said “Our wish is to have one Korea.”

The song is raising awareness of more than just the division between North and South Korea as it touches upon the many divides between Korean people–between Koreans in the homeland and the diaspora, amid staunch regionalism, and among political parties that have a heated history of competition that include physical confrontations in the National Assembly.

The “One Dream One Korea” song is part of The New Era of Unification Song Campaign organized by 1100 civic Korean and international organizations. The song seeks to raise awareness and encourage action for Korean unification from all ages, especially youth.

The song will be the centerpiece at the 1 K Concert to be held at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on October 9, 2015.

Bahrain is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Persian Gulf, located over seven thousand miles from the Korean peninsula. There a humble middle-aged Korean man walks the streets each morning as the sun rises, picking up trash.

His reason? Simply because he loves the place he lives. Garbage bothers him. It is a nuisance, creating an unhealthy environment, so he picks it up. He calls himself “the Boss of Cleaning” you would never guess he also happens to be a successful millionaire investor, who has been living in and beautifying the Arab island nation for over a decade.

Forty years ago the Arab Nations were the third most popular destination for Koreans looking for work in the areas of construction and infrastructure, with over a million emigrants. Recent numbers of Koreans living in the area has dropped significantly, but they are still present in all of the Middle Eastern countries.

In the video interview of the “Boss of Clean”, one can see the impact one person can have on others. The simple actions of picking up garbage inspired a young camera crew to catch Mr. Yu in action. The fact that he was not native to Bahrain caused deep self-reflection on the way they lived their own lives. They praised him as an example of “simplicity, modesty and a beautiful presence” and warmly thanked him for being a true role model for the youth.

No matter who we are or where we live, if each one of us really cared about our own neighborhood and took a few minutes to help where it is needed, the world we are living in would indeed be that much cleaner, brighter and happier for everyone.

The Global Peace Foundation has been pioneering a grass-roots movement for Korean reunification since it first began work in 2009. Since then, the Global Peace Foundation has joined over 400 NGOs to create Action for Korea United, a broad-based coalition of civil society united to support Korean reunification.

Among the initiatives started by the Global Peace Foundation and its partners are some specifically targeting youth engagement and leadership.

During his visits to Korea, Dr. Hyun Jin Moon, founder of the Global Peace Foundation, called on Korean youth to become owners of the “Korean Dream.” He cited examples when the optimism and passion of youth connected to a big dream drove transformative social movements, saying that a movement for Korean Unification would need the same youthful energy and idealism.

“Raising a Unification Generation,” has become the tagline of the youth-centered activities of Global Peace Foundation-Korea and Action for Korea United. Young Koreans and international volunteers have sparked awareness efforts, donation drives, and pledge campaigns to stimulate interest in the issue of unification.

Since then, ongoing projects have been developed to continue to reach out and stimulate the youth of Korea. The Unification Project Competition, now engages university to elementary students in a competition to propose projects that promote awareness, education and action for Korean unification. A “school” that “Searches for Unification” is teaching the vision, principles and values that support reunification, and a university-based Unification Supporters Corps is growing across the nation.

The Global Peace Foundation’s continued investment in raising a “Unification Generation” was recognized at the end of 2014. GPF-Korea President In Taek Seo represented GPF-Korea to receive the Grand Prize in the Youth Leadership Category at the 12th Annual Korean Youth Award ceremony hosted by the Korean Youth Newspaper. The ceremony was held December 20 at the Baekbeom Memorial in Seoul. The annual awards are sponsored by the Republic of Korea National Assembly, the Ministry of Unification, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, NGOs, and the Korean Scout League.

Dr. Hyun Jin Moon urged Nigeria to become a leader of moral and innovative leadership in Africa. (Photo Credit: NewsIs)Your excellencies, distinguished participants, ladies and gentlemen:It is a great honor to join with you here today in Abuja for this very important conference on “Moral and Innovative Leadership: Building Sustainable Peace for a Prosperous Future.”

This is a theme of the greatest significance for this nation of Nigeria, the region of West Africa and the entire continent of Africa as we stand at this moment of historic transition. That is why addressing the fundamental issues of a new leadership paradigm to propel this nation forward and all of Africa, is so important in the history of not just Nigeria but this entire continent.

I would like to express my special appreciation to His Excellency President Goodluck Jonathan for contributing his input and support of this initiative. Among the many distinguished participants who are here with us today, I would like to give special recognition to our illustrious friend and many ways mentor, Sir James Mancham, founding president of Seychelles and former President Amani Karume of Zanzibar for launching the African Presidential Leadership Mission on Peacebuilding; I would also especially like to give my thanks to the chairman of GPF Africa, my very good friends and someone who constantly keeps me on my toes, Dr. Manu Chandaria of Comcraft Chairman and my good friend from the United Nations Dr. Markendey Rai, both of whom are members of GPF’s Global Leadership Council. Could you please give them a round of applause.

Particular recognition should be given to the many religious leaders and traditional rulers who have contributed to the One Family Under God campaign of peacebuilding here in Nigeria with GPF including Archbishop Cardinal John Onaiyekan, I hope I’m saying that right, representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto, Bishop Sunday Onouha, Reverend John Hayab and Sheik Maraya of Kaduna, among many, many others. Please forgive me if I did not pronounce your name correctly.

This conference has been organized by the Global Peace Foundation in partnership with the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution. However, many other people and organizations have joined with us, together as owners of this cause and worked tirelessly to make this conference, and the subsequent “One Family under God” campaign, a resounding success. Please give them all a round of applause.

I particularly want to appreciate the Nigerian Inter-Faith Action Association and all the other faith leaders engaged in this work. We would not be here today if it was not for their sincere devotion and ownership over this powerful vision. Could we give them all a round of applause?

Ladies and Gentlemen, Africa today stands atop a new pinnacle with the potential of climbing even higher in its very near future. Dramatic new possibilities are opening up. The world is beginning to see the potential of Africa. The continent as a whole is growing faster than any other region in the world with a $2 trillion economy.

By 2035 the African workforce will be larger than that of China’s.The era of military strongmen, coup détats and civil unrest seems to be in the decline, despite the often-jaded coverage of this region by the international press corps.

But what’s even more promising is the possibility of stability, peace and prosperity through the rise of constitutional democratic regimes, a process that is engaging more and more Africans in actively shaping the futures of their nations and the continent as a whole.

Dr. Hyun Jin and Dr. Jun Sook Moon with Mrs. Aruna and Dr. Manu Chandaria and Chesuwa Kaunda at the opening plenary of the Global Peace Leadership Conference Abuja 2013.
These are significant developments since they mark a period of African self-determination far removed from the traditional paternalism of the developed world, that dominated the relationship between the West and this continent for the last half century.

As a Korean who witnessed my birth-nation’s rise in 60 short years to become one of the largest, leading economies through its self-reliance movement, I am confidently optimistic about the changes that are happening in Africa and especially here in Nigeria.

Within Africa, Nigeria is positioned to be a major leader. You have the most populous nation with a highly educated elite and tremendous natural resources. You also have a reputation as a very spiritual people.

In fact, Nigeria’s most valuable resource is not its resources but its great people. Two of the great faith traditions, Christianity and Islam, are represented here in almost equal numbers and you have a tradition of cooperation between the faiths that could offer a lesson to the world, despite your current challenges.

However, we recognize all too clearly that the prospect for peace and progress faces serious obstacles. The two major threats are conflict – between ethnic groups, and increasingly from extremists fueled by distorted and radical understandings of their faith traditions – and corruption.

In Nigeria you have experienced conflict of both sorts, through the violence of Boko Haram, and in the Delta region over the distribution of wealth from oil resources. Corruption remains a major drain on the economy and prevents the great wealth generated by Nigeria’s natural resources from benefiting the Nigerian people and Nigerian society as a whole.

The time is ripe for Africans to take responsibility for shaping your own destiny. That means exercising true leadership. True leadership does not mean wielding power for its own sake.

True leadership is moral and innovative leadership whose power lies in the moral authority rooted in core universal principles and shared moral values. We have witnessed in the past century, compelling examples such leadership in the lives of people like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela. Each of them overcame great material forces arrayed against them, through the power and the truth of the universal principles and values to which they gave voice.

Moral leadership is more precious for the future of a nation than gold, diamonds and oil, under the soil. It is guided by a common vision that reflects the most fundamental human aspirations, conforms to the universal spiritual principles that govern human life, and is expressed in shared moral values that can ultimately form a global ethic.

That vision is the simple yet profound idea that all people, regardless of race, nationality, religion, or culture, are members of One Family under God.

This proposition has implicit within it certain fundamental principles.

First, each human being has unique value and dignity from the Creator and should be treated accordingly. Second, since we share a common Source or Origin, therefore, in the words of the American Declaration of Independence, “all men are created equal and are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights.”

These rights originate with the Creator and cannot be removed or denied by any government or other human institution. Third, as members of one family sharing a common origin, we also share a common responsibility for one another and for the fate of our common destinies.

Within this framework of moral leadership, innovation can take place. The innovative leader develops concrete approaches to critical issues through the lens of this common spiritual vision rooted in universal principles and shared moral values, drawing upon human beings’ natural creativity.

I have always felt a great affinity for Africa and African people because of the great potential I see here. More and more experts are pointing out bright economic prospects, but the potential I see that can be truly transformative force on this continent is spiritual.

When I look at all of you gathered here for this conference and hear about the work you are doing, I see many ‘owners’ who are ready to take responsibility for the future of this nation of Nigeria. I was inspired to learn that religious leaders and traditional rulers here have grasped the power of a compelling vision and on your own initiative launched the One Family under God campaign here, in partnership with GPF.

Through religious and traditional leaders, such as the Emir of Abuja, the One Family under God message is being spread to communities here in Nigeria. There it serves as a spiritual antidote to the Boko Haram message of domination, division, and conflict.

Through this work, Nigeria, with the even balance of Christian and Muslim in your population, is uniquely positioned to create a model of interfaith cooperation that will have global impact in mitigating the effects of religious radicalism.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am a man of faith and I believe that God’s Providence is calling faith leaders to be the peacemakers in this age.The threat of religious extremism cannot be resolved by political or economic solutions alone. A true and lasting resolution must be rooted in faith and expressed through practical spirituality.

To that end, faith leaders must step beyond the confines of their own sectarian or denominational traditions, and act together as true spiritual leaders, representing God’s hope for the world, not just the interests of a particular religion.

Such a movement will raise humanity to a new level of understanding of the ways of peace and reconciliation, establishing new norms that become the foundation of a new global ethic.Nigeria stands on the frontline of the dangerous division within the Abrahamic tradition, between Islam and Christianity. Abraham was blessed and his descendants after him, because of his faith and devotion in one God.

How ironic that today many of the heirs of that tradition, whether it be with the Christian or Muslim, who accuse each other of worshiping different gods.People of faith need to step back and reflect deeply on the true meaning of the original message taught by their founders.

None of the great faith traditions teaches division, domination, and conflict, though all of them have been distorted to promote such things at times. Jesus taught, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” What higher honor could there be than that? In Islam, the very words of greeting, “As salamu alykum,” mean “peace be upon you,” and the word “Islam” itself has its roots in words meaning peace, and wholeness.

We who inherit traditions must be true to the ideal of peace under God expressed at the heart of their teachings, heal division, and bring the family of Abraham to become one.The challenge is global in scope as Christianity and Islam face each other in tense and sometimes violent relationships in many different parts of the world.

That is why GPF has made the promotion of cooperation among faiths the first of our three key focus areas for promoting global peace. We have worked to bring Christian and Muslim communities to cooperate together in conflict areas such as Mindanao of the Philippines.

Next month in Malaysia, a country of diverse faiths, including Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism, the annual Global Peace Convention will highlight the importance of interfaith cooperation and establish a platform for future work in the Middle East.

The problem of divisions among faith traditions is great and extends beyond the Abrahamic tradition. Since the end of the Cold War and its two blocs of competing ideology, the global geopolitical dynamic has been reconfigured by the power of politicized and radicalized versions of the great faith traditions.

The threat that this represents is extreme and can only be countered by true spiritual leaders, true men and women of God, stepping beyond the boundaries of their own traditions, to work in common cause with those of other faith traditions, while each drawing on the deep strength and original vision of their own tradition.

This is truly carrying out the work of God, creating a world where all live as members of One Family under God, that can find peace, security and prosperity. Such a movement will transform Nigeria, and its effects will ripple out across the region, throughout the continent, into the Middle East, until it ultimately encompasses the world.

Within Nigeria itself, the impact of a powerfully active movement of cooperation among faiths will not only erode the influence of religious radicalism, but will also address ethnic and tribal divisions. It can also be a powerful force against corruption, by speaking out for the highest standards of public service and promoting and protecting those ready to uphold them.

Such a faith movement can also tackle poverty, health, education, and other social needs, through initiatives such as the distribution of mosquito nets, acting as non-governmental social agencies. This work will be more effective through drawing on the power of the traditional model of the extended family. Such families, through mutual support, provide a social safety net independent of government. This is in stark contrast to the nuclear family models predominant in developed nations, whose deficits, psychologically, socially, and fiscally are now becoming clear as large numbers of older people rely on underfunded government programs to provide for the elderly.

More important, though, than a social safety net, the extended family provides an ethical and spiritual safety net, nurturing and transmitting cultural tradition and moral standards. This is the core of strong communities that are the building blocks of a healthy society and strong nation.

That is why the strengthening of families and communities is GPF’s second major focus area. The Global Peace Foundation is a young movement, but from the beginning I have invested much of our effort into Africa because of the hope I see there.

Dr. Manu Chandaria presents Dr. Moon with the UN Award given to GPF Kenya in recognition for its work with sustainable peace and youth empowerment.

We began our work in Kenya, in the wake of the terrible 2008 post-election violence, holding public festivals and sponsoring grassroots projects to promote peace and reconciliation. Here in Nigeria I am proud to announce the launch of two projects, the Character and Creativity Initiative (CCI), and the All Lights Village Project, along with the Africa Peace Service Corps.

The large youth populations in Africa will shape the future of their countries for better or worse. CCI will inculcate the moral outlook and the skills needed for them to succeed, and Nigeria can become a pioneer in this movement for all of Africa.

CCI’s approach is innovative because it engages the school and local community in developing a culture that promotes moral and innovative leadership in practical ways. In Kenya, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education there are plans to extend CCI throughout all of Kenyan schools.

The prestigious national think-tank, KIPPRA, reviewed the progress of CCI schools over the past two years and found major improvements in school culture and performance. As a result, the Ministry of Education, has now made character development part of the assessment of successful school performance.

The All Lights Village project, launched in Asia, is now coming to Nigeria. All Lights is pioneering a comprehensive approach to development in rural communities. It begins with bringing solar lamps to villages without electrification. But that is just the starting point for ongoing initiatives that promote the “light” of education, the empowerment of social entrepreneurial capacity-building, and an enduring commitment of community development.

We also have distinguished leaders from the political sphere here with us ready to promote moral and innovative leadership. I would like to congratulate those heads of state, former and present, who are joining together to launch the Africa Leadership Mission on Peacebuilding, Youth Leadership, and Service, here at this conference.

The Leadership Mission will engage former heads of state and research institutions and is modeled on the Latin American Presidential Mission launched last year during the Global Peace Convention at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta.

Through the power of moral and innovative leadership rooted in the unifying vision of One Family under God, Nigeria can rise above its present challenges.

Your faith leaders are already working together, in partnership with traditional leaders. Through uniting and cooperating around this powerful moral vision you can give direction and hope to the Nigerian people and hold your political leaders to account.

Nigeria’s faith leaders can show how it is possible for different traditions to unite around shared principles and values to resolve conflict and secure peace. In so doing you will be creating a great benefit for Africa and for the world, by demonstrating a model that others can emulate.

If you can seize the vision of One Family under God and make it into a reality; if the rising generation of young leaders can inherit and practice this vision, then the hope for Nigeria will be bright. Your country can become a light and a true leader in the new emerging Africa, an example and inspiration for other nations to follow.

I urge you to join with me and unite together in pursuit of this great cause so that Nigeria can realize its true destiny.

Thank you and may God bless you and your families

Summer is well underway and the Global Peace Foundation, Global Peace Youth Corps and affiliate organizations like Service for Peace are sending young volunteers overseas.

Service brings out the best in young people:

their ability to see beyond long-standing divisions,

their innovation,

their hope

and most of all, their power to dream.

In 2010, Dr. Moon challenged Korean youth, “What will your generation do with your capacity to dream? Will you dream a small dream or will you dream the greatest dream of all?” Serving abroad is the perfect way to expand one’s capacity to dream.

Meet, Gundong Lee, featured on Chosun.com in 2011. At the time, he was 28. He initially came to Nepal as an international volunteer with Service for Peace Korea. He told Chosun, “The Nepalese staff thought I was too meddling, especially because they thought I would not stay here forever.” Contrary to the Nepalese staff’s assumption, he stayed and become project director of the Children’s Center and Dream Catcher Library in Sarlahi, a district about 12 hours from Kathmandu.

In 2012, Nepal ranked 157 out of 186 nations in the UN Human Development Index. According to Hon. Ram Hari Joshy, former Secretary of Education and Secretary of Tourism of Nepal, the key to development is “Education…Unless people change, this world will not get any better.”

The Service for Peace projects in Sharili focus on education. Behind book covers, and within the warm shelter of the Children’s Center, dreams are taking flight.

The Dream Catcher Library houses 6,000 books and a computer lab that offers computer classes. After school, children and college students gather at the library to study and read. Local volunteers support a mobile library system that circulates the books by bicycle and car to families in remote areas. A women’s literacy program also operates from the Dream Catcher Library. To date, hundreds of women have learned to read and write through the program.

The Children’s Center offers a haven for orphans of the 14 year Nepali civil-war. The brunt of violence passed through the Sharili region leaving many children parentless and homeless. Chosun.com wrote, “The children of the center call Gundong Lee “Appa” or dad in Korean.” He come as a foreign volunteer, but remained to heal and raise his adopted Nepalese children. Today, international volunteers frequently join local program coordinators for months at a time to care for the orphans. They forever remain a part of the Children Center’s growing extended family.

Experiences like Gundong Lee’s, forge deep bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood with communities abroad. Young volunteers are placed on the job and immediately expected to find common goals while working and learning with people who speak different languages and come from different cultures, religions and lives. What manifests is the dream that pulses through every human vein.

The world’s current and future leaders dreams are expanded to “the greatest dream of all”.
