Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon

Global Peace Convention 2021

Environmental stewardship underscores the responsibility we all share in caring for the natural world and ensuring its long-term health. At the heart of this celebration was the collective commitment to conservation, with a focus on practical actions that will make a real difference in Kenya’s fight against environmental degradation.

Global Peace Foundation Kenya, alongside key partners, recently celebrated the 2nd Mazingira Day, a day dedicated to environmental awareness and action, at Starehe Girls Centre. This event was a powerful demonstration of environmental stewardship, as it aimed to address the critical challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution while promoting sustainable practices that can safeguard our planet’s future.

A Collaborative Commitment to Sustainability

Speakers highlighted the community’s commitment to supporting the national tree-growing strategy. By actively participating in efforts to plant trees and promote sustainability, the Starehe Girls Centre is instilling the values of environmental responsibility in its students, encouraging them to become future stewards of the environment.

A representative from KCB Bank also demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, announcing its goal of planting 1,500 trees at its branches by 2027, with a broader vision to plant 1 million trees annually. This initiative not only contributes to the ongoing national tree-growing campaign but also sets a model for other corporations to integrate environmental stewardship into their business practices.

Empowering Communities to Protect the Environment

Representatives from Global Peace Foundation Kenya highlighted the collaborative efforts that have allowed them to establish over 15 tree nurseries across 11 counties, which have produced over 2 million trees to date. These nurseries, with the capacity to grow 100,000 trees each, are a testament to the power of grassroots efforts in achieving large-scale environmental goals. Through such initiatives, communities are not only being empowered to take ownership of their environment but are also contributing directly to Kenya’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

Taking Action: Planting 150 Trees

The event concluded with a hands-on demonstration of environmental stewardship—planting 150 trees at Starehe Girls Centre. This symbolic act was a reminder that environmental conservation requires both advocacy and action. Each tree planted represents a commitment to the future, helping to restore ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions, and promote biodiversity.

Moving Forward: Fostering a Culture of Environmental Stewardship

As Kenya continues to face environmental challenges, collective action is essential. The 2nd Mazingira Day was a powerful reminder that environmental stewardship is not just the responsibility of one organization or sector—it requires a broad and inclusive approach. By working together—across communities, businesses, schools, and government—we can protect and restore our environment for future generations.

The efforts seen at Mazingira Day serve as an example of how environmental stewardship can be woven into the fabric of everyday life. From the leadership of organizations like KCB Bank and Starehe Girls Centre to the grassroots efforts of local communities, every action counts. With sustained commitment and collaboration, Kenya can meet its ambitious environmental goals, ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for all.

If you don’t have passion, you don’t have ownership. If you don’t have ownership, you’re not going to make that dream something that motivates and animates your life.”

Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon
Global Youth Summit Philippines

Youth leadership development plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of nations, particularly in countries like Tanzania, India, Mongolia, and Nigeria, where large youth populations face significant socio-economic challenges. These challenges, if not addressed, can lead to increased unemployment, social unrest, and poverty. However, with the right initiatives, young people can become a driving force for economic growth, peacebuilding, and social cohesion. The Global Peace Foundation (GPF) has recognized the importance of empowering youth through moral and innovative leadership training, entrepreneurial development, and social engagement. Their programs across these countries aim to nurture youth into proactive leaders committed to positive societal transformation.

The following is a summary of recent activities of the Global Peace Foundation and its values-based approach to peacebuilding.

Tanzania’s Youth Bulge: Opportunities and Challenges

Tanzania, as with many developing nations, faces a “youth bulge,” with nearly one-third of the population under the age of 35, according to the 2022 national census. This demographic represents both significant potential and daunting challenges. On one hand, young people can drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic dynamism. On the other, they place immense pressure on the country’s infrastructure, education systems, and healthcare services.

Key challenges faced by Tanzanian youth include income insecurity, where few graduates secure formal sector jobs, and poor education quality, particularly in rural areas. Many young people drop out of school due to factors like poverty, early marriages, and limited opportunities. Additionally, health issues, such as mental health problems, malaria, and reproductive health challenges, are rampant, with limited access to treatment.

Social problems such as gender-based violence, child marriages, and teenage pregnancies further exacerbate these challenges, leading to increased poverty, rising crime rates, and political apathy among the youth. One critical issue is the underrepresentation of youth in decision-making roles at both the national and local levels, which hinders effective policy development and perpetuates a cycle of disempowerment.

To address these issues, GPF Tanzania has initiated programs to empower youth with the tools they need for personal and professional growth. In 2024, GPF organized an event on International Youth Day in Mtwara, focusing on the role of youth in peacebuilding and digital technology for economic empowerment. The event, which attracted over 1,500 youth participants, underscored the importance of digital literacy and responsible technology use in fostering economic growth, particularly in areas like agriculture, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and artificial intelligence (AI).

While technology presents vast opportunities for economic development, it also carries risks like cyberbullying and misinformation, which can disrupt communities. GPF’s goal is to help Tanzanian youth harness the power of digital tools to advance peace and social change while promoting responsible use and critical thinking.

Peacebuilding and Leadership in India and Beyond: The Global Peace Foundation’s Approach

On a broader scale, GPF is deeply invested in peacebuilding and leadership development for youth, aiming to create a generation of leaders committed to unity, peace, and sustainable development. An example of this is the Peacebuilding Leadership Training workshop held in September 2024. The workshop brought together approximately 100 students from diverse fields, including nursing, business, and medical sciences, to explore the role of youth in peacebuilding.

The training focused on developing leadership skills rooted in empathy, active listening, and interfaith cooperation. The chairman of GPF India inspired participants by discussing the crucial role of youth in fostering peace and the concept of a “peace army” envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi. The workshop included meditation, interfaith dialogue, and community service, encouraging students to integrate these values into their professional and personal lives.

One key outcome of the workshop was the launch of Youth Peace Clubs, designed to keep participants engaged in ongoing peacebuilding activities. The event emphasized the need for young people to be proactive in addressing global challenges such as conflict, inequality, and climate change.

Youth Empowerment Through Entrepreneurship: NIYED Program in Nigeria

Entrepreneurship is another essential avenue for youth empowerment, particularly in addressing unemployment and underemployment—two critical challenges faced by young people in many countries. In Nigeria, where a large percentage of youth struggle to find meaningful employment, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) has partnered with organizations like Besouro Social Development Agency to run the Nigerian Youths Entrepreneurship for Development (NIYED) program.

Launched in July 2024, the NIYED program is a three-month virtual training initiative aimed at young Nigerians aged 18-30 who have either started a business or have an idea for one. The program provides theoretical content and practical skills across ten training sessions, focusing on areas like business planning, branding, marketing, and the use of digital tools for business development. The program also emphasizes mentorship and community service, encouraging participants to integrate social responsibility into their entrepreneurial ventures.

More than 60 young Nigerians from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds participated in the first phase of the program, which culminated in the creation of actionable business plans. A key element of the program was the one-on-one mentorship, which helped participants navigate the challenges of starting and growing businesses.

Conclusion: A Vision for Global Peace and Prosperity

The youth in Tanzania, India, Mongolia, and Nigeria represent a vast and untapped reservoir of potential. With the right investments in education, technology, peacebuilding, and entrepreneurship, they can become powerful agents of change, driving not only economic growth but also social cohesion and global peace.

Initiatives like GPF’s programs in these countries are crucial in equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to navigate the complexities of the modern world. By promoting leadership, entrepreneurship, and community service, these programs are laying the groundwork for a more peaceful, prosperous, and connected future, where young people from all backgrounds can work together for the common good and build One Family under God. GPF’s work shows that empowering youth isn’t just about teaching them how to succeed—it’s about inspiring them to lead with compassion, integrity, and a commitment to a better world.

Dr. Hyun Jin P. Moon announced the launch of the Global Peace Leadership Corps (GPCorps) in December 2023. The corps aims to become the premier, global initiative through which young leaders engage in peacebuilding and service programs to address critical issues, motivated by the vision of One Family Under God. In 2024, the GPCorps has already trained over 2,500 young leaders across 17 locations in the Philippines.

GPCorps 2024 in the Philippines emphasized key areas such as conflict resolution, cultural understanding, and sustainable development. Through a mix of workshops, seminars, and hands-on projects, participants learned how to lead initiatives that foster peace within their communities. The goal was to empower these young leaders to address global issues with both confidence and creativity.

Each of the 17 GPCorps sites, along with this year’s Global Youth Summit, was linked to specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which encompass critical issues like poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability. By aligning with these goals, the GPCorps ensured that participants not only gained insights into peacebuilding but also learned to tackle these vital global challenges.

A standout feature of the GPCorps was the opportunity for participants to collaborate with local and international experts. These partnerships aimed to inspire innovative ideas and solutions for the challenges communities face worldwide. Learning from experienced professionals deepened participants’ understanding of their chosen issues and equipped them with effective strategies to create positive change.

The program was held in various locations throughout the Philippines, reflecting the country’s rich cultural diversity. This thoughtful approach ensured that youth from all regions could engage in peacebuilding and sustainable development efforts within their own communities.

Participants included members of well-known organizations like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines, student council leaders from universities, and other enthusiastic young individuals. The program fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas, helping participants grow as leaders and learn from one another.

The success of GPCorps was largely driven by the commitment of its volunteers. These dedicated individuals contributed their time and expertise, ensuring the program’s smooth operation. Many had previous summit experience, which was invaluable in making this year’s initiative successful.

From the 2,500 trained leaders, 150 outstanding individuals will be selected for advanced specialized training—50 from Luzon, 50 from Visayas, and 50 from Mindanao. This selected group will receive comprehensive training that includes international exposure and local project implementation, enhancing their capacity to effect meaningful change in their regions.

The Global Peace Leadership Corps 2024 is more than just a training initiative; it is a movement aimed at empowering young people to actively contribute to a peaceful and sustainable future. By addressing real-world issues and aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, GPCorps 2024 provides a vital platform for young leaders to develop the skills needed to make a lasting impact. As the world grapples with increasing challenges related to conflict, inequality, and environmental degradation, the demand for skilled peacebuilders has never been greater. GPCorps 2024 is rising to this challenge by preparing the leaders of tomorrow to create a better future for all.

The Global Youth Summit (GYS) is an annual program that has been gathering thousands of young people in the Philippines for over a decade to promote moral and innovative leadership and bring youth to the forefront as creative problem-solvers for the country’s most pressing issues.

GYS 2024, a collaborative effort between SM Cares and the Global Peace Foundation, offered a groundbreaking experience for Filipino youth by uniting over 12,000 emerging leaders from across the nation to tackle some of the country’s most urgent issues. Spanning 17 key locations throughout the Philippines, this year’s summit created a remarkable opportunity for innovation, critical thinking, and collaborative leadership, all geared towards advancing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This event featured a range of activities aimed at addressing global issues in technology, health, education, and sustainable development. The summit’s main goal was to cultivate a network of empowered Youth Leaders dedicated to fostering ethical and innovative leadership, advancing sustainable development, and enhancing cross-cultural understanding. This was notably showcased through the eagerly awaited Seed Grant Competition, which inspired participants to develop and execute solutions aligned with the SDGs.

The regional president of GPF Asia Pacific underscored the summit’s broader vision of global impact and collaboration saying that he hopes the young leaders will create a nation where everyone can reap the benefits.

In a pioneering move, GYS 2024 was held concurrently at 17 different locations nationwide, with each site concentrating on a particular SDG. This setup allowed discussions and activities to be customized to address the specific challenges of each area and ensured that youth from every region could actively participate in the global dialogue.

Representatives from GPF Philippines emphasized the need to work together, empowering each other and actively engaging in creating a sustainable future.

The program was carefully crafted to motivate and prepare the next generation of leaders with the skills and insights necessary for creating a better world. Interactive elements, such as Q&A sessions following each speaker’s talk and the highly anticipated #GYSTakeaways, provided participants with opportunities to explore the issues more deeply and consider practical solutions.

A program director for SM Cares reinforced fairness and equity as central to sustainable development.

Cultural performances opened each summit location, showcasing the Philippines’ rich heritage and enhancing participants’ cultural awareness. This lively celebration of local traditions provided a vibrant start to the ensuing discussions.

Attendees comprised members from accredited youth organizations affiliated with local government units, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines, student council officers from state colleges and universities, and engaged youth advocates from various groups. These participants represented a broad spectrum of the nation’s youth, all united by a common dedication to sustainable development.

The success of #GYS2024 was greatly facilitated by the devoted volunteers from the Global Peace Leadership Corps, who were crucial to the event’s success. Many had previously participated in past summits, while others were experiencing it for the first time. Their steadfast dedication and enthusiasm were vital in fulfilling the summit’s goal of empowering youth leadership.

Aligned with the UN SDGs and reaching across the Philippines, the Global Youth Summit 2024 emerged as a vital platform for young people to engage with and address global challenges. This summit represented a major advance in empowering youth to lead efforts toward a sustainable and prosperous future for everyone. The Global Youth Summit 2024 was more than just an event; it marked the start of a movement, positioning the youth at the forefront of shaping a sustainable future.

Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Indonesia’s “Peace!Project” is a signature program created to help young leaders develop a deeper understanding of their own and other religions and the values they all share to foster respect and friendship.

Youth from a wide range of religious backgrounds met at the Jakarta Cathedral Church in January 2024 for the latest Peace!Project program.

“One of our efforts with the Peace Project, when, for example, there are presidential and vice-presidential candidates who bring up the issue of religion in their campaign, we hope that friends who take part in the Peace Project can be wiser; become agents to convey to other people, that religion is not like that, so we can’t be pitted against each other,” said GPF Indonesia General Manager Shintya Rahmi Utami.

Shintya said that another critical way to encourage the younger generation to remain peaceful amidst differences in culture and religion is to use social media to build a positive movement for peace. “At GPF Indonesia, our team is improving how we work on social media,” she said. “So, we are trying to produce positive content and narratives so that young people are more aware of the election and are not easily provoked or pitted against each other.”

Putri, a participant, shared her experience, saying,

“I am very impressed with this year’s opening at the Cathedral Church. The diversity, inclusivity, and tolerance demonstrated are truly commendable. It marks a delightful moment as it signifies the beginning of positive collaboration. I feel happy and excited to come here, to the Cathedral Church, as a form of support for efforts to enhance tolerance. I also appreciate the involvement of friends with disabilities, a group often marginalized. They are not just engaged but also recognized as agents of change who can spread the values of tolerance.”

Ms. Susi, representing the Jakarta Cathedral Church, said the collaboration for the Peace!Project was a “concrete manifestation of how we can live harmoniously.” She stated, “We support each other, setting an example of how the younger generation can work towards clear goals. This is crucial as a shelter for them and also as a way to inspire unity.”

By Lee Gyu-lee

MANILA, Philippines – “A dream as a concept means nothing, but if people take ownership over that dream, that’s where change comes about.”

Hyun Jin Preston Moon, founder and chairman of the Global Peace Foundation (GPF), a non-profit organization, stressed the importance of the youth and a sense of ownership by each individual to bring peace and unification to the divided Korean peninsula.

The chairman, who founded the organization in 2009 to promote inclusive peacebuilding worldwide, has forged his way into Korea’s unification movement, launching a coalition called Action for Korea United (AKU) in 2012. The coalition brings together about 1,000 non-governmental organizations in Seoul to raise awareness and present a vision for the unification of the two Koreas, particularly among younger generations.

Noting that the younger generations could play crucial roles in solving the unification issue, Moon expressed concerns over how disinterested they are in the issue despite their potential to influence change.

“Young Korean people need to come out of their slumber. I realize that they have been misinformed in many ways, but I’m going to provide you the opportunity to know the truth and the solution to make your future better and brighter,” he said during an interview with The Korea Times at Manila Marriott Hotel in the Philippines, on Dec. 14.

“The young generation has a special opportunity in history where they can fulfill the unfulfilled dreams of their grandparents and their parents and be the architects of developing and building a new nation; a new nation that can live or strive to live up to the tremendously noble ideas … If the Korean young people can take ownership of it, believe me, this works.”

He explained that the widely-held notion that unification will bring about devastating aftershocks to the Korean peninsula is a miscoception caused by misinformation.

“There are so many models of successful transition and successful development that many academics have not really brought into the discussion. I will start to bring them in, but then it’s really up to the media to give that truth to the young people,” Moon said.

“So they realize that when I think about my future and I think about the challenges here in South Korea, instead of complaining about it, I can do something about it. Because unification will solve all the issues that I’m currently facing. Unification should be the issue of young people.”

Citing the current economic issues in the country, he added that once the younger generations are properly educated, they will come to understand that unification could provide solutions.

<img decoding="async" src="https://newsimg.koreatimes.co.kr/2023/12/18/87e36b29-a53a-46fe-a291-c451c7b7a4ac.jpg" alt="Hyun Jin Preston Moon gives a keynote speech during International Forum On One Korea, a part of Global Peace Convention 2023, held at Manila Marriott Hotel in the Philippines, on Dec. 12.

“The birth rate (in South Korea) is so low that you have fewer employees and yet you still have such a high unemployment rate that’s a huge indictment on the South Korean economy … You need to create greater incentives for people to participate in capital creation. That’s what’s going to build the engine of growth,” he said.

“If young people really understand the truth and the implications of unification, I know that they will be the greatest advocates for unification because it’s about their future.”

Moon’s 2016 book, “Korean Dream: A Vision for a Unified Korea,” presents his “Korean Dream” framework towards the practical process of reunification, laying out his prospect for a peaceful and united Korea.

In the book, he emphasizes Korea’s deep-rooted ideology of “Hongik ingan,” which means to broadly benefit all humankind.

“It’s not just about money at the end of the day, but it’s about living for something higher, something that is worth living for a higher purpose. Unification is a moral issue. It’s a human rights issue; a reflection on the Korean people in Korean character that we are allowing this to happen, especially people in the South, who are well-to-do and wealthy,” he said, adding the ideology should be reminded again to bring people together.

“Korea was divided by the ideology of the Cold War, but now in Korean society, it’s divided by many different factors … That’s why I emphasize the importance of Korean identity and that identity comes from our 5,000 years of history, especially the ‘Hongik ingan’ providential mandate that the Korean people create an ideal nation that can be the inspiration for all of humanity.”

MANILA, Philippines — This year’s Global Peace Convention (GPC), hosted by the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) — a non-profit organization — commenced its five-day event in the the Philippines with a youth festival at the Cuneta Astrodome in Manila, Sunday.

The GPC’s Global Peace Youth Fest 2023, which commenced with a special performance by Japanese drummer Takeshi Chiyozono, invited younger generations of the country to empower them to become global peacebuilders and support a free and unified Korea.

“It’s dreamers that change the world in which we live. So take the opportunity through events such as this to become the owners of the greatest dream of all,” Hyun Jin Preston Moon, the founder and chairman of GPF, said during the keynote speech, encouraging the young attendees to dream big, emphasizing their potential to shape a better world.

The festival featured five sessions, covering topics such as Peaceful Coexistence in a Digital Age and Weaving Unity in Diversity to educate the young atendees on leadership, peacebuilding and essential life skills. It aims to inspire young people to become moral and innovative leaders and highlight their potential contribution to peace and social development.

Moon noted the important role of Filipino youth in bringing peace to the Korean Peninsula, mentioning the similarities of the two countries.

“There is only one nation in this world that has not thrown off the shackles of the tragedies of the 20th century; that is the nation of my homeland Korea,” he said.

“It was a nation whose people had experienced the travesties of that experience and yet was able to overcome it at the end of World War II with the potential of liberation and the hope of building a new nation, very much like the Philippines. Yet once again, that hope was tragically taken away as the Cold War divided that peninsula.”

He called the younger generations to action, referencing the history of the Korean War (1950-1953), when the Philippines sent military aid to Korea, and emphasized the importance of a belief in God to bring their dreams to fruition.

“If you participated in peacebuilding very much like your grandfather’s and your great grandfathers’ that came to the aid of the embattled Korean people during the 1950s, imagine what that would mean for you and your generation and for the station of the Philippines. You will plant the seeds for a new civilization of peace in this world,” Moon said.

“Remember that everything that is good in this world that humanity has achieved has always come from God. It is based upon the spiritual principles that are absolutely unchanging and immutable that allows us to achieve the heights of human potential.”

The convention is a biannual assembly of policy experts, educators and political and civil society leaders sharing and discussing strategies in various areas, including peacebuilding, education, entrepreneurship and sustainable development. This year, the conference, under the theme, One Family under God: Vision for National Transformation and Civilization of Peace, runs through Dec. 14 in Manila, the Philippines.

By HK

I landed a few days ago in Korea after several years! It was very nostalgic and fun to see the change in the environment. The weather is very hot and humid, but if you go into the buildings you encounter blasts of cold air, at least in the cities. Everyone seems very busy, but when I talked to the old ladies and shop owners they were all very jolly and kind, reminding me of a warm grandma or aunt. While I was eating in a restaurant, whatever we asked for came to us in five minutes, no matter how busy the place was. Every little thing we asked for, you could tell she did the best she could.

In the morning we would always eat rice with veggie side dishes, such as tree root, soybean sprouts, cucumbers, and kimchi. Sometimes we would eat fish. Korean food is so healthy; it includes many different plants and uses the entire body of the animal so it wouldn’t go to waste. The Korean people used everything they could to eat and survive in the past, things that other people wouldn’t notice or use, maybe thinking it was kind of weird. In other countries, such as America, whenever we ate out, my mother would sometimes be sad at how much waste they produced from animals like fish or cows. “Do they know fish guts are so tasty?!” My umma (mother) would say, “Ahhhh they should’ve used the cow bones to make soup! In Korean food, they use everything.” And berate me when I left food on my plate. Korean food is really healthy, and they even managed to make it pretty tasty!

When I went to Gyeongbokgung Palace we visited some cultural museums on one of the hottest days of the month. I was surprised at how many foreigners wore hanboks (traditional Korean outfits) in the palace even though it was so hot! Those dresses are not light clothing either; they are full of thick layers. But understandably, they loved the beautifully detailed embroidery and the pretty fabric. In one of the museums, I saw a video on how hanboks were made back in the day. I was shocked at how much work was put into a single hanbok! Just making one thread was so hard, and the people working were old grandmas and grandpas whose backs were literally bent 90 degrees. But they still worked so hard to create even a really plain, cotton hanbok. Their heartfelt attitude was so admirable, pouring in their jungsung (sincerity). What history even the dresses had!

This is the culture I really admire and am so proud to be a part of. I hope Koreans keep their traditions and heart of hongik ingan (living for the benefit of humanity), and with unification, perhaps we can all learn to exemplify the best of what makes us Korean, whether we are from the North, South, or diaspora, as one.

By HK

When my grandparents would visit from Korea, I would always ask about their past, including our ancestry. Hearing my grandfather talk, it was sometimes hilarious and sometimes very bittersweet. He would talk about his childhood since Japanese colonization and how my great-grandfather led our village. The conditions since then are so different from the one we are in right now; Korea was so poor, people were starving, families lost, and many orphans out on the streets. My grandfather told me tragic stories of loved ones being brutally tortured and killed… and how they are still occurring to this day to innocent people who resist North Korea’s regime.

My grandfather told me tragic stories of loved ones being brutally tortured and killed…

Later on, I asked my mother about my ancestry on her side and she told me how my great-grandparents originally lived in North Korea and were in fact wealthy during Japanese colonization, but always donated and gave help and food to others. But when Korea split, their faith compelled them to leave all their riches to escape to South Korea.

I thought that was the end of it, but when I said, “We don’t have any family in North Korea, right?” my mother looked at me shocked and exclaimed, “Of course we do! Almost every Korean family has relatives in North Korea. You have uncles and aunts and cousins you don’t even know about.” I was stunned, and it got me thinking, I love my family so much, and now I realize I have even more people to include in that family—people I’ve never met, that are suffering in a country cut off from the outside world.

I was stunned, and it got me thinking, I love my family so much, and now I realize I have even more people to include in that family—people I’ve never met, that are suffering in a country cut off from the outside world.

I reflected more thinking even if I wasn’t Korean with family in the North, how could I not think about the injustice and suffering of the people in North Korea? This is why we should all unify to restore one Korea; a place where families can be restored and healed and where more people can be saved before it gets worse.

This summer I am going to Korea, and as a Korean living in the diaspora, I want to support One Dream One Korea. I will be helping out with campaigns and projects to help incite the Korean people to unite and push for the unification of our nation as a whole. But my most important step during this trip is to actively publish my thoughts and reflections during this time. I hope my story can inspire others—can inspire YOU—to aid as well.

The Korean Dream is for the world. So ask yourself, why do you care about Korean reunification?

Using social media, the campaign is engaging Koreans and the international community in spreading awareness and support for the dream of One Korea. The Korean Dream Discussion Group on Facebook is a platform for the international community to share their common support for Korea’s future as a unified Korea that can benefit all humanity, addressing key challenges surrounding the Korean peninsula and exploring ways to involve the global family.

The first question asked the group, “Why do you care about the Korean Dream? Why does the reunification of the Korean people and the vision for a unified Korea matter to you?” Voices from Africa, the United States, and beyond chimed in to share their support.

Dr. Hyun Jin P. Moon, author of Korean Dream: A Vision for a Unified Korea, joined the discussion on Instagram:

The divided reality of the Korean Peninsula was an unnatural reality imposed upon the Korean people at the end of WW2. It was never the aspiration of the Korean people to see that division, but to create an ideal unified nation that reflected the founding philosophy of Hongik Ingan; which was to create a nation that could benefit all of humanity. AKU (Action For Korea United) is a movement I founded to realize that aspiration and we have just celebrated the centennial of the 1919 movement of independence on March 1st that captured the essence of that dream. In the end, the Korean Dream should be the destiny of the Korean people.

Sylvia Mohamed from Tanzania shared, “The diversity of our nations does not stop us from supporting others to be one in times of need so I believe in One Korea…I care about One Korea and I believe in the vision of a unified Korea. As part of the global community we are all responsible to make a world a better place by joining hands to fill in the broken puzzles.”

Chandni Halai from Kenya said:

My reason for supporting a United Korea and a better nation for tomorrow is that we all feel that urge within ourselves of moving forward together as a big family. The elders and the adults in Korea are working so that the youth of today and tomorrow don’t have to go through and see what they had seen. To provide a better future for the youth tomorrow.

As humans, we should help the adults and elders. To have those times back…When there was no north or south—just Korea—where families shared meals together…where children shared toys and childhood memories together…where festivals were celebrated on the same day…together…where everyone warmly welcomed each other.

No one deserves pain from separation or discrimination.

Let’s work together so that we can be the medicine to the elders’ wounds inflicted from the partition of Korea. Let’s work hard and give hope to those that are in pain from family separation or any other issues raised from Korea being north and south.
