Healthy families foster people of character, service-minded leaders, and valuable contributors to peaceful societies. Every person is born into a family. This is where we learn the values that we will carry with us throughout our lives. Strong, thriving societies are built upon vibrant, healthy families.

With this in mind, Global Peace Foundation Brazil’s Family Festival seeks to uplift families by celebrating their achievements, providing a platform for families to inspire each other toward peace, and to create solutions for problems in the community.

“Promoting family values in today’s society is not just a requirement; it is a duty,” said GPF Brazil CEO Massimo Trombin. He described the tremendous pressure the family institution is under, where children first learn important values and build their character.

With these factors in mind, GPF Brazil took the lead in hosting a Family Festival. The first festival was held at a school in the city of Guapo. A local youth band provided music, students won prizes for their academic performance, and families enjoyed theatric plays with family-related themes organized by the students.

The series of festivals strive to bring families together with the support of local schools. In this environment, the community can come together to celebrate the achievements of young people. Additionally, GPF Brazil invites accomplished public service representatives to share inspiration with students and parents.

Several people were awarded at the festival for their contributions to the school and community, including two teachers, one student’s grandfather, and a couple that had donated to the school throughout their twenty years of marriage. The festival was a place to celebrate their financial contributions, which allowed the school to build a new classroom and obtain equipment for information technology.

GPF Brazil plans to continue hosting Family Festivals throughout the year.

The original post appears on Global Peace Foundation. Global Peace Foundation is an international non-sectarian, non-partisan, nonprofit organization, which promotes an innovative, values-based approach to peacebuilding, guided by the vision of One Family under God.

At its founding, the United States was dubbed a “great experiment.” Where most nations were formed out of hundreds or thousands of years of common history, language, culture, etc., the United States showed that it was possible for people from different backgrounds to come together and build a nation on the idea that we are “all created equal.”

At the time, the country was unique in the world, borne out of an effort to build a society based on “the laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” or self-evident, universal principles and values. This is what allowed to bring together people from different histories, cultures, races, religions around the world to become “out of many, one.”

Many had doubts about the feasibility of such a cause at the time. Yet today, nearly two and a half centuries years since the July 4th Declaration of Independence in 1776, America still stands as a symbol of our God-given rights and freedoms.

In trying times, the people of our country need to look back to those founding ideals together. The ideals can be found in the stories, symbols, and songs of the nation. These point back to what we hold most dear and binds us together in common cause. With these lessons in mind, we take time to reflect on the national anthem of the United States of America.

The Star-Spangled Banner Lyrics

By Francis Scott Key 1814

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,

Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,

What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,

In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:

‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,

A home and a country should leave us no more!

Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

***

On July 4th, we take time to reflect on the lessons of the “great experiment” we are all building together in America today.

Memorial Day is commemorated on the last Monday of May in the United States, honoring the sacrifice of the men and women of the armed forces. This year, the United States Military Academy will see its class of 2017 graduate on Memorial Day weekend. As the class moves from training into active duty, they acknowledge the legacy that they are carrying on for the higher purpose and calling that has shaped the United States and its role in the world.

The United States Military Academy Class of 2017 crest and motto, “So Others May Dream.”

It is tradition for every class of the United States Military Academy to commission a crest and motto. These symbols are an expression of the entire class’s pledge to carry on the legacy of the academy. This year, the 2017 class crest and motto goes further to recognize the class’s commitment to carry out their duty, not only for their country, but for the world.

The eagle in their crest is positioned to embrace the world with seven wing tips representing the seven continents of the world and their motto emblazoned on the top, “So others may dream.” Behind the eagle are six stars and seven stripes, acknowledging the link between the current class and the class of 1967, their predecessors from 50 years past.

The 2017 crest and motto reflect the founding values of the United States, to open the way for the world to dream, not just small dreams of economic prosperity, or even democratic freedom, but a dream that speaks to the very essence of humanity, expressed in the Declaration of Independence, to live a life that honors the “inalienable rights” of every person and the source by which it was endowed, the “Creator.”

Memorial Day in the United States is commemorated on the last Monday of May.

This dream has motivated the United States in many pivotal moments in its history. During World War II the United States sent men and women to both the European and Pacific arenas, not only to protect the freedoms of its citizens, but open the way for multiple nations and people to become independent, self-governing and prosperous. During the Korean War, the United States joined the United Nations forces, sending young men and women to serve on shores unknown to preserve the chance for people they never met to dream freely. One can even say that this founding dream prompted the United States to pursue the establishment of the United Nations and subsequent movements like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The graduating class of 2017 will leave with gold rings emblazoned with their class crest and motto. Their rings contain the gold of rings from classes as early as 1914, tangibly signifying the connection between the generations of men and women in the United States armed forces who have sacrificed and worked towards giving substance to the founding dream of the nation that has undergirded its success and defined its leadership in the past and into the future.

The nation was divided. Families were literally torn down the middle, brother against brother, fathers against sons, neighbor against neighbor. Lincoln turned to gratitude to call the nation to unity and to project hope against the carnage of the war.

He called the nation to remember simple bounties of the rising sun and the fruits of the earth that “cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of the Almighty God.”

He asked his fellow citizens to pray for forgiveness for the nation’s vices, comfort for those suffering from the war, and healing for the wounds of the nation.

Today, the United States continues to observe Thanksgiving on the third Thursday of November. In a time of political divides, the nation can take the opportunity to remember with gratitude the legacy secured by those heroes who have worked hard to push forward the vision cast in the Declaration of Independence, and prayerfully ask for forgiveness for its limitations while seeking guidance from the same founding vision.

Below is President Lincoln’s Declaration issued on October 3, 1863:

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies.

To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore.

Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

The Global Peace Leadership Conference 2014 in the United States opened with notable faith leadership from different faith traditions gathering at the nation’s capital to dig into the roots of the nation’s founding principles.

Global Peace Foundation – USA President Alan Inman opened the conference urging leaders to focus on the spiritual heritage of America, rooted in a tradition that values human dignity, rights, freedoms, and responsibilities. “America is ripe for a spiritual great awakening,” he said, “that draws on that heritage to build a just, ethical, yet pluralistic society.”

At welcoming dinner, keynote speaker Dr. Harold Dean Trulear, Associate Professor, Applied Theologand Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at the Howard University School of Divinity, gave a rising call for national renewal. He drew on the biblical example of Ezekiel, a prophet called by God to prophesy to dry bones to restore them to life and vigor.

The Global Peace Foundation wrote, “Ezekiel was being held in captivity in Babylon with leading classes of Israelites, and the prophesy “related to restoration, of something lost, and the result of two things” Dr. Trulear said. “First they have forgotten where they came from, they forgotten their religious roots they forgot that they were a nation formed and chosen uniquely the bring morality to the rest of the world. The second reason is that they have become a nation of blood, who loved killing, who loved violence.”

Global Peace leadership Conference USA delegates go on a special tour of Capitol Hill highlighting the spiritual legacy of the United States of America.

Dr. Trulear suggested that the work of the Global Peace Foundation and of the conference was also the work of renewal and restoration of the faith and values that gave birth to the nation. The conference entitled, “America at a Crossroads: Leading Our Nation to Live Up to Its Founding Ideals,” seeks to address widening social divisions and weakening role of faith and religion in the public square. It will be held from September 19-21 in Arlington, Virginia.

This weekend, the Global Peace Foundation USA will host a seminal leadership conference in Arlington, Virginia entitled “Forging a Consensus on Essential Principles and Shared Values in Today’s Pluralistic Society“ . Influential leaders of faith will gather to seek to articulate universal principles and build consensus on shared values as a foundation for cooperation and a renewed presence of spirituality in the public square.

Below is an excerpt from Dr. Moon’s address at the Global Peace Convention in 2012.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the United States may be the world’s sole remaining superpower, but we need to be clear about where America’s true strength lies. It is not in U.S. military might, greatly stretched in Iraq and now in Afghanistan. Nor is it in America’s geopolitical and economic dominance, now challenged by its debt crisis and questions about its leadership in the Middle East, Asia and the international community.

I believe that America’s true strength lies in its moral authority as a nation rooted in spiritual principles and values which has championed human rights and freedoms at home and abroad. This is a nation with the aspiration to become “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” It was this vision that inspired millions from all corners of the world regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality and religion to make the long and perilous journey to a new nation filled with hope and opportunity. In order for the United States to exercise genuine global leadership in today’s more complex and fragmenting world, it must rekindle that position of true servant leadership, offering its inclusive national promise to the world.

Now more than ever, the United States must look to its unique founding ideals as the basis for a new Renaissance in the 21st century rooted in universally accepted aspirations, principles and values. Just as the European Renaissance gave rise to the Reformation and the Enlightenment and, thereby laid the groundwork for our modern world, a new global movement for change needs to arise, anchored in the past but bringing a fresh, new vision for the future. This is a time for bold leadership, that is guided by a universal aspiration and tied to those time-tested principles and values that form the basis of our common humanity.

In the course of the last century, the United States has been the catalyst for positive global change, challenging European colonial imperialism, and creating international assemblies to foster peace through dialogue and reason. The League of Nations after the First World War, and the United Nations after the Second World War, were created as a result. During the Cold War era, American leadership, and faith in human rights and fundamental freedoms, paved the way for the eventual collapse of totalitarian, communist regimes around the world. The historical role of the United States in shaping, and then leading, the world to where we are today, is undisputed. The question then is what should be America’s role going forward, as we look to this new century and the challenges that it brings.”

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

Distinguished esteemed, honored guests from abroad and from here in Paraguay, I am deeply honored to be here in Paraguay today to speak at this monumental gathering: the 1st International Symposium,“Towards an Alliance between Paraguay and Korea”.

Here, we are seeking to foster unity between two cultures and two beautiful countries that I hold close to my heart: Paraguay and Korea. I want to thank the international participants who have traveled across the world to join us here in this symposium on Paraguay and South Korea relations. Could we give our Korean guests a great round of applause?

And of course, for those Paraguayans who know me, you know I am an adopted son, and I consider this my second home in the American hemisphere. I would like to give all the leadership of Paraguay that are gathered here a round of applause as well.

And finally, I would like to appreciate the monumental and innovative work of IDPPS (Instituto de Desarrollo del Pensamiento Patria Soñada), the Paraguayan think tank, led by the able leadership of Dr. Altamirano.

Although I was born in South Korea, I was raised in the United States. Each time I visit Paraguay, I feel as if I have come back home. I have traveled this country on horseback, in trucks, by boat and by plane. I have ridden with your cowboys, debated with your political and business leaders, and eaten together with the most humble of Paraguayans in the deep Chaco region.

The more time I spend here, the more my heart is moved by your people. I am convinced that this country is truly the “womb” of America from which a great rebirth can arise. It has a unique role to play in this region, for this continent, and this hemisphere.

Many exciting developments are taking place here in Paraguay, and the world is taking notice. This is evidenced by the Organization of American States convening its General Assembly here in Paraguay, which you’ve convened so successfully. Give yourselves a round of applause. I congratulate you for your successful hosting of this major event and urge you to build upon that momentum, leading Paraguay to aspire to even greater dreams and heights.

“We are seeking to foster unity between two cultures and two beautiful countries that I hold close to my heart: Paraguay and Korea.”

Potential of Paraguay

Peace and prosperity cannot be secured in this world without nations that exemplify integrity, good governance, and responsibility, together with respect for the dignity of human beings, fundamental human rights, and the prosperity and the fundamental needs of all its peoples. I believe Paraguay has the potential, because you are a blank slate, to become such a model exhibiting the best practices around the world.

Paraguay has enormous potential to become a central hub in this region in industry, distribution, and professional services, such as banking and accounting as well as the traditional industries of agriculture and recreation. It is strategically located in the heart of South America, surrounded by the largest markets and resource centers in the region. With global concerns for meeting the basic needs of rising populations, Paraguay and this region of Latin America are well-positioned to play a major role.

Paraguay’s land is rich in natural resources, making it well-suited for farming, forestry, conservation, and eco-tourism. This region has abundant minerals and raw materials essential for industry and energy. Furthermore, this region has some of the most beautiful natural vistas, indigenous plant life and unique animal species. Paraguay is truly a blessed nation.

In addition, it is blessed with major waterways that are a natural source of transporting goods from the interior. The country’s ready-access to rivers allows it to generate a growing amount of hydroelectric power making it a prime candidate for industrial development.

Indeed, Paraguay has become one of the largest exporters of electricity in the world. Through the hydrocarbons explorations taking place here, I am sure Paraguay will continue to discover other alternative sources of clean energy. The most important resource, however, lies with its great human resources. The potential is in the Paraguayan people.

I observed the beauty of the Paraguayan people on my 2008 cattle drive in the Chaco. Here, traditional and spiritual values, faith in God, and trust in family and community are still very much alive and are part of your people’s daily lives. This is a key reason why this nation can become a model nation of national transformation. A recent Gallup poll concluded that Paraguayans are the happiest people in the world. Are you? (Applause)

This goes to show that true happiness is not derived solely from material success, but is rooted, once again, in our deep faith in God, in strong families and communities, and in our love of country. Despite the political and economic difficulties this nation has faced, these fundamental intrinsic attributes will enable the Paraguayan people to dream great dreams and will fuel great achievements, I believe, in the near future.

“Paraguay has enormous potential to become a central hub in this region”

Most of all, Paraguay has a large youth population. With the right education, these youths can become the ethical and responsible leaders that can fulfill the Paraguayan Promise.

Developing Paraguay and South Korea Partnerships

Here in South America, Paraguay can become the center of a trading network, linking the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts and becoming a natural conduit between Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and the rest of the hemisphere. However, Paraguay should also look outward beyond this continent. In this age of globalization, international partnerships will accelerate Paraguay’s development.

The key is to find the right partner. It is time for an emerging Paraguay to leave its past isolationism behind and step out and embrace the world by looking across not just the Atlantic, but across the Pacific, in this age of Pan-Pacific Rim. The greatest movements in terms of economic development is going to happen not east, but west, across the Pacific, in the Pan-Pacific Rim. Paraguay needs to have the right partner.

Today’s Symposium is an example of one of the important partnerships for Paraguay’s future. There is great opportunity and strategic value in a relationship between Paraguay and my birth nation of South Korea. That is why we have invited Korean business leaders as well as Korean media. I believe there are reporters from the two top Korean business journals in Korea. Could we have them stand? The reason why they are here is to tell the story of what’s going on in Paraguay.

“The most important resource, lies with its great human resources.”

I hope the discussions you engage in during your time together can open up new opportunities and inspire new possibilities of how these respective nations, and the resources they bring, can help fuel the potential that is Paraguay.

I have written a speech, but I’m going to go off my speech now, because I was impressed by our Paraguayan counterparts, especially with this new administration in terms of the direction they want to think about in development, and, of course, some of the comments that our Korean guests have made. So, I would like to conclude by offering some of my thoughts.

I think for our Korean guests, they should not look at Paraguay as a nation alone, but as one of the nations that make up the region of South America. The value of Paraguay is as a hub, for industrialization, distribution, and all the service fields that support that activity. If you look at Latin America, with the new thrust that this new administration is bringing, building a business-friendly environment, a tax-friendly environment, a trade-friendly environment, it becomes an obvious choice for multi-nationals to build and invest industrial complexes that can service not only the Paraguayan market, but the entire Latin American market. Already what is happening is that a lot of the agricultural industry in Brazil is moving into Paraguay, and so there is actually a greater integration and cooperation on a business level. This goes one step down below trade agreements within this region. There is a greater consolidation that’s actually happening right now, and Paraguay sits in a tremendously opportune and advantageous position.

I hope that, not only our Korean partners but others as well, could recognize that the potential of Paraguay does not come just in its natural resources, natural markets and indigenous markets, but more importantly, as a hub for the entire Latin American market. I think it is going to be obvious when you research how it is like, in terms of the environment, for investment, for business, in terms of taxes and regulations, etc., in its neighboring countries. I would like to emphasize that point.

For the Paraguayans, however, you are on the right track, and I would encourage you and this administration. One of the reasons why I helped to start this think tank was to build a consistent road map so that subsequent administrations will carry on these good policies that will make Paraguay an ongoing partner for investment and development. Then, I believe that by the end of this Cartes administration, this nation is going to be a different nation. I believe that if subsequent administrations carry this road map, Paraguay will far surpass your 2030 Plan.

“Paraguay should also look outward beyond this continent. In this age of globalization, international partnerships will accelerate Paraguay’s development. The key is to find the right partner. “

One of the reasons why Korea is such a good partner for Paraguay is because it is a modern miracle. The nation of Korea transformed itself in 50 years. Within one century, Korea went from a feudal society into a modern industrial state. In terms of the experiences of developed nations of the world today, no nations that I know of have had such an accelerated growth, and have raised the standard of living of its citizens, as Korea has.

One of the things that I’ve noticed as I travel around the world is that many nations are looking for models or precedents to follow. The past-existing paradigm of the Western model of development has been considered to be the European experience or the U.S. experience. But I think now, in the 21st century, the landscape is starting to change. Especially many developing nations are starting to think, “Look at all the problems that those nations are having. Are there other models of development that we should to follow?” I think this is really where Korea can shine.

Korea is the leader in terms of high-technology companies. I know Samsung was mentioned here, and also, one of the top five largest car companies is also in Korea. This is because Korea had a plan in terms of how they wanted to develop, and I think Paraguay can learn tremendously from this experience through building this relationship. You don’t need to go through the basic, unplanned type of growth process that many of the developed Western nations follow. You could have a clear plan, and you can start seeing transformations leap-frogging past the development that other Western nations took.

“Paraguay has a large youth population. With the right education, these youths can become the ethical and responsible leaders that can fulfill the Paraguayan Promise.”

I believe the models that Latin American countries should look to for development is actually in Asia, because that’s where the quickest growth actually came about, and I think Korea is a stellar example of this. And of course, because I’m Korean, and I’m also a Paraguayan, I’m your adopted son, it brings joy to my heart that these two nations are coming together. Paraguay and Latin America has what Korea needs. Korea is a peninsular nation, it’s resource-poor. Latin America is a resource-rich region, but it does not have the industry, the technology, and the professional capabilities that Korea has.

Being a man of faith, I don’t think things happen by chance. I’ve always believed that Paraguay was the “womb” of Latin America. This nation, at one time, was considered the basket case of Latin America. The reason why I came to Paraguay in 2008 was out of crisis. And yet, look how much this nation has changed. I’ve seen this nation go through three administrations, from Nicanor to Cartes. I’ve seen you tackle fundamental issues on whether or not you will be a democratic state or not, and you passed that trial. You stayed true to the principles upon which successful democracies are built: recognition of human rights, recognition of private property; and look where you came to now.

This is an inflection moment in the history of this nation. For all you business leaders gathered here today, this is a time in which you should be acting bold for the sake of this nation Paraguay. To uplift the future of Paraguay and South Korea relations, we must work with our Korean partners, and build a new tomorrow for this nation, your families, and the regions of Latin America.

Thank you very much.

Leading Korean government ministers and private sector leaders said Korea’s postwar model of development holds essential lessons for Paraguay, a nation, like Korea, in the shadow of large and powerful neighbors. Speakers from Korea and Paraguay addressed a landmark International Symposium, “Towards an Alliance between Paraguay and Korea,” in Asunción on June 17, 2014.

Welcoming government and business leaders and film and print media from Korea, Director of Paraguay Institute for Development of Thought Dr. Jose Altamirano encouraged Paraguayan leaders to learn from Korea’s example, a small nation that was devastated by war and crushing poverty, yet has risen in just 50 years to become a prosperous society and world economic power.

Dr. Altamirano noted favorable global economic factors for domestic growth but said, “We are tripping on the same stones. So many projects are left midway. With scarce resources, why not take advantage of a good example?”

Hak Lae Son, former president of Korea Expressway Corporation and the Korea Rail Network Authority, told the forum that with technology developed in Korea, engineers are not only constructing roads and railroads in Korea but in developing countries in Asia, Africa, and South America.

He said the 1968 highway project connecting Seoul, to Busan, Korea’s second largest city, was “a historical project that cost one fourth of the budget of Korean government at that time but has been a foundation for Korea’s economic development.”

Son said that the economy and technology for the highway construction project at that time was much inferior to that in Paraguay today, but it succeeded because of “the dedication of national attention and care.” He called the expansion of infrastructure such as roads, ports and railroads “essential for national competitiveness.”

Former vice minister of Korea’s Ministry of Construction and Transportation and chief of Incheon International Airport Cho Woo Hyun noted that Paraguay has one of the world’s largest hydroelectric power plants, as well as extensive lands for the development of agro and livestock industries.

But he also said it was essential to improve competitiveness by upgrading transportation capacity and reducing the costs of logistics. Expanding highways, railroads, and airport service, he noted, “will not only make all the territory of Paraguay a one-day life zone but also improve the efficiency of its economy and contribute to industrial development.”

The 1968 highway project connecting Seoul, to Busan, Korea’s second largest city, was “a historical project that cost one fourth of the budget of Korean government at that time but has been a foundation for Korea’s economic development.”

Carlos G. Fernández Valdovinos of the Central Bank of Paraguay presented a detailed analysis of challenges and opportunities facing Paraguay in the aftermath of the worst economic crisis in 80 years. Over the past decade, policy frameworks and economic fundamentals have been strengthened, he pointed out. “Government finances are sound, inflation is low, banks are strong, buffers are large, and a flexible exchange rate regime allows financial the sector to be prepared for external pressures.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6528" class="wp-image-6528" title="Carlos G.
Positive outlook

Mr. Valdovinos also noted recent statutory reforms in taxation and fiscal management. “Paraguay experienced eight consecutive years of fiscal surpluses,” he told the forum. “This had allowed the country to decrease its public external debt from more than 50 percent of GDP to less than 10 percent, the lowest percentage among peers.”

Paraguay’s Minister of Planning for Economic and Social Development, José Molinas Vega, gave an upbeat assessment of Paraguay’s economic performance in recent years. Athough Paraguay is a relatively small country, “it is the first exporter of electric energy to a worldwide level, second exporter of stevia, third biggest merchant fleet after USA and China, fourth biggest soy exporter, and eighth biggest meat exporter.”

Mr. Vega moreover, presented realistic projections for development and noted that from 2003 to 2013 poverty had diminished by 50 percent. He argued that Paraguay can eliminate extreme poverty, increase life expectancy, reduce maternal and infant mortality, graduate 95 percent of Paraguay youth and elevate at least one university into world-class center of learning—all by the target date of 2030. Paraguay offers a young workforce, he said, quality raw materials, fertile soil, a strategic location, and cheap and abundant electric energy.

“We would like to use the advantages our workforce offers,” he concluded, “and for that, we are aware that we need to improve infrastructure. We need energy transmission lines, roads and waterways to connect with the world.”

Human potential

Global Peace Foundation Chairman Dr. Hyun Jin Moon expressed his deep respect for Paraguay and his recognition of often unremarked internal qualities that can decisively shape a nation’s destiny. He explained how the Korea development model is an example for Paraguay.

“I have ridden with your cowboys, debated with your political and business leaders, and eaten together with humble families in the Chaco. The more time I spend here, the more my heart is moved by your people. I am convinced that this country . . . has a unique role to play in this region, for this continent and the entire hemisphere.

“This region has abundant minerals and raw materials essential for industry and energy. The most important resource, however, lies with the great human potential of the Paraguayan people. I observed the beauty of the Paraguayan people on the 2008 cattle drive across the Chaco. Here, traditional and spiritual values, faith in God, and trust in family are still very much alive and a part of your people’s daily lives. This is a key reason why this nation can become a model for national transformation.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-6530" class="wp-image-6530" title="Global Peace Foundation chairman Dr. Hyun Jin Moon" src="http://www.hyunjinmoon.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/GPF_chair_Hyun_Jin_Moon.jpg" alt="Global Peace Foundation chairman Dr. Hyun Jin Moon emphasizes the importance of character and vision as the foundation for national transformation. The Global Peace Foundation was a co-sponsor of the symposium.“

A clear national vision, rooted in fundamental spiritual principles and shared moral values, is the essential starting point for national transformation. A solid moral foundation is the basis for building a just society, which is the prerequisite for successful long-term economic growth.

“Paraguay can provide economic development and material prosperity to all its people without compromising the spiritual and moral traditions of this nation and its roots in strong family values.”

The International Symposium, “Towards an Alliance between Paraguay and Korea,” was hosted by the Institute for Development of Thought and Global Peace Foundation Paraguay.

Ground-breaking for a road construction project in Paraguay by the Korean Il Sung Construction company, the first Korea-Paraguay development initiative, is scheduled for June 18, and a railroad feasibility study by the Korea Rail Network Authority has been completed and presented to the Paraguayan Ministry of National Development and is under review.

Volunteers from the Global Peace Foundation – Paraguay, Lions Club, local schools and the Paraguayan Army held a daylong Artistic Marathon to collect supplies for flood-stricken regions in Alto Paraguay. The event featured 300 students from 11 different schools in the area. Throughout the day, volunteers approached locals and surrounding residents for donations of clothing, toiletries, and non-perishable items.

Alto Paraguay has experienced constant flooding since the beginning of the year. Thousands of people have lost their homes. Roads have been damaged and construction projects have been stalled. Many parts the already remote regions of Alto Paraguay have become inaccessible. Indigenous families, who make up the majority of the population in the most remote areas of Alto Paraguay, have been particularly hard hit. They have lacked basic supplies like clean water and food.

An Army truck that the Paraguayan Army donated for the particular service project, delivered the supplies to families in Remancito, Puerto Falcón, and Bo. Del Niño Asentamiento of Hayes Village. This was one of many relief efforts that Global Peace Foundation-Paraguay has been involved in.

When Dr. Moon established the Global Peace Foundation in 2009, he introduced service as a means to an end. Not merely as an activity or program.

Service taps into human creativity and new partnerships.

Service opens unexplored solutions to long-standing problems.

Service transforms relationships

Service builds a global ethic based on universal values like altruism.

The response from the volunteers of the day of service illustrates that service is not merely an activity, but a tool for transformation. During a ceremony that recognized their service, volunteers from the supply-drive expressed their commitment to serve again with the Global Peace Foundation. Another volunteer described how serving helped him feel connected to the families struggling to recover from the flooding. The initiative also forged meaningful relationships with organizations like the Paraguay Army, the Lions Club of Haiyan Village, and the local schools to support ongoing volunteer efforts.

Their testimonies demonstrate that service is a tool for long-term development and peacebuilding.
