At the 2025 Korean Dream Hangang Festa held along Seoul’s Han River—a timeless symbol of the Korean people’s resilience, unity, and hope—Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon delivered a visionary keynote commemorating Korea’s 80th National Liberation Day. Speaking before a national and global audience, Dr. Moon affirmed the Korean people’s historic mission to realize the Korean Dream: to build a nation that lives for the benefit of humanity. Emphasizing the power of the people, Dr. Moon called upon every Korean citizen to awaken to their shared responsibility in shaping the nation’s destiny. He emphasized that the strength to achieve peaceful reunification lies not solely in governments, but in the collective will, moral courage, and unity of the Korean people. Through the One Korea Global Campaign, he invited citizens, leaders, and young people from around the world to stand together in advancing a new era of hope and purpose for a unified Korea—one that contributes to peace and prosperity in the world.

I’m at the International Forum for One Korea.

If I counted, I would have to use two hands, maybe three to keep track of the number of times I heard that Korea is the place of miracles.

One in particular mentioned is the “Miracle of the Han River.”

In 50 years, from the end of the Korean War to the early 2000s, Korea went through unprecedented economic growth, technological development, and improvements in life expectancy and child mortality. By 2010, Korea entered the ranks of G20 nations. Today it is ranked number 13 among the economies of the world and is the only nation that has turned from an aid-recipient to an aid-giving nation.

My first time in Korea was a year after the Seoul Olympics in 1989. It was starkly different. Many of the skyscrapers that you see in Seoul today were either not even imagined or in the process of being built. The streets felt empty after the flurry of Olympic hype. I remember people selling leftover merch at subway entrances.

Today, I sat in one of the newer edifices, one of many that now line the Han River, hearing the call for the next Korean miracle.

Poetically, the forum was held in Yeido, an island nestled in the middle of the Han River and a financial and governing hub of Korea. Would I call it the start of the next Han River miracle?

Hon. Myung Su Lee commented on this serendipity, adding his observation that the Han River flows powerfully and peacefully because the waters run in the same direction.

What the Korean Dream movement, what Action for Korea United is doing, what Dr. Moon sparked when he wrote out the Korean Dream, is to set a point that allows us to look towards and move together.

I saw the power of a shared vision at work during the economic panel at the conference. As the panel of economists and scholars from diverse perspectives and approaches grappled with how possibly economic cooperation could contribute to reunification and regional peace, words were repeated—unity, humanity, peace, and vision. The situation in Korea is hard, the issues are complicated—the human rights crisis in North Korea, nuclear proliferation, the fraying social fabric, dropping birth rates and soaring unemployment in the South, but I learned that in crisis, you start by asking, “Where do we want to go?”

Dr. Moon outlined the “challenges,” that are set before Korea today: resolving the division of their homeland and rediscovering and reconnecting to their identity and destiny. It makes sense to start with fixing eyes upon a vision that speaks across time, that has propelled the Korean miracles to date. Dr. Moon is calling for such a sea change—but it takes each of us—yes, I’m getting behind the Korean Dream as well, to go in the same direction.

Korea is the land of miracles.

Hon. Seung Joo Baek, President of the War Memorial of Korea, listed a few:

Regaining sovereignty at the close of World War II

The unparalleled economic growth over the last 50 years,

And the Miracle of democratization.

I think I am witnessing the next Korean Miracle—Miracle of the Han 2.0?—unfolding before my eyes. If the waters can flow together.

Below is a short summary of the series for our English-language readers as well as links to the original Korean articles.

The first article provides a summary profile of Dr. Moon and his global initiatives, including the founding of the Global Peace Foundation, a leader in the current civil society-led Korean Dream movement working for Korean reunification. “Korean Dream” is a term coined by Dr. Moon in 2011 as the vision established at the founding of the Korean nation to build a model nation that can benefit all humanity.

The second article features a question and answer section that explores Dr. Moon’s perspectives on the current political crisis in South Korea and his vision for its resolution through a civil society movement focused on Korean reunification.

Dr. Moon commented on the turmoil surrounding South Korean politics, created not only by President Yoon’s declaration of martial law in late 2024 but by the partisan politics that precipitated it as well as followed in its wake. Despite the current challenges in South Korea, Dr. Moon is optimistic and sees his grassroots, citizen-driven Korean Dream movement as critical to bringing about positive change on the Korean peninsula.

Dr. Moon expressly encouraged youth participation in the Korean Dream movement in its activities and programs. While historical discussions have often focused on the cost of reunification, such as those borne by West Germany following German unification, Dr. Moon emphasizes instead the significant opportunities and prosperity that a peaceful, free, and united Korea would attract to the region as a whole.

Rather than portraying reunification as a distant future possibility, Dr. Moon stresses that historical change often occurs unexpectedly and calls upon people from all walks of life to actively participate in making history. In particular, he spoke on the current “Korean Dream 10 Million Unification March” which is to be held on the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation this year. He commented, “We are preparing to make it a day of celebration not only for Koreans but also for the whole world.”

On September 21, 2024, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) celebrated the International Day of Peace with impactful events around the globe, uniting diverse communities with the shared goal of fostering a culture of peace. This year’s theme, “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” resonated deeply at various gatherings, emphasizing the importance of universal shared values as essential for human development and well-being.

GPF India: A Gathering in Ziro

The main celebration in India took place in the picturesque town of Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh, organized in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University (IGTAMSU). The event commenced with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, followed by a peaceful prayer symbolizing the spirit of unity and hope. Cultural performances, including the Saraswati Vandana, reinforced the event’s message that peace is not merely a concept but a lived experience, akin to a prayer.

GPF Nigeria: Promoting Coexistence in Niger State

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, GPF commemorated the International Day of Peace with a one-day awareness campaign in the Agaie Local Government Area, Niger State. This event aimed to promote peaceful coexistence among diverse ethnic and religious communities, building on previous initiatives in the nearby Lapai area. Key community leaders spoke passionately about the critical role of peace in socio-economic development, highlighting the need for respect, tolerance, and cooperation.

The event featured local student performances and messages from law enforcement representatives, showcasing a collective commitment to fostering unity and harmony within the community.

GPF Japan: Peace Design Forums for Unity

In Japan, the Global Peace Foundation has been conducting regular Peace Design Forums, bringing together individuals from different nationalities and cultures living in the country. The most recent forum, held on September 21, 2024, celebrated the International Day of Peace with presentations on peacebuilding efforts from around the world. These forums serve as a vital platform for dialogue and collaboration, reinforcing the idea that peace transcends borders and is a collective responsibility.

Youth Engagement and Global Collaboration

In a vibrant display of youthful energy, GPF India also celebrated International Youth Day on August 12, 2024, under the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.” This event brought together young changemakers and seasoned experts to explore how digital innovation can drive sustainability and peacebuilding.

Additionally, GPF Nepal and Global Peace Women (GPW) Nepal joined forces on September 18, 2024, to cultivate the mindsets of young people from Nepal and India through a workshop focused on the Korean Dream Campaign and the foundational idea that peace begins in the home.

In Brazil, the celebration included a youth sports competition as part of the GPF Shalom project. This project aims to instill values of peace and cooperation in young Brazilians and further expand the global network of peace initiatives.

A Collective Vision for Peace

The International Day of Peace 2024 served as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to cultivate a culture of peace. Through the collaborative efforts of Global Peace Foundation and its partners worldwide, communities are coming together to build bridges of understanding, empathy, and respect. As we move forward, the vision articulated by leaders across these celebrations—of a harmonious world rooted in peace—remains a guiding principle for our collective journey as One Family under God.

“2023 Korean Dream Festa for Korea United” kicked off in Seoul

On the afternoon of October 3rd, the 2023 “Korean Dream Festa for Korea United” was held in Yeouido Park in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul with over 20,000 participants. This was a large-scale unification vision festival held to commemorate the Korean National Foundation Day. This event was held with the aim of realizing a new unified Korean nation, which can contribute to world peace based on Korea’s founding vision of Hongik Ingan (to be “of benefit to all humanity”).

Although it was the last day of the Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holiday season, tens of thousands of citizens were on site before the event began. They enjoyed performances such as the K-Dance Festa and the Taekwondo Flash Mob, which included over 1,000 youth participants. An official from the Korean Dream 10 Million Campaign committee observed, “It’s been four generations since Korea’s liberation, and now many young people believe that unification is not necessary. In comparison with the older generation, awareness about the necessity and importance of unification is low.” He added, “In order to raise awareness of the importance of unification, we have prepared a number of programs for young people to participate in.” An official from the Taekwondoship said, “Just as the Hwarang (an elite warrior group of male youth in ancient Silla kingdom) spirit was important in unifying the Three Kingdoms, the Taekwondo spirit can also play a major role in unifying North and South Korea. My hope is that if everyone understood the spirit of Taekwondo, we would come together as one and unification would be achieved as soon as possible.”

The event included congratulatory speeches from dignitaries such as Dr. Chan Il Ahn, the Co-Chair of Action for Korea United. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon, Chairman of Global Peace Foundation. During the program, citizens recited a declaration for unification and sang the Korean traditional song, “We Wish for Unification.”

At the Korean Dream Mansei event, participants cheered waving the Korean flag as well as flags bearing the message “Korean Dream: One Korea through People Power.” One participant, Chun Hee Park (76) shared, “When I left my house today – even though it is National Foundation Day – I didn’t see many houses with the Korean flag in their windows and I felt we have lost our sense of patriotism and aspirations for unification. I’m glad that it’s now time for many people to gather together, feel pride in our country, and rekindle our desire for unification.” Another participant, Sung Jeong Cho (49), expressed, “Instead of leaving the issue of unification to the government, I thought: I should think about what I can do.”

The organizing committee consisted of 8 organizations including: Action for Korea United, the Korean Senior Citizens Association, Korean National Police Veterans Association, Federation of Artistic and Cultural Organizations of Korea, 10 Million Divided Korean Families Association, Korea Cluppy Association, Korea Freedom Federation, and Leaders’ Alliance for Korea Unification. This event was sponsored by the Global Peace Foundation, the South Korean Ministry of Unification, Peaceful Unification Advisory Council, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and Taekwonship. The 2023 Korean Dream Festa for Korea United kicked off in Seoul on October 3rd with similar events to be held in Gyeongnam on the 7th; Daejeon and Busan on the 9th; Chungnam and Gwangju on the 14th; Jeonbuk on the 22nd; and Daegu on the 28th. A total of more than 100,000 citizens are expected to participate in the nationwide events.

The 2023 Korea Dream Festa for Korea United is but a part of the larger 2025 Korea Dream 10 Million Campaign. This is a Korean citizen-led grassroots unification campaign that aims to achieve peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula. The program will culminate in the 80th anniversary of Korean independence on August 15th, 2025. Just as 2 million people participated in the first “March 1st Movement” more than 100 years ago in 1919, the “Second March 1st Movement” would aim to engage 10 million people in 2025.

Based on the vision of the Korean Dream to build a model nation that would benefit all people, the campaign strives to build local and international support for unification of the Korean peninsula. As such, organizers are working to engage 100,000 people in 2023 with plans for 1 million participants in 2024 and 10 million people in 2025. To this end, organizers are planning the following:

10 million Citizens March Campaign

DMZ One K Global Peace Concert

DMZ Korea Dream: 1 Million National March and Bicycle Tour

Korea Dream Volunteer Grand Festival

5 Million Diaspora Koreans’ Korean Liberation Day Celebration

Along with these various domestic programs, there is an overseas campaign underway to raise global awareness of the larger unification movement. The Korean Dream Eurasia Tour was launched in March 2022 and has spread the Korean Dream vision across 85 cities in 29 countries over a period of 137 days.

“Aju” means “I will be the Owner”

At the 2023 Korean Dream Festa for Korea United, the keynote speech by Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon, International Chairman of Global Peace Foundation, was delivered in an unusual manner. Dr. Moon did not go up to the podium and read a prepared speech, but rather gave an impromptu address. He spoke while walking among the participants, making eye contact with them, and encouraging them to respond with the word, “Aju” (A word that means “I will become the owner.”).

Chairman Moon emphasized that the most important thing for the unification movement is spirit of ownership and the spirit of “Aju.” In order to achieve unification, it is not the government or political leaders that should take the lead, but rather individual citizens who desire unification and the spirit of an owner to work for unification. Chairman Moon explained, “When I began this movement for unification, I explained to many top leaders, “I’m going to create a movement for unification rooted in the Korean people. A grassroots, bottom-up movement.” Nobody believed it was possible. They told me of the hyper-partisan divide between left and right, the religious divide between Christians, Buddhists and indigenous religions, various factions and groups in South Korea. […] Yet, this gathering here today is a testimony that dreams can really come true, that the impossible can be possible if we have a vision and a dream that we can share.”

Chairman Moon emphasized the importance of the spirit of Hongik Ingan, which means to “benefit all humanity,” and encouraged participants to start change from within and then work to make others aware of the importance of unification. “The most important thing in this grassroots movement for unification is the ownership over the Korean Dream vision by the Korean people themselves. If you become the owner and through whatever foundation you have, you spread this message and wake other Koreans up, then this will grow like wildfire.”

Chairman Moon, who delivered his speech in English, also emphasized the importance of global support for the Korean Dream. Chairman Moon explained, “If we were to achieve North and South Korean unification, can we do it alone with our own power? So, if I were to especially only speak in Korean about Korean unification, how can we have foreigners listen and how can we inspire foreigners to help us to be a part of this movement? That is why I use English. […] The Korean Dream is not just a dream to inspire Koreans; it can inspire the entire world.”

By Lee Hyo-Jin

‘2025 Korean Dream 10 million campaign’ underway

On Tuesday afternoon, Yeouido Park in Seoul was filled with crowds rallying for the unification of the two Koreas, in a major event held to raise public awareness about the “Korean Dream 10 Million” initiative launched by eight civic organizations.

Around 20,000 people from different age groups participated in the ceremony hosted by eight local civic groups promoting Korean unification, including Korea Senior Citizens Association, the Korea Freedom Foundation, the Korea National Police Veterans Association, as well as Action for Korea United (AKU), according to event organizers.

Established in 2012, the AKU is a coalition of more than 800 civic, religious, humanitarian and non-profit organizations that focuses on North Korean issues and support the peaceful unification of the two Koreas.

The rally followed the “International Forum on One Korea” held the previous day, also in Yeouido, western Seoul.

Among the guests of the event were Kim Yong-in, head of the Korea National Police Veterans Association, Ahn Chan-il, co-chairman of AKU and Yoo Ja-hyo, head of the Society of Korean Poets.

“Through the Korean Dream, we will be able to achieve a glorious day not only for the Korean Peninsula but also for Northeast Asia and beyond, ultimately realizing world peace,” Kim said in his opening speech.

“Many North Korean defectors are here at today’s gathering, and our North Korean defectors are working towards the freedom of North Korean residents. I firmly believe that we will be able to put an end to the North Korean regime in two years and hold a unification ceremony in Pyongyang,” Ahn said in his speech. Ahn, who also heads the World Institute for North Korea Studies, is a vocal proponent of North Korean human rights.

Yoo said that the division that has lasted for some eight decades cannot separate the Korean people.

“We were originally from the same roots, so the unification of the two Koreas is a natural course of events,” he said.

In his keynote speech, Hyun Jin Preston Moon, the founder and chairman of the Global Peace Foundation (GPF), stressed the significance of the rally being held on National Foundation Day, which falls on Oct. 3.

“Foundation Day represents the opening of heaven, a timing in which humanity can realize the very principles and values. This day has tremendously special meaning for the Korean people,” he said.

“The most important thing for unification is ownership over identity. National Foundation Day is a holiday also celebrated in North Korea. It is the identity that will bring the Korean people together.”

Moon underscored that the unification movement is a campaign led not only by government officials or politicians but by the general public. He added that the campaign will gather the voices of not only South Koreans but also those of the Korean diaspora overseas and also the people of North Korea.

He has been campaigning for Korean unification based on the founding ideal of Korea “Hongik Ingan,” which is about living for the greater benefit of all humanity.

As a part of his activities, he introduced the “Korean Dream” framework which aims to achieve the unification of the two Koreas and create a common national identity. The initiative is based on the notion that feasible progress on unification will be made by grassroots movements of ordinary people, rather than top-down decisions by policymakers.

Against this backdrop, the Korean Dream 10 million campaign organizing committee was launched with the goal of gathering 10 million people in Korea and overseas promoting unification by 2025. That year will mark the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule that ended in 1945.

And the “10 million Korean Dream campaign organizing committee” was inaugurated through the “2022 Action for Korea United Festival” last year.

The civic groups now plan to hold various events promoting its vision not only in South Korea, but also in other countries in six continents to engage global support for a unified Korea.

Boosting the Korean Dream by empowering the young generation

To realize the Korean Dream project, securing support from the broader population ― especially the young generation ― is critical for campaign organizers. So they are seeking to garner support from young people through the medium of pop culture.

Tuesday’s event featured performances by singers including trot singer Song Ga-in, who rose to stardom through the singing competition show “Miss Trot” in 2019. Also on the stage were singers Jo Myung-seop, An Sung-joon, Kim Da-hyun and Kim Soo-chan.

The Rainbow Choir, made up of children from multicultural backgrounds, also performed the song, “Beautiful Country.”

Before the main event, a K-pop dance contest for teenagers took place, highlighting the foundation’s efforts to encourage the unification movement by empowering young people. A Taekwondo demonstration performance involving some 1,000 teenagers from across the nation was also held during the event, while a photo exhibition raising awareness about human rights issues in North Korea was set up at the venue.

This means connecting people across race, nationality, religion, and social divides to recognize shared values and invest in a future together. This is what it means to really embody the vision of One Family under God. A project by GPF India called the SMILE program demonstrates this peacebuilding model. By providing a platform for youth to break past traditional identities of religion and caste, the program helps them affirm their common humanity through education and engaging group activities.

In June, GPF India brought together twenty-three underprivileged children from the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Learning Center and provided them with an opportunity to visit the renowned National Science Centre in New Delhi. The field trip aimed to broaden their horizons and spark curiosity about science and technology.

The Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Learning Center, located in Karawal Nagar, a low-income neighborhood, caters to children who face socio-economic challenges. Many of them come from families that struggle to make ends meet. The center strives to provide quality education and holistic development opportunities to empower young minds and brighten their future.

Accompanied by teachers and volunteers, the enthusiastic group embarked on a journey of exploration and discovery at the National Science Centre. The museum, known for its interactive exhibits and engaging displays, proved to be an ideal platform for these kids to delve into the fascinating world of science.

The students eagerly participated in various hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations, gaining valuable insights into scientific principles. From learning about space exploration and astronomy to discovering the wonders of physics and biology, the young visitors were captivated by the immersive learning experiences offered by the museum.

It was their first time stepping into a science museum of this magnitude. Their eyes sparkled with excitement as they explored the exhibits and experimented with the interactive displays. The field trip not only provided them with exposure to a world beyond their immediate surroundings but also instilled a sense of wonder and ignited their passion for learning.

GPF India was grateful to partner with the National Science Centre to provide such an immersive experience for the students. Such experiences play a vital role in shaping the educational journey of the underprivileged, exposing them to new possibilities and inspiring them to dream big.

This heartening initiative serves as a reminder of the power of education and community support in creating equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. By nurturing curiosity and expanding our horizons, we pave the way for a brighter future where every child can realize their full potential.

The SMILE Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Learning Center hopes to continue collaborating with various institutions and organizations to provide enriching experiences for the students, empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and build a better tomorrow.

Students filled Muhammadiyah University Tangerang’s General Soedirman Hall on June 15, 2023, for a UGen Seminar and Focus Group exploring Indonesia’s founding principles as the foundation for fostering peace in the country.

The event was made possible through the collaboration of the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Indonesia, Citra Institute, and the Faculty of Law at the University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang. The forum’s theme, “Implementation of Pancasila as Darul Ahdi wa al-Syahadah,” brought a diverse group together to foster a deeper understanding of Pancasila’s role in promoting world peace and harmony. Pancasila, the official, foundational principles of Indonesia, is derived from Sanskrit “pañca” (five) and “śīla” (principles or precepts).

The dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang and Ms. Tokuda Yorching Poon, a representative of GPF Indonesia, opened the UGen Seminar with encouragement to those present to network and collaborate following the experience. Their sentiments were followed up with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GPF Indonesia and the University of Muhammadiyah Tangerang, bolstering their commitment to furthering peacebuilding initiatives at the university.

The forum allowed students to delve into topics that balance faith, love of country, and the essential need to coexist and thrive with people of different religious beliefs.

The main event of the day featured two distinguished speakers who enriched the audience with their insights. Ingill Ra, the Regional Representative of GPF Asia Pacific, expounded on the practical implementation of Pancasila’s principles for supporting global peace. According to him, the Pancasila philosophy can even become a role model in other efforts to achieve peace, such as peace on the Korean Peninsula.

The second speaker was a professor who provided an in-depth explanation of Darul Ahdi wa al-Syahadah, which is a guide for Muslims to prevent violent extremism if there is an exchange of ideologies on a global or national scale. He provided valuable perspectives on incorporating these Islamic values and Pancasila into everyday life, which could therefore nurture harmonious relations. The seminar was followed by an engaging question and answer session where participants eagerly interacted with the speakers, fostering an atmosphere of collaborative learning and open dialogue.

After the speeches, the seminar provided extra time to delve deeper into the topic with focus groups for 30 selected students to exchange ideas and propose strategies to promote peace both locally and globally.
