Distinguished guest and leaders from around the globe who are working tirelessly for the realization of world peace, how are you?

I warmly welcome and thank you for participating in the 2019 Global Peace Convention organized by the Global Peace Foundation. Our theme of “Korean Dream: a Vision for a Unified Korea” is especially significant because we are celebrating the centenary of the historic Samil (March First) Independence Movement.

It is a distinct pleasure to gather with you in my dear homeland of Korea with our shared conviction in the importance of “Women’s role in realizing Korean Reunification and Global Peace.” I would like to thank the Honorable Amina Sambo, humanitarian and wife of the former Vice President of Nigeria; the Honorable Shadya Karume, former First Lady of Zanzibar; Dr. Eva Latham, human rights expert and distinguished educator from the Netherlands; the Honorable Dr. Nona Ricafort, former Commissioner on the Commission of Higher Education in the Philippines; the Honorable In Ja Hwang and the Honorable Yeon Sook Lee, former members of the Korean National Assembly. I would also like to acknowledge the Global Peace Foundation and Global Peace Women Korea for preparing this program.

The Korean Dream and Peaceful Unification

The 2019 Global Peace Convention brings together women leaders from around the world who have transcended national interests through service and dedication. Together, we will collaborate and work toward a unified Korea and a peaceful world.

My husband, Dr. Hyun Jin Moon, and I have continuously striven to realize world peace in all sectors of society. Through the Global Peace Foundation, in particular, we initiated comprehensive and transformative projects to establish peaceful and prosperous societies centered on the vision of One Family under God. Because we believe that the Korean peninsula is geographically and historically positioned to play a critical role in realizing world peace, we focused our efforts on building substantive progress toward Korea’s reunification. With Action for Korea United, a coalition of over 800 civic organizations, we are leading a grassroots movement guided by the Korean Dream to usher in the peaceful reunification of Korea.

My husband authored Korean Dream: A Vision for a Unified Korea to ask fundamental questions and offer a practical solution regarding the issue of Korean reunification. Unlike previous approaches that emphasized methodology or the process of reunification, Dr. Moon explored the fundamental question of what a unified Korea should look like. His answer is rooted in the Hongik Ingan ideal which is embedded in 5,000 years of Korean history and culture.

Hongik Ingan, which means to live for the benefit of all humanity, is the founding aspiration of Korea. This simple phrase contains profound spiritual meaning that transcends history and time. Korean reunification cannot be achieved through short-sighted policies based on the geopolitics of the last 10, 20 years. The Hongik Ingan ideal that runs through the Korean Dream represents the destiny and yearning of the Korean people, its DNA. Thus, the reunification of Korea is not just the physical combination of North and South Korea into one whole state. Neither is unification only for the sake of Korea; rather, it is a worthy and historic cause that furthers the peace and development of the entire world.

Women’s Role for Unification and Peace

Then, who should lead the charge to benefit all mankind? Who can play a major role in creating a new nation rooted in the Hongik Ingan ideal? Where does this historical mission start? I dare say that all the women leaders gathered here are the ones who should lead, and I am convinced that this mission begins first in our homes.

Both men and women, of course, share the responsibility to create families and a nation that embodies Hongik Ingan. However, it is undeniable that women are born with a natural affinity for empathy, genuine love, and sacrifice. Think about your own mother. You know to what extent she leads a life of devotion and sacrifice for the sake of the entire family.

However, no mother expects compensation for her sacrifice. She only hopes for her children to be healthy and happy, dedicating herself to the family’s harmony and wellbeing, and guiding everyone on the right path. A righteous and strong-minded mother illuminates not only her family but also helps society and history to shine even under challenging circumstances. Great historical leaders have the dedication and teaching of great mothers behind them. Mothers of many great Korean independence leaders did not stop their children even as they risked their lives. Rather, they taught that it was righteous to serve their homeland. Korean history is filled with countless examples of mothers, women leaders, and women patriots who loved and sacrificed for their country. For instance, Yu Gwan-sun, a young girl raised by righteous and enlightened parents, ended up leading the cheers for Korea during the March First Movement. For her bravery, she was arrested, tortured, and tragically died in prison at the tender age of 18. Yet I believe that the sacrificial spirit of Korea’s women patriots who loved their country and humanity can serve as an exemplary model to women leaders around the world.

The Precious Role of Women and Family as the Foundation for Peace

Where does such a noble life begin? It begins in the home! Family is the most important and fundamental building block of society, the nation, and the world. Familial relationships encompass the most intimate and enduring relationships of love, even more, sacred than religion. This is why parents and family have tremendous influence in shaping a person’s character. We know all too well that someone raised in a family filled with peace, love, and mutual support is likely to have vastly different outcomes from someone who experienced abusive and self-centered relationships.

If we treat each other like brothers and sisters, cherishing and empathizing with each other as parents do, how can destructive violence and war ever take root? If men and women grow up in a family respecting and serving each other because they know that they absolutely need each other, how could we see the widespread animosity between the genders sweeping across Korea and the entire world? I believe that the Hongik Ingan ideal of benefiting every human and the vision of the Korean Dream will provide a fundamental solution to one of the foremost contemporary social issues, the conflict between men and women. Global Peace Women recognizes that men and women each have unique value and dignity that are complementary to each other. Both men and women have the responsibility to work together to create vibrant, happy families.

Furthermore, we assert that the pursuit of human rights and peace should begin in households that strive to treat all human beings as members of their family. Just as a mother naturally becomes the center of love and empathy in the home, women leaders who embody love and service play critical roles in promoting peace and uplifting human dignity throughout society. Recognizing this, we should support the growth and development of women’s leadership around the world.

The Extended Family Model and Women’s Leadership as Fundamental Elements for a Unified Korea and World Peace

Korea’s traditional extended family model can make a significant contribution to one of the greatest tasks to achieving world peace–the peaceful reunification of Korea. For the role of parents and family inextricably determines the fate of a nation.

The creation of a new nation described in the Korean Dream emphasizes the extended family because it is where we inherit traditions and develop the root of identity through three generations. More than in any other setting, the extended family is where we come to realize that we exist today due to the love, sacrifice, and dedication of our parents and forefathers. The shared experience of living for the sake of family members, the nation, and all humanity through an extended family culture will allow the citizens of a newly united Korea to practice Hongik Ingan in their daily lives.

Any dream or vision must be made real through our everyday actions or else remain a fantasy. The extended family model that Koreans cultivated throughout history is the very place where the Korean Dream can come to life through lived experiences.

As Mother Teresa asserted, instead of searching for world peace in any other place, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” This teaching is consistent with Global Peace Women’s advocacy that “Peace Begins in the Home.”

We live in an age when the world needs citizens who internalize Hongik Ingan values, especially women, to further Korean reunification and world peace. More than ever, places of chaos and conflict are yearning for women’s peace, love, and service-based leadership.

Global Peace Women’s Initiatives for Peace based on the Korean Dream

Women leaders making important contributions to various sectors throughout the world!

The reunification of the Korean Peninsula is relevant not only to Koreans but to all people working toward world peace. Thus, it is significant and timely that we are gathered at this convention to discuss “women’s leadership for a unified Korea and global peace.”

We will also share the diverse ways that women leaders around the world are spearheading efforts to realize the Korean Dream vision. We have numerous and innovative case studies, including conferences to further women’s leadership, service-based cultural programs promoting reunification, education to develop the economic capacity of North Korean refugees, culture and art initiatives to promote Kore- an reunification for children in the home, and Korean Dream workbooks for women leaders and elementary school students. This afternoon, women leaders from around the world, as well as North and South Korea, will participate in a special service program. It presents an opportunity for us to give and take love and transcend boundaries between different nationalities.

Korea’s peaceful reunification is not just the work of the Korean government or a handful of organizations. It is a historical mission that Koreans throughout the world and all people should and can work together to fulfill. The moment is now. I sincerely ask that women leaders participating in this convention and all righteous people of the international community pioneer the path to Korean reunification and world peace. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each of you for sharing this noble dream with me and for setting the model of women’s leadership in your families, societies, and the world.

May God forever bless you and your families.

Thank you very much.

Distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Good morning, and welcome to the 2018 Global Peace Leadership Conference. This gathering is a historic and timely event for Africa and the world.

In this blessed country endowed with majestic natural beauty, called the Pearl of Africa, it is befitting that we have gathered under the theme, “Peace Begins in the Home: Women-Led Initiatives for Peace and Development.”

I want to thank the President and the government of Uganda for the warm hospitality and for making this convening possible. I am very inspired to be among many great leaders from around the world.

Introduction

Without exception, all of us long for peace in our homes, our nations and our world. Yet, this peace which all of us desire has eluded us for most of human history. Conflicts in the name of religion have killed millions upon millions. Ethnic bloodshed and genocides have plagued our beautiful lands for ages. Daily violence is perpetrated against women and children in every corner of society. We even face the threat of nuclear conflicts between nations, leaving us to question our very survival.

Nonetheless, we still strive to attain peace in our homes and nations. Such desire resides deep in our original DNA, and all of us, at different levels, have experienced the profound and fulfilling effect that peace brings to our soul and to our surroundings.

My husband, Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon, the founder of Global Peace Foundation, emphasizes that true peace can only come about when we recognize that we are all sons and daughters of one Heavenly Father. That is the common basis on which we can transcend the human trappings, whether they are racial, ethnic, national or even religious, which have caused hatred and division.

In support of this vision of One Family under God, Global Peace Women, since its founding in 2011, has been addressing the critical roles that women must play in building peaceful families, communities and nations.

Unique Value and Role of Women

Naturally, women are peace-builders, harmonizers and healers. This is because we are endowed by our Creator with innate qualities of empathy, grace and caring for others. This is most evident in motherhood, when a mother is completely committed to the wellbeing of her child, giving every ounce of her body and soul. With unconditional love, she makes any sacrifice for her child, no matter how great. A mother’s heart to empathize, to forgive and to embrace is driven by divine qualities that are beyond reason and calculus; it is pure love pouring down, effortlessly and eternally.

The father’s role is undoubtedly critical. However, women’s innate nurturing qualities allow them to impress upon her children, especially during all-important formative years, the value of unconditional love, human kindness and life. We, at Global Peace Women, seek to uplift those qualities and recognize that women have the most important responsibility of raising and educating children to become seekers of peace.

While women have assumed various duties beyond the immediate care of their families, we must remind ourselves that our intrinsic value is not determined by professional success or socio-political status. The true value of a woman, which is unique and irreplaceable, resides in the fact that she can bring new life into this world, infuse her children with genuine love, and allow them to experience the dignity and divinity of human life, beginning in the home and expanding into society and the world.

In my own motherhood journey of raising nine children, I became deeply and fundamentally moved by this realization. I must admit, as a young girl growing up in a traditional Confucius household and observing, for instance, my grandfather’s seemingly preferential treatment of my brother, I sometimes felt less important and lacking in some ways. Why was my brother getting more attention, (or more sweet treats than me), I remember wondering. Should I also have been born as a boy?

Yet, over the course of several years and eventually when I became a mother, I came to appreciate woman’s true value as God intended. Along with tremendous joy and inner fulfillment that comes from being a wife and a mother, with my genuine love and devotion, I was able to become the emotional center of my family. It is in this spirit that Global Peace Women initiated the “Peace Begins in the Home” international movement, recognizing home and family as the foundational bedrock to impart these essential values and principles.

Women’s Role and Contribution to Family and Society

Women leaders from around the world participate in the 2018 Global Peace Leadership Conference in Uganda

The family is the first place where children learn and experience trust, love and respect. Children also learn the virtues of righteousness, integrity and living for the greater good, as well as the lessons of self-sacrifice, hard work and responsibility.

Simply stated, a virtuous family built on true love embodies the essence of what all people cherish, forming the basis for civil, ethical and prosperous societies. It is the school of life, and women are its most important teachers.

GPW celebrates women’s fundamental role in the family and seeks to expand such a role to societies so that more women can lead as peacemakers.

Currently active in 15 chapters around the world, GPW is conducting the Global Peace Women Leadership Academy (GPWLA) in Nepal, Mongolia and Kenya, among others, to raise young women through mentorship programs. We are hosting seminars and conferences in Paraguay, Uruguay and Korea to engage women leaders who champion the value of family, and to recognize those who exemplify such efforts. GPW is also organizing peace education campaigns in the United States and Korea to mobilize mothers to teach their young children about the need for the unification of the Korean peninsula as the cornerstone of peace in today’s world.

In addition, we are also addressing the issues that affect women on a practical level. One such project, which was implemented here in Uganda, was called the Clean Cookstove Project. Another project launched in Nigeria is a successful drug intervention program to address the growing problem of drug abuse in women. We also organize projects for women of Mongolia and Kenya to make and sell local handcrafted products.

Surely, there are other areas of major concern to which GPW hopes to make a positive impact by tackling the root causes. The devastating AIDS epidemic and domestic violence, for example, are significant problems that erode the foundational social fabric and deny those who are affected by the basic God-given human dignity and value. These problems cannot be fundamentally resolved without the individual families, as a school of life, first instilling the innate values of and respect for oneself and others. Along with the values-based teachings at the family level, the tribes, the faith communities and the government bodies must reinforce and support those efforts through appropriate policies and assistance. The combination of education and practical solutions that emphasize the value of family as well as women’s indispensable role in homes and in communities will undoubtedly make a lasting, positive impact on our world.

Conclusion

Ladies and gentlemen,

In promoting the profound vision of building One Family under God, GPW recognizes that “family” is fundamental to the meaning and fulfillment of that dream. We are proud to champion the value of family and to engage in works that promote this vision because home is where peace begins. (Can we all say together, Peace Begins in the Home?)

I am honored to be among leaders who deeply love God and are dedicated to building peace. It is my hope that all of us can join together in committing our hearts, effort

and unique faculties to this noble cause of creating a world of peace by raising families of peace, one family at a time.

Thank you very much, and may God bless you and your families.

March 2nd, 2017 – Manila Marriott Convention Center & Hotel, Philippines

New Women’s Leadership Culture for Peace and Development: From the Home to the World

To all the guests, aspiring leaders, and participants gathered here today, magandang umaga, good morning—welcome to this important forum to establish a new women’s leadership culture for peace and development.

I especially wish to recognize the movers and shakers of the Global Peace Women’s movement, including Dr. Nona Ricafort—I hear some audience had a chance to visit her house last night. I heard it was a great success—H.E. Hajiya Amina Namadi Sambo, Dr. Eva Latham, our great friend here, Hon. Cynthia Aguilar Villar, our dear friend Donna Schuller and Rachel Murray, Hon. Yunsook Lee from Korea, and Keiko Kobayashi from Japan. We’re all honored to have all of you here.

Whenever I visit the Philippines, I feel warmly welcomed by my Filipino brothers and sisters. It is fitting that we are gathering in this beautiful country which has a legacy of great women leaders. I was also inspired to hear that during this Global Peace Convention the month-long Panagbenga Festival is taking place. Not only does this powerful festival celebrate the season of blossoms, but it also celebrates the rebuilding of Baguio City after the 1990 earthquake. We often associate blooming flowers with rebirth and new beginning. I hope that this gathering can nourish a new start of women’s leadership in building peace.

The need to focus on women’s leadership characteristics

Today, the global community is making progress toward encouraging women’s participation in peacebuilding. In 2000, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security. More than 60 countries, including Uganda, the Philippines, United States, Nigeria, Korea, Paraguay, Japan, and Kenya developed national action plans to include more women in preventing and resolving conflict and sustaining peace.

Although the effort to increase engagement is very important, our focus should not only be limited to the number of women leaders. I invite you to also consider, what are the greatest leadership qualities that women should aspire to cultivate?

Uplifting women’s value as endowed by God

Global Peace Women believes that leaders must first appreciate their own value to understand and respect the value of other people. For this reason, women’s leadership starts with cherishing our innate value as women.

Did any of us choose to be born as a woman or man? None of us chose our identity at birth, but this is our God-given destiny. Both men and women are endowed with intrinsic value by our Creator, and the qualities of each are complementary and essential. The characteristics of women provide an environment where peace can take root and grow on every level.

Yet the world struggles with gender-based violence, human trafficking, and many other social problems because family members and women themselves do not recognize their value. What about us? Do we truly recognize our highest value as a representative of womanhood?

One of Global Peace Women’s priorities is thus to uplift the value of women around the world. For example, GPW Kenya launched a mentorship program for university students and young professionals to work with teenage girls from urban slums. By helping them to understand their value, young women will find the strength to rise above the challenges of drug abuse and teen pregnancy. They will benefit from role models and life skill education to build healthy, successful futures.

Women’s leadership in the family

It is said that women provide a foundation for peace as “The Pillar of the Family.” Daughters are more likely to care for their elderly parents and siblings. Numerous studies have found that, because of their warm emotional support and frequent communication, sisters develop really harmonious relationships with their siblings.

Most importantly, mothers devote themselves to nourish, educate, and raise children from conception. From painful labor and throughout the child’s life, mothers embody a sacrificial heart for the sake of the next generation. I am happy to hear that, already, the girls in this program are gaining self-confidence and respecting themselves more. This understanding of self-respect naturally leads to respecting and appreciating the value of other people. Relating with our family and community members in this way creates the harmonious culture of One Family under God.

In the family–I can use my own children as an example–the girls have very different qualities from the boys. When Mother gets sick or siblings get sick, they come to me and say, ‘Mom, is everything ok? Is there anything I can do?’ Even at 8 or 10 years old, my daughter always brings me medicine. But sons show their love in a very different way. ‘Oh mom, are you sick? I hope you get better soon.’ That’s it, right? But I can still feel their heart. It’s just the way they show their love and caring. So even through raising children, I can definitely see the differences between men and women from a very young age, and I really appreciate the Creator for creating two different genders. He did so because there is an absolute necessity for two different genders, because they complement each other and they absolutely need each other. In raising daughters, I many times feel that the experience she has when she is young, the learning she gets from her mother, will naturally instruct her when she grows and becomes a mother herself, so that even without me telling or teaching her, she innately will have that love for the caring of children.

At her best, a mother is the lifelong source of unconditional love, harmony, and counsel. Together with the father, a mother instills the core values and moral compass in children so that they can make wise decisions, navigate relationships, and contribute to society. Virtuous mothers ensure that global peace begins in the home, one family at a time.

A balanced understanding of women’s leadership

Unfortunately, the public and media often overlook the peacebuilding impact of women leaders in the family. In some cases, women’s contributions in the home are even described as demeaning. Rather than appreciated for the nurturing heart of a daughter, sister, wife, and mother, women’s roles in the family are often disdained. This is because we live in a culture that values career advancement and material gain above all else.

The truth is, the family is the hub and model for all other social relationships. No one can deny that healthy and happy families depend on women’s unconditional love and sacrifice for the family. Peace begins in the home because it is where we learn to trust, respect, and work together with members of our human family. The warm and nurturing family environment that women create is the model for the peaceful world of One Family under God.

Women also play a crucial role as peace educators. For example, GPW Korea initiated a program for unification education in the home. As you may know, the 70-year division between North and South Korea has also divided the hearts and minds of the Korean people. This is a huge challenge to Korea’s unification. Therefore, South Korean mothers in this program try to teach their children at home, whenever they find the chance, that North Koreans share a common heritage and that they are their family members. Women-led education is thus healing the division of the Korean people’s hearts to prepare for Korea’s peaceful unification.

The extended family model for peace

Ultimately, GPW believes that true women leaders should aspire to embrace all human beings as members of their own family. This culture is embodied in the intergenerational extended family model.

My husband, Dr. Hyun Jin Moon, emphasizes the importance of the extended family model in the peacebuilding process in his recently published book, The Korean Dream. He writes,

“The structure of the extended family with its many different roles creates a framework for intergenerational cooperation and a wide variety of relationships through which we can cultivate the best elements of our humanity. These lessons, taken to heart by each new generation raised within the extended family, allow us to relate together with other human beings in a cooperative, peaceful, and cohesive manner, whether in the smallest social unit of the family, or the largest: the global community.”

In order to facilitate this ideal, GPW launched the extended family movement through forums and family festivals in nations such as Uruguay and Nepal. Also in the Philippines, I heard that you have the custom of mano. This is when children greet elders by asking for their hands to receive blessing and wisdom. It is a beautiful expression of intergenerational respect. Just as parents serve their grandparents and grandparents educate and love their grandchildren, we naturally cooperate and help each other harmoniously across generations in the family. We want to replicate this culture in society by relating and cooperating with others like our own family members. Traditions that celebrate these types of extended family relationships create a loving and peaceful environment.

Women’s leadership strengths

For the extended family model to succeed, women’s roles are indispensable. After all, women are natural peacemakers. Mounting evidence shows that women promote peace and security through increasing dialogue, building consensus, and de-escalating tension. Experts say that the 2014 Bangsamoro peace agreement in the Philippines was successful because of women’s leadership. Many Filipinos agree that Ates (older sisters) are less likely to be perceived as threats, and more likely to compromise with empathy and love to achieve common goals. Women legislators are also more likely to prevent the recurrence of conflict by caring for marginalized populations.

Global Peace Foundation’s One Family under God Campaign in Nigeria is a good example of how women strengthen reconciliation. Women from different religious, ethnic, and tribal backgrounds came together to serve the community. These different groups have a history of conflict and tension but women were instrumental in bringing them to understand each other and collaborate. This demonstration of thoughtfulness and warmth shows that women leader’s strength is in creating an environment of harmony and cooperation.

The core of the example above is the culture of selfless service and unconditional love. These traits are essential to women’s efforts in building bridges of peace. To promote this ideal, GPW Paraguay created the Living for the Sake of Others Award to honor service-minded women leaders. For the past 8 years, we have discovered many unsung heroes who are under-appreciated for their devotion to service. By recognizing their merit, GPW Paraguay is encouraging and inspiring more women to follow in their footsteps.

Conclusion

Ladies and gentlemen, I want to remind everyone that the dream of peace requires each of our efforts. For women to fully promote and sustain peace throughout the world, their innate God-given value should be recognized and celebrated on every level. Let us cherish who we are as women, and let us strive to become harmonizers and peacemakers in the family and society. As the Global Peace Women motto states, ‘peace begins in the home.’

I am honored to be among such great women who deeply love God and are dedicated to peace. I hope that you can join with me in committing our hearts, effort, and unique qualities to this noble cause.

May God bless you and your families.

Salamat po. Thank you very much
