At the 2025 Korean Dream Hangang Festa held along Seoul’s Han River—a timeless symbol of the Korean people’s resilience, unity, and hope—Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon delivered a visionary keynote commemorating Korea’s 80th National Liberation Day. Speaking before a national and global audience, Dr. Moon affirmed the Korean people’s historic mission to realize the Korean Dream: to build a nation that lives for the benefit of humanity. Emphasizing the power of the people, Dr. Moon called upon every Korean citizen to awaken to their shared responsibility in shaping the nation’s destiny. He emphasized that the strength to achieve peaceful reunification lies not solely in governments, but in the collective will, moral courage, and unity of the Korean people. Through the One Korea Global Campaign, he invited citizens, leaders, and young people from around the world to stand together in advancing a new era of hope and purpose for a unified Korea—one that contributes to peace and prosperity in the world.

10th Anniversary Milestone

The 10th anniversary of the “New Era Unification Song Campaign” is being commemorated with a special release for the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation. The female vocal quartet “Son E Ji U” from Voice Korea is participating in the release of “Korean Dream, Come Shine, Glorious Light!” This marks a significant milestone for the Unification Music Project’s decade-long journey, with the song scheduled for public release at the “2025 Korean Dream Han River Festival” in August.

On June 13, 2025, a new song commemorating both the 80th anniversary of liberation and the 10th anniversary of the “New Era Unification Song Campaign” was unveiled at a press conference held at the Korea Press Center in Seoul. The event announced plans for the “2025 Korean Dream Han River Festival,” marking this historic anniversary.

The “New Era Unification Song Campaign” launched in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of liberation as a culture-based citizen unification movement. Over the past decade, hundreds of stars across multiple genres—including ballad, R&B, trot, and EDM—have participated, featuring artists like BTS’s Jungkook, Peabo Bryson, Insooni, Im Chang-jung, and Jung Dong-ha.

The campaign’s flagship song, “One Dream One Korea,” released in 2015, gained particular significance when it served as the farewell song for the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit and was subsequently included in middle school music textbooks, generating widespread attention.

This year’s commemorative release, “Korean Dream, Come Shine, Glorious Light!” embodies the national aspiration for peace and reunification on the Korean Peninsula. The song represents the pinnacle of unification music, where classical and vocal elements converge.

The “Son E Ji U” quartet consists of female vocalists with exceptional vocal power who achieved first place and top-four finishes across seasons 1-4 of “Voice Korea.” Each member brings distinct vocal tones and styles that harmoniously express the longing for unification.

Director Hong Dae-sung explained his approach: “I wanted to convey the theme of unification in a way that everyone could relate to emotionally. Music is a language that opens hearts, and I hope this song becomes the starting point for creating a unified voice of hope for unification that transcends borders and generations.”

Lee Yeo-jun, Yoo Seong-eun, and Ji Se-hee, who attended the press conference, shared their sentiments: “We feel deeply honored to sing this commemorative song on this historic occasion marking the 80th anniversary of liberation and the 10th anniversary of the campaign. We hope this song will be sung by many people at various events, and that their collective aspirations will help bring about reunification as soon as possible.”

I’m at the International Forum for One Korea.

If I counted, I would have to use two hands, maybe three to keep track of the number of times I heard that Korea is the place of miracles.

One in particular mentioned is the “Miracle of the Han River.”

In 50 years, from the end of the Korean War to the early 2000s, Korea went through unprecedented economic growth, technological development, and improvements in life expectancy and child mortality. By 2010, Korea entered the ranks of G20 nations. Today it is ranked number 13 among the economies of the world and is the only nation that has turned from an aid-recipient to an aid-giving nation.

My first time in Korea was a year after the Seoul Olympics in 1989. It was starkly different. Many of the skyscrapers that you see in Seoul today were either not even imagined or in the process of being built. The streets felt empty after the flurry of Olympic hype. I remember people selling leftover merch at subway entrances.

Today, I sat in one of the newer edifices, one of many that now line the Han River, hearing the call for the next Korean miracle.

Poetically, the forum was held in Yeido, an island nestled in the middle of the Han River and a financial and governing hub of Korea. Would I call it the start of the next Han River miracle?

Hon. Myung Su Lee commented on this serendipity, adding his observation that the Han River flows powerfully and peacefully because the waters run in the same direction.

What the Korean Dream movement, what Action for Korea United is doing, what Dr. Moon sparked when he wrote out the Korean Dream, is to set a point that allows us to look towards and move together.

I saw the power of a shared vision at work during the economic panel at the conference. As the panel of economists and scholars from diverse perspectives and approaches grappled with how possibly economic cooperation could contribute to reunification and regional peace, words were repeated—unity, humanity, peace, and vision. The situation in Korea is hard, the issues are complicated—the human rights crisis in North Korea, nuclear proliferation, the fraying social fabric, dropping birth rates and soaring unemployment in the South, but I learned that in crisis, you start by asking, “Where do we want to go?”

Dr. Moon outlined the “challenges,” that are set before Korea today: resolving the division of their homeland and rediscovering and reconnecting to their identity and destiny. It makes sense to start with fixing eyes upon a vision that speaks across time, that has propelled the Korean miracles to date. Dr. Moon is calling for such a sea change—but it takes each of us—yes, I’m getting behind the Korean Dream as well, to go in the same direction.

Korea is the land of miracles.

Hon. Seung Joo Baek, President of the War Memorial of Korea, listed a few:

The unparalleled economic growth over the last 50 years,

And the Miracle of democratization.

I think I am witnessing the next Korean Miracle—Miracle of the Han 2.0?—unfolding before my eyes. If the waters can flow together.

The 1919 Sam Il movement showed us that 2 million Koreans can come together as one people, dreaming not just of independence but of a nation embodying Hongik Ingan—to broadly benefit all humanity. The rivers remember what politics have forgotten—that what divides Korea is recent and artificial, while what unites it spans five millennia.

Rivers of the North and South

Originating in the North, the Imjin River flows south, unencumbered by the military checkpoints, guard towers, and barbed wire fences of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The river then combines with the great Han River that flows through Seoul. By the time these waters reach the Yellow Sea, they have become a single, powerful flow.

The Imjin-Han River system operates as it has for millennia, long before the artificial division of 1945 that separated a people who share over 5,000 years of common history, language, and cultural traditions.

Just as the Imjin River’s waters merge seamlessly with the Han to form a stronger, more vibrant waterway, so too might the Korean people find their way back to unity despite nearly eight decades of separation and ideological differences.

Beyond Bitter History

For nearly 80 years, the Korean Peninsula has endured a painful division. Families were torn apart, ideologies hardened, and mutual suspicion became entrenched. The Korean War (1950-1953) claimed millions of lives and left physical and emotional scars that still affect both societies today.

Yet beneath this bitter history runs a deeper current of shared identity. The rivers remind us that what divides Koreans is recent and artificial, while what unites them is ancient and natural. When North and South Koreans meet in third countries, they discover their common humanity – the same language, songs, stories, and values, as well as shared ancestral traditions and ideals.

The Unfulfilled Promise of March 1st

The rivers’ journey toward unity echoes the unfulfilled aspirations of the March 1st Movement of 1919, when Koreans across the peninsula rose in peaceful protest against Japanese colonial rule. This watershed moment in Korean history represented the collective yearning for independence and self-determination, with millions of Koreans from all walks of life joining in nationwide demonstrations.

The Declaration of Independence, signed by 33 cultural and religious leaders representing different regions and faiths, articulated a vision for Korea that transcended mere national liberation. These leaders envisioned a nation founded on Hongik Ingan—the ancient Korean ideal of “broadly benefiting humanity.” This founding philosophy, dating back to the mythical establishment of Korea by Dangun in 2333 BCE, envisioned Korea as a nation that would contribute to the good of all humanity rather than pursue narrow self-interest.

Leaders like Ahn Chang-ho and Kim Gu—though differing in their specific approaches—shared this commitment to creating a Korea that would stand as a model nation built on principles of justice, equality, and service to humanity. Their vision was not merely of an independent Korea, but of a Korea that would help lead humanity toward greater harmony and prosperity.

The division of Korea in 1945 prevented this vision from being realized, as geopolitical interests once again superseded the Korean people’s aspirations. Yet like the persistent Imjin River that continues its southward journey despite obstacles, the ideals of Hongik Ingan remain alive in Korean consciousness, waiting for the day when a reunified Korea can finally embody them.

Building a New Nation Together

Reunification would not mean the simple absorption of one state by the other. The problems seen on both sides of the DMZ suggest that neither has all the answers. Rather, Dr. Hyun Jin Moon proposes the creation of a new nation through a process of rediscovering and learning from the ancient Korean values and the Hongik Ingan ideal.

Moreover, he suggests that a new Korean nation might embody a harmonious blend of complementary strengths: Northern resource wealth enhanced by Southern technological expertise; traditional Korean values enriched by globally-engaged innovation; and the resilience forged through hardship complemented by the prosperity built through engagement. This synergy would create something greater than either could achieve alone.

The Ocean Awaits

As the joined rivers ultimately flow into the vast Yellow Sea, they remind us that a reunited Korea would not exist in isolation but would take its place in the wider world. A peaceful, reunified Korean Peninsula would contribute significantly to regional stability and global prosperity.

Like those persistent waters finding their way to unity despite all obstacles, the Korean people may yet navigate the challenging rapids of reconciliation. When they do, they will discover that, like the rivers merging on their journey to the sea, they are stronger together than apart—their combined energies creating new possibilities that neither could achieve alone.

Not only will it benefit the peninsula and the East Asia region through greater peace, stability, and prosperity. It will be a light to the world, showing how even the most extreme division and conflict can be overcome.” -Dr. Hyun Jin P. Moon (2021 Global Peace Convention, Keynote Address)

The dream of a unified Korea is a moral and human calling shared by people across the world. From the halls of Japan’s National Diet to youth forums in Tanzania and Indonesia, a growing international chorus is calling for peace and reunification on the Korean Peninsula. This global wave is not driven by governments but by students, activists, and citizens who believe that the division of Korea is not just a regional issue, but a human one.

Korea’s division after World War II left deep scars that still affect millions of families. But the movement to reunite the peninsula is now powered by a vision that transcends geopolitics—the belief that all people deserve peace, freedom, and dignity.

At the heart of global efforts for reunification lies the Korean Dream—a vision that draws on Korea’s ancient spiritual heritage to inspire a peaceful, values-based unification. This dream envisions a Korea rooted in its founding ideal of “Hongik Ingan”—to live for the benefit of all humanity—and positions reunification not as a political outcome, but as a moral awakening with global relevance. Supporting Korean reunification, then, becomes a step toward a more principled, peaceful world.

Around the globe, young people and civil society are making this dream their own, breathing new life into the call for peaceful reunification.

In Tanzania, the Korean Dream inspired a surge of grassroots engagement. Students, faith leaders, and youth organizations united under the One Korea Global Campaign, collecting thousands of signatures and sharing messages of solidarity. Through virtual conversations with Korean students and signature drives, Tanzanians reaffirmed a simple truth: peace in Korea is peace for the world.

As one Tanzanian student leader said, “We believe the reunification of Korea will be a symbol of hope for divided peoples everywhere.” Their efforts exemplify how shared values—not shared borders—are what truly connect us.

Meanwhile, in Tokyo, over 200 youth leaders from 25 countries gathered for the Japan Young Leaders Assembly, advocating for peace and reunification. The forum featured North Korean defectors, international scholars, and activists who encouraged youth to become “peace creators” in their own communities.

What stood out was the power of story—young leaders using digital media, art, and public speaking to share the message of reunification. Their participation showed that global youth are not bystanders but stakeholders in shaping a more peaceful East Asia.

One speaker noted, “This isn’t just about Korea—it’s about how the world handles division, conflict, and reconciliation.”

In Indonesia, 600 youth came together to reflect on Korea’s March 1st Movement—an early 20th-century struggle for independence that resonates with Indonesia’s own anti-colonial history. The virtual gathering wove together narratives of national identity, peace, and interfaith cooperation.

Indonesian speakers highlighted how principles like Pancasila—the country’s philosophical foundation—align with the Korean Dream’s emphasis on unity and human dignity. This cross-cultural connection deepens global empathy and commitment to Korea’s peaceful future.

Reunification is not just a Korean dream—it’s a global hope. From Africa to Asia and beyond, young people are answering the call for peace with clarity and conviction. Their message is clear: unity is possible when we act with courage, compassion, and shared purpose.

“To tackle the obstacles before us that undermine peace and development we need, at every level – from the highest echelons of government to the smallest village community – leadership that is both moral and innovative.”

The world is facing uprecedented disruption this year. But with great challenges, come great opportunity. More than ever, we need moral and innovative leadership to navigate the uncharted waters ahead.

There is inspiration we can gain from moral and innovative leaders from history. In honor of International Day of Peace, here are a few.

“If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character. If there is beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nations. When there is order in the nations, there will peace in the world.” ― Confucius

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” ― Gautama Buddha

“The Simple Path. Silence is Prayer. Prayer is Faith. Faith is Love. Love is Service. The Fruit of Service is Peace.” ― Mother Teresa

“World peace must develop from inner peace. Peace is not just mere absence of violence. Peace is, I think, the manifestation of human compassion.” ― Dalai Lama XIV

“Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” ― Albert Einstein

“Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars… Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” ― Martin Luther King Jr.

“True freedom is not advanced in the permissive society, which confuses freedom with license to do anything whatever and which in the name of freedom proclaims a kind of general amorality. It is a caricature of freedom to claim that people are free to organize their lives with no reference to moral values, and to say that society does not have to ensure the protection and advancement of ethical values. Such an attitude is destructive of freedom and peace.” ― Pope John Paul II

“Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures. And however undramatic the pursuit of peace, that pursuit must go on.” ― John F. Kennedy

While the world is eyeing North Korean missile launches and the dispute between South Korea and Japan in recent weeks, a global campaign is seeking to raise public awareness of the need for unification on the Korean Peninsula.

Civic activists and citizens gathered at KINTEX, Gyeonggi Province, Aug. 15, to take part in the Action for Korea United Festival, a cultural event held to share the vision of peaceful unification on the Korean Peninsula as part of an international campaign by the Global Peace Foundation (GPF), a nonprofit organization for peacebuilding activities around the globe. This time, it was specifically organized to mark the 74th anniversary of the country’s liberation from Japan in 1945.

During the festival which was co-hosted by Action for Korea United (AKU), a civic alliance of over 800 NGOs, trot artists including legendary singers Kim Yon-ja, Hong-ja and Jung Mi-ae, performed in front of an audience of 10,000 people from around the world, according to the One-K Global Campaign Organizing Committee. Prior to the performance, attendees agreed that citizens should take the lead in unification.

The festival and an international forum on unification held Aug. 14, co-hosted by the GPF and AKU, were designed as a means to better understand the vision of creating a unified nation in line with the founding philosophy of Ingan Hong-ik Ingan who called on the Korean people to live for the betterment of all mankind.

To this end, the AKU has held a series of events since 2015 including K-pop concerts in South Korea and the Philippines and released a campaign song titled “One Dream, One Korea.”

The organizers stressed the importance of taking the initiative and sharing a unified vision among citizens to achieve Koreas’ long-time goal of unification, amid the difficulties that South and North Korea face today. These include military provocations by the North which continues to fire short-range missiles into the East Sea, amid soured relations between the South and Japan over trade and historical issues.

“If only we take the leadership, we can bring about tremendous transformation on this land. But before we do so, we as Koreans, have to strip ourselves of all the foreign constructs that have divided this land. North and South. And even here in South Korea. Left and right. And recognize that we have a common heritage and common identity as the Korean people. We are one Korean family. We have to unite that family,” the organizers said during the event.

Claiming that the Korean people have greatness in their DNA, they added, “That was reflected by the declaration of independence and read one hundred years ago. Remember it was our forefathers that were living through the tragedy of colonization. But in the declaration, they made it a point that Korea should work with Japan to establish peace in East Asia.”

Meanwhile, other VIP guests from all over the world participated in the festival and pledged to join hands to support the unification movement for peace in the region.

“In order to realize the unification of the Korean Peninsula and create a new era in such a rapidly changing environment, we should foster a dream of unification by creating an environment through civic cooperation as well as expanding the unification movement to realize greater values and goals beyond ideological and system barriers,” said Kang Young-kyu, chief of the Korea National Police Veterans Association, one of the co-hosts of the venue said in a congratulatory speech.

Ha Jae-sung, a councilor at Kingston Council in the U.K., said North Korean defectors began to move into his district 15 years ago. “In the beginning, there were conflicts [between Koreans] due to the differences in language and thoughts in the past, but now they understand each other and have initiated a unification movement.”

He added that if Koreans truly dream together, unification will become a reality while pledging to give more support to those North Koreans who want to see their families still in the North.

Civic activists and experts discussed ways to seek unification of the two Koreas amid rising tensions in the region at an international forum Wednesday, after a series of North Korea’s launches of alleged short-range missiles in recent weeks. The convention was held marking the 100th anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement that took place in 1919 during Japan’s colonial rule and the 74th anniversary of liberation from Japan in 1945.

A total of 400 participants from across the world, including security and North Korea experts and civic activists, took part in the International Forum On One Korea. Held under the theme “Historic Opportunity for Korean Unification: Vision, Leadership and Action,” it was hosted by the Global Peace Foundation (GPF), a nonprofit organization, at the Plaza Hotel on Wednesday.

High-profile panelists from all levels of society here as well as political, religious and academic leaders from overseas joined special sessions in three specific fields ― a new unified Korea and economic opportunity, denuclearization and lasting peace in the context of a unified Korea and North Korea religious freedom and human rights advocacy ― to find ways to foster unification and come up with a consensus on the matter.

Notable speakers included Kim Byung-joon, former chairman of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party’s emergency body; Ahn Ho-young, former ambassador to the U.S. and president of the University of North Korean Studies; Huiyao Wang, founder and president of the Center for China and Globalization, a Beijing-based think tank; William Parker, president and CEO at the East-West Institute, a New York-based think tank; and Nicholas Eberstadt, chair of the Henry Wendt in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute.

During a debate on economic opportunities in the North, Park Chong-soo, an adjunct professor at Sogang University and a member of the Presidential Committee on Northern Economic Cooperation, stressed that the realization of unification is a diplomatic issue which cannot be achieved through inter-Korean relations only.

Claiming that the North is trying to make its economic system similar to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Park highlighted that “If the U.S. does not take some actions on the North by the end of this year, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will take his own initiative (with its market) meaning the beginning of a new Cold War.”

Li Gangzhe, an associate professor at Hokuriku University, pointed out the economic gap between Koreas can be filled easily under certain circumstances and said multinational support is necessary.

In a session on denuclearization and lasting peace, Chung Kyung-young, an adjunct professor at Hanyang University, warned the U.S. that U.S. President Donald Trump’s lack of concern about the North’s short-range missile launches is dangerous as they can target U.S. troops in South Korea as well.

Claiming the U.S. cannot achieve anything if it keeps asking the North to strike a “big deal,” Hong Hyun-ik, a chief researcher at the Sejong Institute, said the U.S. should give up the denuclearization-first approach and take a step-by-step approach after defining the meaning of denuclearization. In his opinion, a series of small deals include assurance of the end state, the North’s declaration of its nuclear-related projects and the signing for sanctions relief and improvement in relations.

Koh Yu-hwan, a professor of North Korean studies at Dongguk University, pointed out the denuclearization process, bartering denuclearization with a peaceful regime, is not working as the North has nuclear weapons and sees its relationship with the U.S. as hostile.

On the theme of North Korean religious freedom and human rights advocacy, Thae Yong-ho, a former North Korean diplomat who defected to South Korea in 2016, proposed to write an easy Bible and distribute it throughout the North in a way to spread religious freedoms and show North Koreans how North Korean founder Kim Il-sung created his vision taking influence from the Christian Bible to brainwash his people.

Kim Jae-bum, vice president of the Korean-American Association, insisted that it is necessary not only to give North Koreans freedom of religion, but also convince them of the importance of religion.

Meanwhile, GPF Chairman Moon Hyun-jin urged Koreans to take the initiative in breaking the political difficulties including the North’s missile threats and the current trade war between South Korea and Japan with the aim of unifying the two Koreas.

“The Korean people are divided under two diametrically opposed ideological, political and economic systems, with rival governments in a continual state of war. We, as Koreans, need to recognize the futility of this reality and seek to create a new one,” Moon said in his keynote speech.

“It is our calling and our destiny as Korean patriots, to be the agents of change who can spark a new tomorrow by realizing the dream of a united Korea that will benefit all humanity in the spirit of Hongik Ingan,” he said, adding that the countries’ unification could end the threats to peace and security in East Asia and will greatly benefit the world as a result. Hongik Ingan is a slogan translating to “live and work for the benefit of all mankind.”

The GPF is an international nonprofit organization with headquarters in Maryland in the U.S. and initiatives in 23 countries. The chairman’s father, Moon Sun-myung, founded a religious movement known as the Unification movement.

The GPF has been holding such international conferences throughout the world; the first one was held in the Philippines in 2009 and others have been hosted in the U.S., Kenya, Malaysia and Paraguay. It received a special consultative status in June from the United Nations Economic and Social Council responsible for discussing global economic and social agendas, and coming up with policy recommendations for U.N. member states while partnering with the U.N.’s Department of Public Information since 2016, contributing to the development, implementation and monitoring of agenda items agreed on by U.N. member nations.

As part of the 7 million people in the Korean diaspora, HK’s story represents a powerful voice for a free, independent, and united Korea. The following is her story on Global Peace Foundation explaining why she cares about the reunification of the divided Korean peninsula.

By HK

When my grandparents would visit from Korea, I would always ask about their past, including our ancestry. Hearing my grandfather talk, it was sometimes hilarious and sometimes very bittersweet. He would talk about his childhood since Japanese colonization and how my great-grandfather led our village. The conditions since then are so different from the one we are in right now; Korea was so poor, people were starving, families lost, and many orphans out on the streets. My grandfather told me tragic stories of loved ones being brutally tortured and killed… and how they are still occurring to this day to innocent people who resist North Korea’s regime.

My grandfather told me tragic stories of loved ones being brutally tortured and killed…

Later on, I asked my mother about my ancestry on her side and she told me how my great-grandparents originally lived in North Korea and were in fact wealthy during Japanese colonization, but always donated and gave help and food to others. But when Korea split, their faith compelled them to leave all their riches to escape to South Korea.

I thought that was the end of it, but when I said, “We don’t have any family in North Korea, right?” my mother looked at me shocked and exclaimed, “Of course we do! Almost every Korean family has relatives in North Korea. You have uncles and aunts and cousins you don’t even know about.” I was stunned, and it got me thinking, I love my family so much, and now I realize I have even more people to include in that family—people I’ve never met, that are suffering in a country cut off from the outside world.

I reflected more thinking even if I wasn’t Korean with family in the North, how could I not think about the injustice and suffering of the people in North Korea? This is why we should all unify to restore one Korea; a place where families can be restored and healed and where more people can be saved before it gets worse.

This summer I am going to Korea, and as a Korean living in the diaspora, I want to support One Dream One Korea. I will be helping out with campaigns and projects to help incite the Korean people to unite and push for the unification of our nation as a whole. But my most important step during this trip is to actively publish my thoughts and reflections during this time. I hope my story can inspire others—can inspire YOU—to aid as well.

The Korean Dream is for the world. So ask yourself, why do you care about Korean reunification?
