Moon
Paraguay, Global Peace Convention 2014

In November 2024, Paraguay hosted the National Forum “Towards an Inclusive Development of Indigenous Peoples,” an important gathering focused on fostering unity and cooperation across all sectors of society. Global Peace Foundation partnered with Global Peace Women (GPW) to organize the event, bringing together diverse voices from across the country to celebrate the shared mission of inclusion, respect, and unity for Paraguay’s indigenous communities.

The forum was a powerful example of how collaboration between government officials, indigenous leaders, international organizations, and civil society can help strengthen national unity. The gathering underscored the importance of working as one family under God to create a society where all people, regardless of their background, are valued and given opportunities to thrive. The Vice Minister of Social Development and President of GPW Paraguay shared that the forum raised awareness about the reality of the country’s Indigenous peoples, especially women, and was a call to Paraguayan society to work together towards achieving ‘Buen Vivir’ (Good Living) for all.

The event began with a culturally rich ceremony led by the Guaraní women’s group Zweitausendein, which highlighted the deep connection between indigenous peoples and the land they call home. As a member of the group shared, “Through our songs, we bring a blessing to life, to women, to the land that sustains us.” Their traditional songs and dances illustrated the harmony between human life and nature—a reminder that we are all connected as one family.

A Nobel Peace Prize laureate addressed the forum virtually and praised Paraguay for placing Indigenous issues at the forefront of national discourse. She emphasized that true change requires a fair and balanced relationship with justice, ensuring that Indigenous peoples are recognized and respected in all areas of society. Her message of unity echoed the theme of the forum, highlighting the need for collective action and shared responsibility in addressing Indigenous rights.

A major focus of the forum was the empowerment of Indigenous women, who are central to community life and development. Paraguay’s Ministry of Women shared its progress in reducing gender-based violence and promoting Indigenous women in leadership roles. The Minister of Women emphasized the importance of working closely with Indigenous communities to create tailored solutions that support women in their roles as pillars of their families and communities. She stated that together, they were training public servants to address violence against Indigenous women with an intercultural perspective, illustrating how respect for cultural diversity can foster stronger, more inclusive policies.

The Ministry of Education and Science highlighted efforts to improve educational opportunities for Indigenous children and combat high illiteracy rates. In parallel, the Ministry of Health is working to integrate Indigenous health practices into the national healthcare system, ensuring all citizens, no matter their heritage, have access to the care they need in a way that honors their cultural traditions.

A significant moment of the forum was the unveiling of the National Plan for Indigenous Peoples, a policy framework developed by Indigenous communities themselves. This plan reflects Paraguay’s commitment to ensuring that Indigenous peoples have equal access to resources, education, and healthcare, while also preserving the cultural richness of the nation’s 19 indigenous groups. The plan serves as a reminder that, as one family under God, all citizens deserve to live in dignity, with opportunities to grow and flourish.

The Global Peace Foundation and Global Peace Women continue to promote harmony, reconciliation, and inclusive development, with a special focus on empowering women in leadership and community roles. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, these organizations embody the vision of a peaceful, united world—one where all people, regardless of their background, work together in mutual respect to build a better future. As Paraguay moves forward on the path to ‘Buen Vivir,’ the forum served as a powerful reminder of the importance of collective action and sustained commitment to the idea of “One Family Under God,” united in our shared mission for peace and prosperity.

“When we practice a lifestyle of service, truly living for others, we exemplify the highest ideals of human character.”

Dr. Hyun Jin P. Moon (Global Peace Convention, Philippines, 2009)

The holiday season is often seen as a time for reflection, gratitude, and giving. It’s a time when communities come together, whether through family gatherings, charity events, or volunteer work. Yet, it’s also a moment to reflect on something deeper: the role that service plays in building peace around the world.

One inspiring example of this principle in action during this last holiday season comes from Candelaria, Quezon, where the Global Peace Foundation Philippines (GPF Philippines) and local partners launched an impactful initiative that not only lit up homes but also brightened the futures of many residents.

Light as a Symbol of Hope and Innovation

In a heartwarming display of community service, GPF Philippines handed over 100 solar lanterns and 10 solar street lights to the residents of Candelaria as part of the All-Lights Village initiative. This project, which serves as both a Christmas gift and a year-round solution to rural electrification, underscores the significance of moral leadership and innovative thinking in addressing some of the world’s most persistent challenges.

The project’s impact extends beyond its practical benefits. Solar-powered lanterns and streetlights don’t just provide light; they offer hope and security, transforming the way communities live and thrive. This act of service represents the powerful intersection of sustainability, renewable energy, and social impact—all essential elements of a brighter, more equitable future.

Developing Moral Leadership Through Service

At the heart of every service project lies the opportunity for moral leadership. Leaders in the project understand that true leadership goes beyond authority or decision-making—it is about creating positive change and inspiring others to act with compassion and responsibility. The executive director of GPF Philippines talked about the symbolic role of light—representing hope, unity, and progress—and highlighted how service can lead to transformative leadership.

Such leadership is about much more than solving immediate problems. It’s about cultivating values like integrity, compassion, and selflessness. By actively engaging in service, leaders demonstrate their commitment to improving the well-being of others, which in turn fosters a culture of empathy and collaboration. Whether it’s through giving resources, time, or expertise, leaders who embrace service as a core tenet of their mission create ripple effects of positive change.

Innovative Solutions to Real-World Problems

The All-Lights Village initiative doesn’t just address an immediate need for light; it embodies an innovative approach to tackling long-term issues. In rural areas like Candelaria, access to reliable electricity is often limited. Solar-powered lanterns and streetlights are a sustainable solution that enhances safety and mobility and reduces dependency on conventional energy sources.

This is where the power of innovation intersects with moral leadership. By harnessing renewable energy to provide light, this initiative is helping to break the cycle of poverty while also addressing environmental concerns. It showcases how out-of-the-box thinking—in this case, solar technology—can offer practical, scalable solutions to global challenges like rural electrification and climate change.

The program’s success is due, in large part, to the collaborative efforts of multiple partners. A leader of a local organization eloquently captured the essence of this partnership by highlighting how collective action can result in lasting change. “True progress begins when we come together, with compassion and commitment, to light the way for others,” she said. This statement exemplifies the power of community-based solutions, where each partner brings unique strengths to the table for the greater good.

The Role of Service in Building Stronger Communities

The All-Lights Village initiative is a reminder that sustainable development requires more than just financial investment or technology. It requires a commitment to the well-being of others and an acknowledgment that progress is not just about improving infrastructure—it’s about improving lives. As GPF Philippines continues to lead such initiatives, they reaffirm their commitment to fostering self-reliant and resilient communities, guided by the principle of “living for the greater good.”

This concept of service-driven leadership is crucial in the 21st century, where challenges like environmental sustainability, poverty, and inequality continue to test our collective ability to innovate and collaborate. It is through service—whether it’s bringing light to a rural community, helping those in need, or offering new solutions to persistent problems—that we unlock the true potential of leadership and innovation.

Conclusion: Leading by Example

The Global Peace Foundation’s initiative in Candelaria exemplifies the profound impact of service in moral leadership and innovative solutions. It serves as a powerful reminder that true leadership doesn’t reside only in boardrooms or decision-making offices. Sometimes, it’s in the simple, everyday acts of service that leaders show the world what it means to care, innovate, and build a brighter future for all.

As we face the world’s most pressing challenges, let us take inspiration from these acts of giving. Let us embrace service as a core value in leadership, always seeking new and better ways to solve problems and uplift communities. When we lead with compassion and a commitment to the greater good, we not only solve problems—we ignite the light of hope that can guide others toward a brighter, more sustainable future.

Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon

Global Peace Convention 2021

Environmental stewardship underscores the responsibility we all share in caring for the natural world and ensuring its long-term health. At the heart of this celebration was the collective commitment to conservation, with a focus on practical actions that will make a real difference in Kenya’s fight against environmental degradation.

Global Peace Foundation Kenya, alongside key partners, recently celebrated the 2nd Mazingira Day, a day dedicated to environmental awareness and action, at Starehe Girls Centre. This event was a powerful demonstration of environmental stewardship, as it aimed to address the critical challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution while promoting sustainable practices that can safeguard our planet’s future.

A Collaborative Commitment to Sustainability

Speakers highlighted the community’s commitment to supporting the national tree-growing strategy. By actively participating in efforts to plant trees and promote sustainability, the Starehe Girls Centre is instilling the values of environmental responsibility in its students, encouraging them to become future stewards of the environment.

A representative from KCB Bank also demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, announcing its goal of planting 1,500 trees at its branches by 2027, with a broader vision to plant 1 million trees annually. This initiative not only contributes to the ongoing national tree-growing campaign but also sets a model for other corporations to integrate environmental stewardship into their business practices.

Empowering Communities to Protect the Environment

Representatives from Global Peace Foundation Kenya highlighted the collaborative efforts that have allowed them to establish over 15 tree nurseries across 11 counties, which have produced over 2 million trees to date. These nurseries, with the capacity to grow 100,000 trees each, are a testament to the power of grassroots efforts in achieving large-scale environmental goals. Through such initiatives, communities are not only being empowered to take ownership of their environment but are also contributing directly to Kenya’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

Taking Action: Planting 150 Trees

The event concluded with a hands-on demonstration of environmental stewardship—planting 150 trees at Starehe Girls Centre. This symbolic act was a reminder that environmental conservation requires both advocacy and action. Each tree planted represents a commitment to the future, helping to restore ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions, and promote biodiversity.

Moving Forward: Fostering a Culture of Environmental Stewardship

As Kenya continues to face environmental challenges, collective action is essential. The 2nd Mazingira Day was a powerful reminder that environmental stewardship is not just the responsibility of one organization or sector—it requires a broad and inclusive approach. By working together—across communities, businesses, schools, and government—we can protect and restore our environment for future generations.

The efforts seen at Mazingira Day serve as an example of how environmental stewardship can be woven into the fabric of everyday life. From the leadership of organizations like KCB Bank and Starehe Girls Centre to the grassroots efforts of local communities, every action counts. With sustained commitment and collaboration, Kenya can meet its ambitious environmental goals, ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for all.

Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon
Global Youth Summit Philippines

Youth leadership development plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of nations, particularly in countries like Tanzania, India, Mongolia, and Nigeria, where large youth populations face significant socio-economic challenges. These challenges, if not addressed, can lead to increased unemployment, social unrest, and poverty. However, with the right initiatives, young people can become a driving force for economic growth, peacebuilding, and social cohesion. The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) has recognized the importance of empowering youth through moral and innovative leadership training, entrepreneurial development, and social engagement. Their programs across these countries aim to nurture youth into proactive leaders committed to positive societal transformation.

The following is a summary of recent activities of the Global Peace Foundation and its values-based approach to peacebuilding.

Tanzania’s Youth Bulge: Opportunities and Challenges

Tanzania, as with many developing nations, faces a “youth bulge,” with nearly one-third of the population under the age of 35, according to the 2022 national census. This demographic represents both significant potential and daunting challenges. On one hand, young people can drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic dynamism. On the other, they place immense pressure on the country’s infrastructure, education systems, and healthcare services.

Key challenges faced by Tanzanian youth include income insecurity, where few graduates secure formal sector jobs, and poor education quality, particularly in rural areas. Many young people drop out of school due to factors like poverty, early marriages, and limited opportunities. Additionally, health issues, such as mental health problems, malaria, and reproductive health challenges, are rampant, with limited access to treatment.

Social problems such as gender-based violence, child marriages, and teenage pregnancies further exacerbate these challenges, leading to increased poverty, rising crime rates, and political apathy among the youth. One critical issue is the underrepresentation of youth in decision-making roles at both the national and local levels, which hinders effective policy development and perpetuates a cycle of disempowerment.

To address these issues, GPF Tanzania has initiated programs to empower youth with the tools they need for personal and professional growth. In 2024, GPF organized an event on International Youth Day in Mtwara, focusing on the role of youth in peacebuilding and digital technology for economic empowerment. The event, which attracted over 1,500 youth participants, underscored the importance of digital literacy and responsible technology use in fostering economic growth, particularly in areas like agriculture, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and artificial intelligence (AI).

While technology presents vast opportunities for economic development, it also carries risks like cyberbullying and misinformation, which can disrupt communities. GPF’s goal is to help Tanzanian youth harness the power of digital tools to advance peace and social change while promoting responsible use and critical thinking.

Peacebuilding and Leadership in India and Beyond: The Global Peace Foundation’s Approach

On a broader scale, GPF is deeply invested in peacebuilding and leadership development for youth, aiming to create a generation of leaders committed to unity, peace, and sustainable development. An example of this is the Peacebuilding Leadership Training workshop held in September 2024. The workshop brought together approximately 100 students from diverse fields, including nursing, business, and medical sciences, to explore the role of youth in peacebuilding.

The training focused on developing leadership skills rooted in empathy, active listening, and interfaith cooperation. The chairman of GPF India inspired participants by discussing the crucial role of youth in fostering peace and the concept of a “peace army” envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi. The workshop included meditation, interfaith dialogue, and community service, encouraging students to integrate these values into their professional and personal lives.

One key outcome of the workshop was the launch of Youth Peace Clubs, designed to keep participants engaged in ongoing peacebuilding activities. The event emphasized the need for young people to be proactive in addressing global challenges such as conflict, inequality, and climate change.

Youth Empowerment Through Entrepreneurship: NIYED Program in Nigeria

Entrepreneurship is another essential avenue for youth empowerment, particularly in addressing unemployment and underemployment—two critical challenges faced by young people in many countries. In Nigeria, where a large percentage of youth struggle to find meaningful employment, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) has partnered with organizations like Besouro Social Development Agency to run the Nigerian Youths Entrepreneurship for Development (NIYED) program.

Launched in July 2024, the NIYED program is a three-month virtual training initiative aimed at young Nigerians aged 18-30 who have either started a business or have an idea for one. The program provides theoretical content and practical skills across ten training sessions, focusing on areas like business planning, branding, marketing, and the use of digital tools for business development. The program also emphasizes mentorship and community service, encouraging participants to integrate social responsibility into their entrepreneurial ventures.

More than 60 young Nigerians from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds participated in the first phase of the program, which culminated in the creation of actionable business plans. A key element of the program was the one-on-one mentorship, which helped participants navigate the challenges of starting and growing businesses.

Conclusion: A Vision for Global Peace and Prosperity

The youth in Tanzania, India, Mongolia, and Nigeria represent a vast and untapped reservoir of potential. With the right investments in education, technology, peacebuilding, and entrepreneurship, they can become powerful agents of change, driving not only economic growth but also social cohesion and global peace.

Initiatives like GPF’s programs in these countries are crucial in equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to navigate the complexities of the modern world. By promoting leadership, entrepreneurship, and community service, these programs are laying the groundwork for a more peaceful, prosperous, and connected future, where young people from all backgrounds can work together for the common good and build One Family under God. GPF’s work shows that empowering youth isn’t just about teaching them how to succeed—it’s about inspiring them to lead with compassion, integrity, and a commitment to a better world.

Thus, the home is the first, most natural place to begin our work to realize this dream of peace and mutual prosperity.”

Dr. Junsook Moon
Global Peace Leadership Conference Africa 2024

In recent months, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria, in partnership with Global Peace Women (GPW) Nigeria and local organizations, has spearheaded several significant initiatives aimed at fostering peace, empowering women, and enhancing community cohesion across Kaduna State. These events emphasize the crucial role of women as peacebuilders, leaders, and agents of change, particularly within the family unit. The workshops and programs have addressed themes of nonviolent communication, economic empowerment, and family-focused peace advocacy, with the overarching goal of nurturing peaceful, resilient communities.

1. Nonviolent Communication and Leadership Skills for Women and Youth

In September 2024, GPF Nigeria was a main partner in organizing a two-day capacity-building workshop for women and youth leaders in the Hayin Banki community. The workshop, themed “Nonviolent Communication and Leadership Skills,” sought to equip participants with essential tools for conflict resolution and responsible leadership. This initiative aligned with the core mantra of GPW Nigeria, “Peace Begins in the Home,” encouraging participants to adopt nonviolent communication as a strategy for resolving disputes and fostering peace within families and communities.

Speakers delivered inspiring talks on the pivotal role women play in peacebuilding, building strong family foundations, instilling integrity in children, and prioritizing self-care.

Participants applied the lessons on nonviolent communication during the workshop itself. One woman successfully de-escalated a potential altercation between local youth, using the techniques she had learned. This demonstrated the immediate applicability of the skills being taught and the transformative impact they had on individuals and their communities.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among women leaders in the community, who left committed to implementing the principles of peacebuilding within their homes and local environments.

2. Economic Empowerment for Women with Disabilities

In October 2024, GPF Nigeria and GPW Nigeria organized a groundbreaking event aimed at empowering women with disabilities in Kaduna State. Held at Arewa House, the economic empowerment program provided over 90 women with disabilities from diverse backgrounds the tools to become more financially independent. The initiative focused on financial literacy, small business resources, and combating societal stigmatization. The goal was to support these women in overcoming barriers to economic participation and create opportunities for self-reliance.

The country director of GPF Nigeria opened the event by emphasizing the importance of empowering women with disabilities, stating that such empowerment was essential for achieving independence and dignity. Speakers highlighted the theme of peacebuilding, urging the women to use their voices against violence and contribute to fostering peaceful communities.

The impact of the program was evident in the heartfelt testimonies of participants. Women expressed their gratitude for the tangible support they received, which they believed would improve their livelihoods. A visually impaired participant was especially thankful for both the financial aid and the business knowledge imparted, which would help her transition from begging to running a small business.

This initiative focused on immediate empowerment and called for long-term structural changes to support people with disabilities. GPF Nigeria representatives urged the government and civil society organizations to prioritize the needs of this marginalized group, combat dehumanization, and foster inclusive environments where everyone could thrive.

3. Empowering Families for Community Peace Advocacy

Another key event gathered over 120 women from various ethnic and religious backgrounds gathered at the Epitome Hotel Event Centre in Barnawa, Kaduna. This one-day event, organized by GPW Nigeria in collaboration with GPF Nigeria, was titled “Empowering Families for Community Peace Advocacy” and focused on strengthening families as the foundation for peaceful communities.

The program reinforced the idea that peace begins in the home, a theme central to GPW Nigeria’s mission. Distinguished speakers emphasized the importance of women’s leadership in peace advocacy, urging women to take up their roles as peacebuilders and active participants in creating harmonious homes that would, in turn, contribute to societal peace.

The event also included practical workshops where participants developed action plans to continue peace advocacy in their communities. These plans included activities like interfaith visitations, girl-child empowerment initiatives, and peace campaigns in places of worship. The women left the event motivated and committed to carrying the message of peace forward, confident in their ability to nurture peaceful environments both within their families and communities.

Conclusion: A Movement for Lasting Change

Through these initiatives, GPF Nigeria and GPW Nigeria have made significant strides in empowering women to be leaders in peacebuilding and societal development. The capacity-building workshops, economic empowerment programs, and family-focused peace advocacy events all highlight the importance of equipping women with the skills, resources, and support they need to shape more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient communities.

The collaborations between these organizations and local groups serve as powerful examples of how grassroots movements can foster meaningful, sustainable change. By investing in women and promoting nonviolent communication, economic empowerment, and family cohesion, GPF Nigeria and GPW Nigeria are not only addressing immediate challenges but also contributing to long-term peacebuilding efforts in Kaduna State and beyond.

These initiatives display a broader movement to promote peace, inclusivity, and resilience across Nigeria. As more women take on leadership roles and advocate for peaceful, empowered communities, the vision of a more peaceful and prosperous society becomes increasingly achievable.

Seeing the tremendous need for sustainable development in Nepal’s largest city, Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nepal collaborated with Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward 5 and Ward 15 to launch the Green Homes: Green Kathmandu project in January 2023. The ongoing program utilizes “green homes” to counter the challenges of poor waste management, severe water pollution, and worsening air quality. Kathmandu lacks open spaces and sustainable agriculture, causing the price of fresh produce to skyrocket.

Over the last year, volunteers and staff of GPF Nepal have provided education and training on a variety of techniques to help citizens transform their homes into eco-friendly and sustainable properties. They learned about sustainable solid waste management, upcycling plastic waste to create new marketable products, making eco-friendly sanitary pads, rainwater harvesting, rooftop gardening, and sustainable farming techniques. Vital health education allowed them to also protect their household from waterborne diseases and reduce air pollution.

Anjali, a participant, expressed her gratitude for being a part of Green Homes: Green Kathmandu. She shared her reflection, saying:

I am dedicated to putting into practice everything I have learned. As a demonstration of my commitment to sustainability, I have sold my petrol car and purchased an electric vehicle. Additionally, I have incorporated eco-friendly products into my business, selling 150 soaps and 50 liters of liquid soap each month at my shop. Furthermore, I have implemented rooftop farming to ensure a steady supply of vegetables for my family.

I am deeply thankful to Global Peace Foundation Nepal and Engage Nepal for providing me with this invaluable opportunity to make a positive impact on both my community and the environment.

Sarita was another beneficiary of the training provided by GPF Nepal. She shared:

In the past year of my involvement in the Green Homes: Green Kathmandu project, I have undergone significant personal and professional transformation. Initially, I struggled with shyness and lacked confidence in interacting with others. However, through my participation in the project, I have learned to overcome these challenges, build confidence, and develop essential teamwork and networking skills.

Working alongside my team, I have successfully produced and sold liquid soap within our community. Additionally, I have embraced sustainable practices such as rooftop farming using home-produced compost and waste reuse. By selling non-biodegradable waste and upcycling plastic products, I have also generated income. Together with my team, we have sold 302 units of liquid soap, with a growing demand from friends and relatives.

I am immensely grateful for the support provided by this project, which has not only empowered me personally but has also contributed to my livelihood.

GPF Nepal is dedicated to contributing to the country’s sustainable development. With ongoing participation in events like the Regional Conference on Rainwater Harvesting and Management and World Water Day, GPF Nepal partnered in forums, service projects, and outdoor youth leadership programs to help young people and families connect with nature and the environment.

People who value both the individual and communal impact of serving others become owners of solutions to challenges, not victims of their circumstances. They are empowered with the experience and character to create powerful change.

One of the most natural ways this mindset can come about is through the vision of One Family under God.

When we look at the people in our community and society as members of the same human family, we are naturally inclined to serve others. It motivates us to create long-lasting solutions to the challenges facing our brothers, sisters, parents, and children, whether by blood or through our shared humanity. This is the education and dialogue that Global Peace Foundation India is utilizing through the PeaceHub campaign.

In an era marked by global challenges and societal divisions, the imperative for fostering peace and understanding within communities has never been more crucial. Recognizing this need, Global Peace Foundation (GPF) India has taken proactive steps to initiate the PeaceHub Campaign across the nation.

The PeaceHub campaign aims to advance communities towards the principles of peacebuilding and cultivate development for a culture of service. The inaugural PeaceHub, the RC Youth Peace Club, comprising thirty passionate young individuals, is a testament to this commitment.

The sessions conducted at the GPF India headquarters provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of peacebuilding values, emphasizing themes such as unity, dialogue, and service. Through interactive discussions, supplemented by study workbooks and insightful videos, participants explored the real-life implications of these concepts, equipping them with the tools to become agents of positive change in their communities.

Building upon this success, the initiative extended its reach to Mount Abu Public School’s teaching community. Witnessing active engagement and enthusiasm from educators, the PeaceHub campaign facilitated a seamless transition of peacebuilding values from teachers to students within the classroom and at home.

A pivotal aspect of the PeaceHub campaign is its focus on practical application. In line with this ethos, the teachers at Mount Abu Public School will organize a happiness mela (Indian fair) for the students and parents to foster joy and harmony and amplify the impact of community service.

Meanwhile, the RC Youth Peace Club is actively engaged in its community service project to organize a donation drive in an underprivileged region of East Delhi. By leveraging social media platforms, the program is promoting peacebuilding initiatives through a series of reels, extending the reach and impact of its efforts.

GPF India envisions expanding the PeaceHub network to encompass diverse communities nationwide. By empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote peace and understanding, the campaign strives to catalyze a ripple effect of positive change, fostering a more harmonious and interconnected society.

Through concerted efforts and collective action, the PeaceHub campaign exemplifies the transformative power of community-driven peacebuilding, offering a beacon of hope for a brighter, more peaceful future in India and beyond.

The future can substantially change when we can inspire the youth and empower them with character, universal values, and moral and innovative leadership capacities. Global Peace Foundation’s new enterprise, Transforming Education in the Global South, incorporates holistic development and cultivation of character in educators and youth. The number of young people in the world is the most significant number it has ever been—over 1.2 billion, with almost 90% living in the global south. This presents a golden opportunity for families and educators to provide these young people with the principles, tools, and skills to develop the moral character crucial for their growth and development to lead the world toward peace.

Educating our youth is critical to their ability to establish a strong foundation of character to become moral and innovative leaders committed to a purposeful future of positively contributing to society. The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) recognizes the importance of this and, as such, has made transforming education one of its global core components. Transformative education expands the focus from conventional education and its rigid emphasis on academics, uniformity, and obedience to a more holistic model, underscoring the importance of character and creativity necessary to thrive in today’s rapidly changing technical world.

GPF’s new enterprise, Transforming Education in the Global South: Toward 2050 (TEGS:2050), embodies the principles of holistic development and cultivation of character first for educators and leaders as changemakers, followed by students. As noted in GPF’s TEGS: 2050 Launch Story, the number of young people in the world is the largest number it has ever been—over 1.2 billion, with almost 90% living in the global south and representing a significant portion of the population. This presents a rare opportunity for families and educators to provide these young people with the principles, tools, and skills to develop moral character and values crucial for their growth and development as future leaders under GPF’s vision of “One Family Under God.”

TEGS: 2050 utilizes a four-pronged strategy. In addition to holistically transforming educators, leaders, and students, the three additional focus areas are creating regional models in nations, creating great schools and universities, and building campaign awareness. The emphasis on developing regional models has seen the initiative grow from its initial inception in Region 3 of the Philippines in 2022 to its expansion to other areas, such as Kenya, Uganda, and India in the Global South in 2023. Further expansion is planned for 2024 and beyond.

Partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities have created an outline of core competencies for educators to champion change, embodying three areas: amazing culture, continuous innovation, and quality outreach extending beyond educational institutions to families, communities, and organizations.

For example, an Education Transformation Workshop (1 of 3 Series) for Senior Education Stakeholders was held at Makerere University Business School in Kampala, Uganda, on October 30 and 31, 2023. Dr. Tony Devine, GPF vice president of Education, was the workshop’s chief facilitator with a theme of Shaping a Purposeful Future Together through Transformative Education. The in-person event was attended by 81 people on October 30 and 95 people on October 31, with a supplemental audience of virtual attendees on both days and follow-up meetings and phone calls with several university and government officials shortly after the workshop concluded.

The workshop covered four topics delivered in three sessions: (1) Visualizing the Purpose and Future of Education—Towards 2050, (2) The Foundation of Character, and (3) The Holistic Development of Educators and Students and Moral and Innovative Leadership. Participants were enthusiastically engaged in each session. One attendee stated, “Technological changes are occurring today; hence, changes are inevitable, such as the use of smartphones. We should, therefore, find the best means of guiding our learners on responsible use of technology.” Another participant commented on the importance of building moral character: “Character is superior to knowledge. As a teacher, I should put more emphasis on character than content in my teaching to nurture more morally upright individuals.”

Building awareness of the TEGS:2050 campaign is ongoing. Efforts to align the initiative regionally and expand the vision across educational institutions were part of a targeted strategy during 2023. A key achievement was the Global Peace Leadership Conference in Region 3 of the Philippines, which began in December 2002, where over 300 education representatives gathered to learn about TEGS:2050 foundational concepts. The launch of TEGS:2050 was also highlighted at the Global Peace Convention in December 2023, where transformative education concepts were presented to an engaged audience of more than 300 educators and leaders.

The journey continues in 2024 as the strategy to actualize the transformative vision of TEGS:2050 grows stronger with activities such as the upcoming phases 4, 5, and 6 of Transformative Education workshops and Moral and Innovative Leadership training in the Philippines. Enhanced collaboratives will also be initiated with educators, policymakers, and leaders in the Philippines, Uganda, and Kenya to further align curriculum and national models with the TEGS: 2050 initiative.

The future of peaceful coexistence relies on today’s development of tomorrow’s moral and innovative leaders. In other words, today’s young people are our hope for a better tomorrow. However, they depend on an education that prepares them with the knowledge, tools, and skills to build the character and creativity necessary to positively assess, adapt, and act in ways that positively impact their families, communities, and society. TEGS:2050 provides a path to do just that.

In January 2024, in the heart of Kathmandu, Nepal, under the visionary leadership of Bambie Panta, Global Peace Women (GPW) Nepal and Global Peace Foundation (GPF) spearheaded Project Saksham, a transformative initiative aimed at nurturing values, empowering families, and fostering a culture of service. Project Saksham is a leadership and life skills training program for women and youth based on the Global Peace Values Framework launched in March of 2022 by GPW Nepal in partnership with GPF Nepal. The program unfolded across multiple sessions held at Dhading Bal Batika International School and New Star Pole English Secondary School between January 26 and 31.

Rooted in the shared principles of the GPF and GPW, Project Saksham embodied the ethos of “One Family under God.” It championed respect for diversity, intrinsic values, and fundamental rights, emphasizing the importance of character development in students’ lives. Through engaging sessions, women and students were instilled with values that would serve as guiding beacons throughout their life journey.

Three essential elements were integral to the program: Interfaith Leadership, Strengthening Families and Building a Culture of Service. Interfaith Leadership promoted unity and understanding among students from diverse backgrounds while Strengthening Families and emphasizing the pivotal role of good character in enhancing familial bonds. Meanwhile, Building a Culture of Service inspired participants to become agents of positive change, transcending self-interest for the betterment of society.

With 113 students, 18 volunteers, 3 staff members, 21 women, and 108 parents actively involved, Project Saksham yielded profound outcomes. Students exhibited growth in character, volunteers embraced a culture of service, and parents recognized the importance of mental health in fostering peaceful family dynamics. Testimonies echoed the program’s transformative impact, with participants expressing newfound insights and commitments to positive change.

“Today, I learned about how we as parents can maintain our mental well-being as well as take care of our physical health. I learned about the importance of self-care and how it is directly connected to our children’s behavior and mental health,” reflected a parent who was a participant.

The strategic evaluation underscored the pivotal role of values-based education in promoting sustainable practices and attitudes. It advocated integrating such initiatives into educational curricula and community development programs to nurture a responsible and compassionate society.

Looking ahead, Project Saksham outlined a follow-through plan to sustain its momentum. Project Saksham’s legacy of empowerment and enlightenment illuminated pathways towards a brighter, more harmonious future for Nepal and beyond. Through parenting education initiatives, the project hopes to continue to educate parents on their vital role in holistic child development. When we live in accordance with universal laws and in harmony with the natural world, we can best tap the resourceful energy of human creativity. Innovative leadership focuses that energy to find new and inventive approaches to solve problems and create new opportunities.” —Dr. Hyun Jin P. Moon

Many Global Peace Foundation programs incorporate a culture of service and environmental conservation into the moral and innovative leadership education of young people around the world. Leadership that considers the concerns of the entire human family, especially in preserving the natural environment we share, can best promote a higher quality of life for our entire human family, and lay the groundwork for sustainable peace. One example of this impactful process is GPF Kenya, which is establishing tree nurseries at schools nurtured by students and representatives from partners in the local communities.

In an ongoing effort to protect environmental conservation, Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Kenya is working with partners to establish tree nurseries.

Key partners met in January 2024 to inspect one tree nursery at Lenana School. The Lenana School tree nursery is one of eleven tree nurseries slated for establishment in 2024. This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to environmental sustainability and aligns with the national tree-growing strategy, aiming to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.

The tree nursery initiative plays a crucial role in fostering the growth of saplings, which will, in turn, contribute to the realization of the ambitious target set by the national tree-growing strategy. The initiative focuses on the quantity and quality of the trees being planted, ensuring that they thrive and make a lasting impact on the environment.

The many partners have brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the project.

GPF Kenya has been a driving force in promoting peace and social development, becoming an instrumental partner in initiatives like this one that address global challenges.

The Global Peace Foundation and its partners’ joint efforts in establishing the tree nursery at Lenana School exemplify a model of collaboration for a shared vision. As they align with the national tree-growing strategy, the initiative not only contributes to the country’s environmental goals but also stands as a testament to the collective impact that can be achieved through strategic partnerships.
