The Global Peace Foundation was founded by Dr. Hyun Jin Moon to promote a compelling vision of peace based on universal principles and values shared by all the world’s great religious and cultural traditions. The Global Peace Foundation and its ever expanding network of leaders and partners are advancing global efforts to develop a new paradigm for peace based on the vision of one family under God.

As Global Peace Foundation International President, Jim Flynn wrote in his New Year’s Message, in light of today’s challenges, “a vision that points toward a shared future based on our common humanity…is more compelling and relevant than ever before.”

2014 set many milestones for the Global Peace Foundation as outlined in President Flynn’s New Year’s Message. Thank you to the partners and supporters of the Global Peace Foundation. May 2015 be full of more significant advances to peace.

Below is the full letter published originally on globalpeace.org

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I wanted to write to you as we open this new year of 2015 and pray for success in all your endeavors in the coming year.

As we reflect on events of 2014, it seems that the challenges facing our diverse and disparate global community grow ever more daunting. Yet such challenges also push us to find the deeper basis of our interconnectedness. Thus, today, a vision that points toward a shared future based on our common humanity – as expressed in the simple yet profound phrase “one family under God” – is more compelling and relevant than ever before.

Like you I am profoundly disturbed by polarizing divisions that can diminish our confidence in a future of peace and shared prosperity. Extremists distort religious precepts to justify unspeakable acts of inhumanity against innocent people. Political passions have boiled over, leaving little capacity or incentive for partisans to bridge divisions for the common good. The Ebola epidemic has again underscored the special vulnerability of Africa and the disproportionate burden of suffering that Africans have borne in modern times.

Interfaith leaders from Nigeria and Ireland discuss best-practices of cross-community engagement.

Yet in the midst of such dire problems is also hope, found in the legions of men and women everywhere whose lives manifest the noble qualities of the human spirit. They are people of integrity on every continent, in every culture and faith tradition, who live for the greater good and strive to uplift the dignity of all. They are found among us, and among our friends and colleagues; though they may speak different languages, they share a passion for peace and resonate with the essential perspective that we all belong to the one human family with a common spiritual heritage.

The examples are many. This past year I was honored to join Nigerian Muslim and Christian leaders who came to Northern Ireland to examine the lessons learned in ending 30 years of armed conflict between Catholic and Protestant factions, and to confer on building social cohesion during a time of turmoil and violence in Nigeria.

Governor Marlene Ocampos receives the Global Peace Award during the Global Peace Convention 2014.

Through our Global Peace Leadership Conference in New Delhi last year, we saw a moving example of India’s diverse faith leaders coming together on the deepest levels, affirming that “Truth is one, although the wise call it by many names.” At our 2014 Convention in Paraguay, we met champions of national transformation like GPF’s social impact coordinator, Marlene Ocampos, who won the governorship of Alto Paraguay, the country’s poorest state, based on her record of service to the people and commitment to utilize the instruments of government solely in the public interest.

And I was deeply encouraged by the promise of a rising generation when I addressed young professionals on the importance of moral and innovative leadership at the International Young Leaders Assembly at the United Nations in New York.

Young leaders at the International Youth Leaders Assembly at the United Nations.

Our work to promote universal shared values as the foundation for peace, to cultivate healthy families and communities that nurture positive qualities of character, and to advance a culture of service, is still young. But it is vigorous and growing, and drawing new energy and inspiration from you, our partners and stakeholders.

This new year will no doubt bring us both expected and unexpected challenges. But we are certainly gaining ground, despite the potent forces that foment hatred and division, especially as we work together with shared vision and common purpose to uplift the entire human family.

We greatly appreciate your endeavors and contributions for the noble cause for peace. We look forward to a new year filled with renewed commitment, redoubled efforts and productive collaboration as we continue our work together.

Best wishes to you and your family for a peaceful and prosperous new year.

Remarks by: James P. Flynn, International President, Global Peace Foundation

Your excellencies, honored guests, IYLA participants, ladies and gentlemen:

Let me begin by appreciating the distinguished panel for contributing their insights and inspiration to this important session. Also special thanks to the Paraguay Mission for serving as the lead sponsor for this UN forum, along with the Permanent Missions of 23 other nations. The Global Peace Foundation is proud to join with our partners in collaborating on this forum and in convening the IYLA program each year.

Also I would like to especially appreciate all of the participants of the International Young Leaders Assembly 2014, representing nearly 70 nations. The fact that you are here, investing your time, energy and focus, addressing important issues facing our world today, is indicative of a quality of character vitally needed if we are to build a better future. Simply put, I believe that you are here because you care, because you want to make a positive difference, and because you are ready to take action for the greater good.

Global Peace Foundation International President Jim Flynn addresses 500 young leaders at the International Young Leaders Assembly at the United Nations.

It is most significant that the culminating sessions of this IYLA are here at the United Nations, the pre-eminent global institution dedicated to building peace. In the nearly 70 years since its founding, the UN has expended tremendous effort and resources in the cause of peace and security for all nations. Despite such dedicated efforts, tragically our world is still plagued by conflict, corruption, and poverty.

Clearly no one institution alone, no matter how comprehensive its scope, can solve the fundamental problems of the human situation. It will take all of us as global citizens, working together in common cause, to transform our world. That is why it is meaningful that you as young leaders are here to discuss, engage, and aspire together to make a difference.

As we all know, our world has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Technology and globalization are impacting the lives of people everywhere, driving change at a breathtaking pace. It is remarkable to note, for example, that this year the number of cell phones globally will reach 7.3 billion, exceeding the world’s total population. We can communicate, transact and travel with an ease previously unimaginable.

Yet with the great promise of this 21st century, we continue to face dire realities and ominous challenges, on every continent. Consider that:

• The BBC reports that every minute, two people are killed in conflicts around the world.
• According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day due to poverty. That means a child dies every 4 seconds.

Our most pressing challenge today is an ethical one. Our technology can gather massive data on our browsing habits and consumer preferences, but cannot help us to understand each other, respect each other, or forgive each other. General Omar Bradley most aptly described the dilemma we face, when he said:

Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living. We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount.

We are faced with a significant gap between our external development and our ethical maturity. Technology has driven rapid development, but itself is value neutral. It can be used to improve the quality of life and well-being for all people, but can also be used for weapons of mass destruction. We are in dire need of ethical leadership, leadership with moral authority, because we are seriously limited by a values deficit, a debilitating shortfall in values that hampers our ability to realize the promise of the 21st century.

Great transformative leaders of the 20th century – Gandhi, King, Mandela – were such persons of moral authority. Of the importance of values, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said “this is a moral universe, and there are moral laws of the universe just as abiding as the physical laws.”

Notably, Mahatma Gandhi described the interconnection of thought, action, and values, when he said:
Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.

The theme of this forum is quite meaningful: “Moral and Innovative Leadership: Vision, Service and Entrepreneurship.” This unique juxtaposition – moral and innovative leadership – we believe encapsulates the leadership qualities needed for our time. A moral leader is guided by an ethical framework rooted in universal principles and shared values. A moral leader has integrity, and is committed to advance the greater good before self-interest. To quote the GPF Chairman, Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon, who first introduced the framework of moral and innovative leadership in 2010:

“Moral leadership is more precious for the future of a nation than gold, diamonds, or oil. It is guided by a common vision that reflects the most fundamental human aspirations, conforms to the universal spiritual principles that govern human life, and is expressed in shared moral values that can ultimately form a global ethic. On the foundation of a solid ethical framework, innovative leadership can tap the wellspring of innate human creativity, ingenuity, and the power of innovation so that they could be channeled to address even the most intractable social problems.”

“Let a noble vision guide your steps.” GPF president Jim Flynn urges young leaders to reach for a purpose that benefits all humanity.

Globalization has brought us into close contact and interaction with people quite different from ourselves. While that affords us a rich opportunity, it also could lead to more serious identity-based conflicts. When such conflicts are framed in religious terms, fueled by extremist interpretations, and rapidly connected through worldwide networks, then the threats immediately have global implications. As the current situations in Iraq and Gaza remind us in jarring detail, a global consensus is urgently needed that uplifts the essence of our common humanity, affirming the universal values necessary for a diverse world of freedom and peace.

It is our conviction that all people – regardless of race, religion, ethnicity or station in life – share a common essence and heritage – our “humanness” extends beyond even our most pronounced external differences. We are all part of the one human family. And we are one family because we all share a common origin, the Creator God. Thus we at the Global Peace Foundation believe that a simple yet powerful vision statement that can inspire our common effort to build a world of sustainable peace – is One Family under God.

The essence of our humanity, individually and collectively – and the essence of life itself – is intangible, and, we could say, spiritual in nature. We naturally and intuitively recognize that every person has value, has worth. That is why we make great efforts to save even one human life. Our value as human beings is imbued in us by the Creator. That, I believe, is a universal spiritual truth, not a religious statement or doctrine.

That innate spirituality is what the Dalai Lama calls our “humanitarian” nature. It is reflected in the words of then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan when he said “In the 21st century, I believe the mission of the United Nations will be defined by a new, more profound awareness of the sanctity and dignity of every human life, regardless of race or religion.”

More than political, economic or military power, the power that can transform our world is the power of the human spirit. It is the human spirit that aspires to greatness, that can overcome even the most serious obstacles, and calls forth the noble qualities of our character.

If you adopt the framework of moral and innovative leadership, you are choosing to guide your path by the compass of time-honored truths, while you make full use of the tools of the 21st century. You can be leaders with integrity, who at the same time engage with personal and collective creativity to develop innovative solutions for our challenged world.

Let a noble vision guide your steps. Place your motivation on the highest plane. Tap your entrepreneurial and innovative spirit to dream big and act big – to build a world free of conflict and corruption, free of poverty and disease, and filled with opportunity and well-being for every member of the global human family.

Again we are grateful to the Paraguay Mission and co-sponsoring missions here at the United Nations, for hosting this very meaningful Assembly.
Thank you for your kind attention.

Dos Santo, Ambassador of PM of Paraguay to the UN, and H.E. Mr Desra Percaya, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of PM of Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations.

In his address at the International Young Leaders Assembly at the United Nations, hosted by the Permanent Mission of Paraguay, Global Peace Foundation President, Mr. Jim Flynn told the young leaders, “Leadership in the 21st Century must begin as moral leadership.”

Moral principles and values are as important as diplomacy, governance, economic development and advances in technology are for human progress.

Conflict resolution, ethical societies and solutions to the world’s biggest economic and health problems have been motivated by compassion, respect for others, empathy, forgiveness, and integrity. These are not qualities that can be mandated by policy or bought by currency; they emerge from the heart and spirit of humanity. They are values that translate across religion, ethnicity, nationality and race.

Mr. Flynn pointed out, “Our greatest challenge is an ethical challenge.”

The previous day, IYLA participants visited the World Trade Center memorial. The hallow footprints are a somber reminder of humanity’s delicate state. And, they are a call to the great religious traditions and people of conscious for a common spiritual vision and a renewal of ethics upon which peace can be secured.

The time is ripe for a spiritual awakening spearheaded by moral leaders who transcend traditional barriers and own the vision of a world where every human being lives with dignity and peace.

The Global Peace Foundation announced the appointment of Mr. James P. Flynn as the new international President at a meeting of senior leadership in Seattle on February 25. Outgoing Global Peace Foundation’s President Young Jun Kim has been named Senior Vice President and will focus on family education initiatives and organizational development. As Global Peace Foundation’s President, Mr. Flynn will oversee educational, peace-building, and human development initiatives in 15 nations. Mr. Flynn will also guide organizational partnerships with national and regional governments, faith-based organizations, and volunteer and philanthropic groups to advance objectives in Global Peace Foundation’s focus areas of building interfaith partnerships, strengthening families and communities, and promoting a culture of service and peace. Mr. Flynn has more than 25 years experience in the development and management of educational and service projects in the non-profit sector, including operations, grant writing and grant management, and program design and implementation. He previously served as Global Peace Foundation’s Senior Vice President with responsibilities for Global Peace Foundation educational programs worldwide. Prior to his executive experience at Global Peace Foundation, Mr. Flynn served as the president of the American Family Coalition, a grassroots educational organization with chapters in all 50 states advocating the promotion of family-friendly public policies. He previously worked as an adjunct professor for the State of Colorado’s Community Colleges system, focused on the design and delivery of business applications training. Mr. Flynn is a co-founder of Street-Smart Inc. a nationally recognized non-profit organization serving at-risk youth in Denver, Colorado, and served on the Supervisory Committee of the Denver Community Development Credit Union. Global Peace Foundation Vice President and Board member Dr. Charles Phillips said the appointment of Mr. Flynn reflects the growing importance of values-based education, service training, and collaboration among the world’s faith traditions in realizing peace.“Ethnic and religious divisions continue to exacerbate conflict and undermine opportunities in an increasingly integrated global community,” Dr. Phillips said. “Having worked closely with Jim Flynn for more than a decade, I am enthusiastic about this appointment. Not only is he a consummate program manager, he thinks big, acts big, and expects big results. I believe Global Peace Foundation can play a transformational role in redefining what is believed possible in bringing peace among peoples and nations.”Global Peace Foundation also announced the appointment of Dr. Tony Devine as Global Peace Foundation Vice President. Dr. Devine will oversee Character and Creativity education initiatives in Kenya and the United States, as well as educational projects in partnership with governments in the Philippines, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia, and Paraguay. This announcement was originally posted on www.globalpeace.org.
